Well, this Tori discussion has been interesting, especially the "enough already!" postings. Ironically, one of the last things I remember seeing before I unsubscribed to RDT (the Tori mailing list) in the summer was a complaint about too many Jewel postings. :-) Every so often, it seems, there is a growth spurt on this list and conversations, as they tend to do in cyber-life as they do in real life, start to get a little off-topic, and then someone inevitably complains. And when it reaches a certain point, it's probably justified. Let's keep in mind, too, that some people have to pay for their e-mail... overloading their mailboxes with stuff they are definitely not going to want to read is not really fair. So assuming that Jewel is the topic of conversation on this list, what non-Jewel stuff is appropriate to post? It really is a judgment call, and since this is an unmoderated list it is you who decides whether or not it it posted. The question you're really asking is, "what will be interesting to the others on this list (i.e. fellow Jewel fans)?" To a certain extent, brief discussion of related artists certainly is, especially if you are comparing them to Jewel. In fact this mailing list was born out of discussion on another mailing list, ecto. I'd also be willing to bet that a fair number of people on this list discovered Jewel through "off-topic" postings on RDT, fell in love, and ended up here. However, at a certain point, you have to step back and think, OK, is this a Jewel mailing list, or RDT #2? Long, rambling posts with no Jewel content probably *don't* belong on this list. Again, it's a judgment call. Take something that was recently posted, the welcome message from RDT. It's REALLY long, it's readily available by e-mail, and exactly how many people will be interested in it anyway? a) not everyone on this list is a fan of Tori Amos. b) many of the people who are *already belong* to RDT so don't want to see the welcome message again. c) many of the rest of us once belonged to RDT but got sick of it and unsubscribed a long time ago. What would have served the function equally well would have been to simply describe in a short paragraph what the RDT mailing list is all about, and tell how to join it. You can even invite anyone who is interested in seeing the welcome message to e-mail you about it (although they probably won't since if they are interested they will subscribe to the list and see it anyway!) Sorry for diatribe... it didn't start out that way. - ----------------------------- Anyone in the Toronto area hear anything yet about Jewel's show at the Horseshoe? It's less than 3 weeks away and they still haven't announced it yet, I'm starting to get anxious! - ------------------------------ I was really surprised and happy for Jewel when she appeared on Conan the first time. I was even more surprised and happy when she appeared on Leno. Now Letterman too? Unreal! Jewel is really starting to take off, and it's great to see, isn't it? Although, I must admit, a selfish part of me wishes she was still small and playing coffeeshops and the like. It was so intimate and personal then. I guess those days are at an end! Please don't let it happen here too.
