WHY I LIKE JEWEL ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: jeffw (Jeff Wasilko) Date: Mon, 1 Jan 1996 14:10:00 -0500 (EST) Subject: ADMINISTRIVIA: Digests now available!!! ----------------------------------- *** / New Majordomo with Digest Option / *** ----------------------------------- O.K. folks. Here's what you've all been waiting for. I have upgraded the mailing list software (Majordomo) to the latest and greatest version (1.92). The most important consequence is that all lists on smoe.org are now also available in digest mode. What is "Digest Mode"? - ---------------------- Some lists are experiencing a lot of volume (many messages per day). Some people would rather not receive all these postings one at a time since it can be difficult to get any work done if you are always being interrupted by incoming mail. In digest mode, Majordomo collects all the messages sent to the list during a given day and then sends you a single composite message at the end of the day which contains all the individual messages glued together. Currently digests are scheduled to go out at 1 AM (Eastern). If there is great interest in having the digests go out at another time, or perhaps twice a day, I'll consider changing it. Are there any Drawbacks to Digest Mode? - -------------------------------------- If a message announcing some event is posted to the list the same day as the event, you will not see the posting until after the event has occurred. Of course, if you are expecting an important announcement, you can always subscribe to the regular form of the list for that day. How Do I Sign Up for Digest Mode? - --------------------------------- For each list on smoe.org, there is a companion digest list called `listname-digest'. For example, the digest form of the siblings list is called siblings-digest. The digest form of the jewel list is called jewel-digest, etc. You decide whether or not you want to receive postings in digest mode on a per list basis. For example, if you are currently on the jewel list and want to switch to digest mode for that list, unsubscribe yourself from the jewel list and subscribe to the jewel-digest list. You would do this by sending the following three-line message to majordomo@smoe.org: unsubscribe jewel subscribe jewel-digest end That's all there is to it. In all other respects, digest lists work the same way as normal lists. For example, you can unsubscribe from a digest list and re-subscribe to the normal form of the list by reversing the list names in the example above; i.e., unsubscribe jewel-digest subscribe jewel end Replying to Digest Messages - --------------------------- Since messages digest contain several messages, usually from several different people, you will have to pay attention to the From: or Reply-To: fields on the headers of the individual messages if you want to reply to the author of that message. Simply replying to the incoming digest message will direct your message back to the list address where everyone on the list will see it. Please be sure NOT to quote or forward the entire digest when replying back to the regular address. Do I Post to listname@smoe.org or listname-digest@smoe.org? - ----------------------------------------------------------------- Even if you are signed up for the digest form a list, you still send your postings to the regular form of the list address. For example, if you are signed up for jewel-digest, you would still send your own messages to jewel@smoe.org. Can I be Subscribed to Both listname and listname-digest? - --------------------------------------------------------- Yep. Of course, in general this would defeat the purpose of digest mode. However, you might want to be on the digest form of a list for most of the time and periodically subscribe to the regular form of the list if you were expecting an important announcement that day. When Did it All Start? - ---------------------- Digest capability was turned on some time around midday today (Eastern Time) so the first digests (sent out tonight) will contain messages from that point forward. Have fun, and stay tuned for another announcement about the availability of the mailing list archives. Happy New Year! - -Jeff [credit for the format and much of the boilerplate text goes to Patrick Goebel of cycling.org] ------------------------------ From: reach@fishnet.net (James Reach) Date: Mon, 01 Jan 96 14:34:18 PST Subject: WHY I LIKE JEWEL No one responded to my "Why I Like Jewel" Posting, so I assume it didn't get through while the list was being maintained this weekend. WHY I LIKE JEWEL I like Jewel for the following reasons: 1. Voice-Her voice is unique but pleasant. She can make it soar with upper notes (as in the song "Morning Song" "Do not answer the DOOOORR"; she can yodel really fast, she can enunciate as in "Who Will Save Your Sole" and she can vary from low to high notes in the same song as in "Amen" and "Angel by Your Side." Her voice is incredibly versatile, but it is also instantly recognizable. It is not pap-encrusted, cheery like Tracy Chapman, but rather has its earthy grating quality to it that makes the listener know a someone real is playing. 2. Songwriting-She is a prolific. At a recent San Diego concert she wrote four songs on the morning of the performance, took her handwritten notes up to the stage and performed the songs beautifully. All her songs are perfect in describing an aspect of the human condition and weaving the lyrics to the music. Her yodeling song is cheery, her songs about disgruntled housewives are minor in key, her songs about heavenly things soar. Her songs about love and relationships are right on point. Her songs about media, news and politics are also very insightful. Amazingly, she is ONLY 21 years old. I can't believe she has experienced all of the emotions (breakups, love, death of friends, religious epipheny, loss of brother) that her songs speak of. She must also write of things that she hasn't experienced, but is able to convey through her songs the emotions of those experiences as well. 3. Performance-Jewel is so friendly and approachable at her concerts! She treats the audience as partners. "What do you want to hear?" She discloses a lot about her personal life. She always thanks the audience for appreciating her and her music. I have never seen her flub a performance or just go through the motions. She puts her heart and soul into her music and cares a lot about performing it just right. 4. The music scene--Jewel is never someone who will be co-opted by celebrity. She is just a person who happens to have talent at singing and songwriting. She will not put her fans below her. She lives for her fans and her music. She genuinely cares about people and it shows in her dealings. She always lives up to her promises and appearance commitments. 5. Decent human being--Besides her talent, Jewel as a person is a very kind and caring individual. She cares about her family to the point of calling her mother her best friend and making her manager. She cares enough about a lost half-brother that she wrote a song about him which ends, "P.S. I love you, your sister Jewel." When asked in interviews what she wants to achieve she says, modestly, "I want to be happy and eat every day." She cares about people and happiness more than money and fame. As far as I can tell, she has never snapped at anyone or made a cold business decision that hurt someone. I think Jewel realizes that everyone on the planet is in this together, and she wishes her contribution to the whole of humanity to be positive. The unusual thing about a famous person is that although I have hardly met Jewel, I feel like I know her. I don't want to intrude into her personal life, but that is the nature of celebrity. People talk about you, who hardly know you. I hope Jewel doesn't mind this discussion. Keep in mind that it is out of appreciation. - --James Reach ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #1 *************************
