Some of us have truly not been around for all of this at all. I know at least I have not been on here in a a while. I pop in from time to time, but it has definitely been awhile. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Dec 2005 17:44:33 -0500 From: freckledangel@aol.com Subject: [EDA] depressed by lack email JewelBlues@aol.com wrote: "Depressed by lack of anymore female singer/songwriters with a World Conscience to make a change..and have the GIFT of great music within them. There hasn't been a new artist who can play guitar /sing./write highly intelligent songs....in many years. I have no interest in POp Queens...for they have nothing to SAY t....except "Please buy my CD" it's another disoposable piece of pop (Lindsey, britney, Ashlee, etc)...oh well..such is the state of things. david.el" I think the problem is not a lack of such female songwriters, but the lack of opportunity for highly intelligent honest singer/songwriters to make it through the industry. Its rare and very welcome when genuinely talented and intelligent female singer/songwriters do make it, but when the industry is looking to sell zillions of records, intelligence is not what they are looking for per se. Too often it is vapid lyrics, a one dimensional image, and the ability to attract a large number of young people to buy a record, often something gimmicky. The quality is out there, you just have to look harder. Try searching among indie artists, maybe check out http://www.cdbaby.com One new artist that has impressed me recently and has some very intelligent and thoughtful lyrics and who is releasing a new album in the near future (cdbaby.com has her live albums, I believe, or you could order them through her website) is Antje Duvekot. She is opening for Ellis Paul on some dates and is very talented in my opinion. I love when people like Patty Griffin actually get known, although they really have to work hard to break through. But David, be mad at the industry and state of affairs if you want, but I think the talent is out there, you just have to look much harder for it.
