Well, it's been 10 years since the release of POY, right?? Congrats Jewel, for making one of the best albums ever!! Let's celebrate with a new album, please! Fabio ________________________________________________ WNET - www.wnetrj.com.br ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Feb 2005 23:50:08 -0500 From: MAC14460@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Jewel's Destiny I have no idea what her management is doing with these songs. We'll find out sooner or later. Maybe they should just do a live album of her most requested music? Is it really all that hard to figure out???? You know what they say in hip-hop? "Keep it real." Be real. Sing about your life and the world as you really see it. That's what people want to hear. That's what made POY so popular. Her life experiences and her thoughts and feelings about those experiences related to so many people. People said, "Yeah, I know exactly what she means. I feel that way too sometimes." She was singing what was in so many people's journals. Her incredibly simple yet poignant way of expressing her thoughts (all our thoughts), somehow touch the feelings and emotions that go along with our thoughts too. To make that kind of personal connection - that's real writing talent. Then she 'graduated' to the inevitable 'theme' albums and drifted right into the mainstream with other so-called 'professionally' managed pop artists. And the CD sales dwindled, didn't they? And she became more 'insulated' from her fans and the real world, didn't she? And it's all not working nearly as well as it used to. Maybe it's time to get real again. Maybe it's time for her to do what she does best, which is different from the typical pop star. For me, listening to many of her songs isn't just entertaining, it's got a huge emotional component as well. We can relate to her and what she sings about on a surprisingly personal level. Most big name artists simply don't have the writing talent to relate to their audiences through their writing the way that Jewel can. They rely heavily on polished production value. It's like some kind of formula. If there's too much production in a song, the words get lost in the sound. That's fine for many artists. Their 'sound' and image is pretty much all they've got. Most artists need lots of production help. Not our girl. Her voice, all by itself is so remarkable that it grabs your ear. She barely even needs a guitar. For me, I've often described Jewel's music as working in two ways. The sound of her magnificent voice opens my ears, and then her words just flow right into my brain, and make me think, and feel. It's always amazing to me. She's got many songs that work that way. I so hope this next CD gets back to that raw POY style. That's where she shines, and that's what will grab the next generation of Jewel fans. On the new CD I hope she does some thoughtful songs, and fun songs (the Cold Song always makes me smile), and a couple of simply beautiful songs. She doesn't have to get preachy or political. Just be herself. As for beautiful songs, I've always thought that an amazing final encore for one of her concerts, would be for her to sing Ave Maria, acappella, with no amplification. Just step back out on stage, set the microphone off to the side, and let her voice just soar. She has the pipes for it. For those of us who have the Joy CD, you know how this sounds. Phenomenal. The audience would be stunned. When she finished, there'd be 1 or 2 seconds of silent amazement. And then of course huge applause. People would be talking about that encore with their friends the next day. Like I was saying, let's hope the new CD gets back to showcasing her talents. Her writing, her voice, and her ability to connect with and entertain an audience. Because she has real talent(s), she doesn't need to be the same old formula pop star like most of the mediocrity that's currently out there. Does her management/record label not recognize this? Do they not understand how to develop her career? Have they only got the one formula that they know how to use? Get her out of that mold. It doesn't work for her. Let her be Jewel. Let her release what she wants, and sing her heart, and do what she learned all your life growing up. It's works for her. She's got the potential to be a classic for decades. An enduring icon. Could that be her destiny? Only time will tell. Let's see if her so-called management/label can 'manage' to help that happen. I will start it out and then you guys can add songs. Usually all Jewel records have 13-14 songs, so lets say this record will have 14 songs. In any order I will start it off. 1. Rosy & Mick 2. Lemondrops & Clover 3. Everything Breaks Sometime 4. Passing Time??? 5. Carnivore??? 6. Louisa and her Blue guitar??? 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. 14. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V10 #51 ***************************
