Today's Subjects: ----------------- Re: [EDA] the songs Amen vs. Hallelujah ["Allison Crowe Music Mgmt" Subject: Re: [EDA] the songs Amen vs. Hallelujah Two great songs!! I've never thought of the two together, though. My sense is that Jewel has likely sung the word Hallelujah many times in the context of her Latin and classical vocalizing. Amen contains one of my all-time favourite Jewel lyric lines ~ "some are being beaten, some are being born, and some can't tell the difference anymore". I'm going to play POY now! Thanks for the inspiration, Mark ( : Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah is just a brilliant song. And, one of his special gifts/talents is to create songs that are open to a wide range of interpretation. I was just reading a quote, minutes ago about this very thing: "And there is a very special secret embedded in his songs. Like the great Cole Porter and Irving Berlin classics, Cohen's songs can be endlessly reinterpreted without losing their special magic. There is always an element of Cohen in every interpretation but every singer can come to the Cohen canon and place their own, unique vocal stylings on his songs." Rufus Wainwright's version of Hallelujah, on the Shrek sountrack, is very cool. John Cale's rendition (heard in the movie itself, but not the soundtrack), is a favourite of a lot of people. I've yet to hear it. And, of course, Jeff Buckley has lots of fans for his version(s), too. Bono has done a very different take. Damien Rice, Ari Hest and others stick closer to the Rufus, Jeff Buckley style. As does Kathryn Williams. Perhaps I should have posted the "Hallelujah" Allison Crowe performed at the EDAF Project Warmth show, but, there was so much to that show, and these clips are already online: Hallelujah (Cohen) ~ http://www.allisoncrowe.com/music/hallelujah.mp3 Hallelujah video low - http://www.allisoncrowe.com/AllisonCroweHallelujahTidingsNewVI128.wmv Hallelujah video high - http://www.allisoncrowe.com/AllisonCroweHallelujahTidingsNewVI512.wmv kd lang's version is more of a smooth ballad, and, I believe Judy Collins has a version... and, in total, there's 44 different interpretations of Cohen's Hallelujah released to date. Some EDAs may have heard Jeff Buckley's version and not even realize it. It was prominent a couple of years ago in the ending sequence of one of the most popular West Wing episodes ever. It was played during the scenes where a very likable Secret Service agent (played by Mark Harmon) protecting the White House Press Secretary CJ Cregg, was gunned down in a New York City deli after walking into the store to buy something and a robbery was going on. This episode often plays on Bravo, at least once a month during the West Wing marathon on Mondays. I remember that vividly. It was during the era of Jewel's career where TV appearance were a very big deal because the ywere still quite rare and this list was in the "200+ posts a day" mode. We were all geared up for the interview because Charlie Rose is a great interviewer and we knew Ms Kilcher would get a lot of time in on the show and then someone went and announced that they cloned a sheep, called it Dolly and Jewel got bumped so they could cover that story. More than a few EDas were ticked off that night. Mike ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V10 #25 ***************************
