My name is Angie. I've been on this list before, but not for quite a while. I was just wondering if there are any Jewel fans on this list from Australia, as I'd like to talk to, well, anyone from around here who likes her as much as I do! I went to her concert in Melbourne in February this year. I had to fight tooth-and-nail to get there, but I DID get there, and Jewel was jaw-droppingly good. Just her and the guitar ~ perfect. Anyway, just wondering. Thank you! ~~Angie. PS Did you hear about the foot path?... It's all over town. ;) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Nov 2004 11:39:22 +0100 From: "Ummelen, Marcel - Voridian" Subject: RE: [EDA] EDAs Dying? >Matt wrote: >Subject: [EDA] EDAs Dying? >Is this association dying? >The activity seems really drab! What's going on? This list died when Jewel went on the commercial path. The magic of the artist communicating through and with the fans was lost instantly. Since a long time I think Jewel doesnt care anymore what is happening here. And I can imagine why she doesnt care. Just my 0.02 Marcel. Maybe it's just that she's really busy and she has a full life. I mean she's a huge celebrity and she has a boyfriend. I say "Good for her!" As well, as everyone else here on the list. It's just that we have other things going on in our lives. People get older, get married, have families, have lives. I'm sure when something else major happens with Jewel again, there will be more activity here on the list. When I first joined this list back in 1996, my inbox was flooded constantly. But Jewel was just really making it big in the mainstream. Just wait until her next album comes out. I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot more posting then, especially because it sounds like her next album is going to kick ass! Is anyone aware of a website or document that would list Jewel's song titles, year they were recorded, and on what disc they show up on? Having bought all the released stuff, I was trying to become a 'completist' and get as much as possible, after hearing about this "Jewelstock" stuff! Thanks, all! Tired of spam? Yahoo! She has established herself as an artist and certainly has an audience that will support her on her own. She doesn't need to be connected to a major label just to have them take money from her and "paying her royalties." She should be able to do it herself and take a larger proportion. If she did it herself, she could just have a distribution deal and she can get most of the revenues from record sales. In regards to the list being slow ... It's just as slow as I've seen it in the past. Of course, in general, the activity is certainly at a lower rate than in 1997-ish. Also, I think most people have found different avenues for their discussions. Mailing lists and chat rooms were really big in the past and that has slowed down too. It kind of came to me after I'd bought 0304 two summers ago (quite embarassedly, having to face the dude-brah checkout guy at Best Buy. "It's for my girlfriend, I swear.") Anyway, listening to 0304 got the gears in my head turning. Jewel had gone a very long way from just a girl with a guitar. I remember the general response to 0304; how she'd sold out, how she'd gone Britney, blahblahblah, and I've been meaning to write this for a long time since. By all means, a musician is allowed to do whatever they damn well please, whenever they want, and however they want. People love to complain when their favorite artist branches out, saying they lost their roots or whatever. No Doubt aren't writing Tragic Kindgom again anytime soon, Green Day aren't going to do Dookie over and over, RHCP aren't doing Blood Sex Sugar Magic over and over, and U2 aren't doing Joshua Tree over and over again. (And for the record, new Chili Peppers is way better than old Chili Peppers. And don't even get me started on U2.) Anyway, 0304 was completely necessary experimentation and adventuring. I don't think most people caught on that Jewel was taking a stab at pop music culture, but then again I don't think she made it very clear. The video for "Intuition" should have been a completely over the top satire on pop music videos, in my humble opinion. I mean it was a satire, but it should have really been rammed down the public's throats. It would have been a poignant statement. But anyway, it was in listening to this album that I came to the theory that Jewel's next album, or perhaps the one after that, will be her best ever. I realized that for many musicians, they have something special about them that helped them break through to the masses, something about them that hooked you. Some artists are hit-makers, or catchy song-writers. Some artists are innovators or experimenters. What made Jewel special back in 1997, when I was first hooked, was that she was the first singer to come along in a long time that you could CONNECT to. I remember when I'd first started hearing YWMFM on the radio. The song cut right THROUGH me. It attached itself inside of me and it never left. I convinced myself that she'd written the song just for me. WWSYS had a very similar effect. I remember watching VH1 Storytellers, and it was amazing. It was hard being a guy in high school who only listened to Jewel, let me tell you. Jewel was just a girl with a guitar. But when she performed you were bound and she wouldn't let you go. I bought POY, bewildered that YWMFM and FG were different versions, like many I'm sure. I got Spirit when it came out, and I got This Way when it came out too. They were alright albums, but for the hardcore Jewel fans, it was like we were all in on a secret. The best example the public probably got were the Grey Matter and Sometimes it be that Way tracks at the end of This Way. Anyway, then 0304 comes out, and we're like "dance beats?? What??" But that brings me to the end of this long-winded, very boring rant. I'm not badmouthing *anything* Jewel has done, if she's happy with what she's doing then it really doesn't matter we think. But at this point, maybe Jewel can put enough space between herself and all her work to look at all of it in hidsight. What do you think her next move will be? Maybe, just maybe, she'll get attached again to making the kind of music that hooked us all, just her and her guitar, but now with 10 years (since POY) of life-experience under her belt. Maybe, just maybe, she'll make some of the music, that for many of us, especially the older EDAs, is the reason we're here. I also understand that she still does alot of concerts acoustic, and even writes new songs while on tour, but I'm sure you understand where I'm trying to go with all of this. The Mayers and Mrazs of today may be pretty good at sitting down with just a gutiar, but no one has come along since Jewel who can do it like she can. We fell in love with a girl and a guitar. ~~Richard Angel in Devil's Shoes ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V9 #305 ***************************
