I happen to have a copy of Poem Song. It's in real media format and I downloaded it off the 'net. As far as I know it can still be downloaded from the place I got it. It's a older Jewel site that hasn't been updated since This Way came out, but it's got some older Angelfood on it. All of it's on the "downloads" page. Here's the link: http://www.geocities.com/jewelthisway/index.htm. Hope this sheds some light on the situation. I've always loved the Stones version and then last year I heard it by The Sundays and I even liked that version. I wish Jewel WOULD cover it. I think she'd do a superb job. And I didn't know she covered "Summertime". I LOVE that song. Grew up with Janis Joplin's version and I love that one, and I love every version I've heard of that song, even Fantasia's version. I bet Jewel sang it great. She's got the pipes for it, that's for sure. Didn't know she covered Nina Simone either (another fav of mine). Sounds like I have a lot of the same tastes in music as Jewel, guess that's why I love her so much. Has she ever covered "At Last" by Etta James? If not, she would do great job of that too, I'm sure. It's one of their better songs.>> > Hi all, Several people forwarded me this post/question over the weekend. The answer is Jewel has not performed or covered the Stones song "Wild Horses," although many others have. There may be some confusion deriving from the fact that back in her Inner Change Coffehouse era she often performed a song, which was essentially a spoken word composition, called "Wild Horse" (aka The Poem Song). There are a lot of great versions of "Wild Horses" out there though. My two favorites, besides The Stones version, are by The Sundays (with beautiful vocals by Harriet Wheeler) and the true original version by The Flying Buritto Brothers, which was released months before The Stones version. Jagger & Richards actually wrote the song for Gram Parsons, founder of The Flying Buritto Brothers, but it was such a great tune, they included it on their classic Sticky Fingers album, as well, which was in production at the time (1970). In vaguely related minutia, Jewel is fond of that particular Stones album, "Sticky Fingers." She wasn't turned onto it until late 1998, though! Shortly after absorbing that album, she began seriously playing electric guitar in her band. During 1999, I thought she had a distinct similarity to Keith Richards in her sensibilities as a rhythm guitarist and I also thought that album influenced some of her songwriting. A perfect example of this is "Everybody Needs Someone Sometime," which I sense was directly influenced by her listening to Keith Richards circa "Sticky Fingers," and was written shortly after getting into that album. OK. Enough babbling about that. Onto your second question: <> Life is like a beanstalk. Isn't it? ;-) Alan NP: Tracey Thorn: "A Different Shore" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Sep 2004 08:43:13 -0700 (PDT) From: Jason Quattrini Subject: [EDA] Winamp skins I just looked at a site someone posted about Wild Horses... the site has some pretty nice Winamp skins, but they all seem to be corrupt. In the version I have, the artist does some of the same voice techniques that Jewel does in her other songs. It's live, she starts out by saying "I'm going to sing another song, quickly here, before I talk more.....", and anyone who has seen Jewel live knows that's something she would say (and she says it just like Jewel). I honestly can't imagine that it isn't Jewel, if it's not, than this artist could pose as a voice double, it's so Jewely. But it's not the same as any that I checked on those other artist's websites. MrBB has replied to the list already & stated that Jewel has never covered 'Wild Horses', and all considered, I think he'd know :) plus, I downloaded the version you are talking about that is labelled Jewel (and I downloaded like, 7 copies, all the same version labelled as Jewel), and it's not Jewel, where the girl says "I'm just going to sing other song quickly here before I talk more... blah blah one of the first songs I ever fell in love with"... something like that, right? that's not Jewel... her voice has a similar quality, but you can tell that's not Jewel's voice, not only while she's talking, but *definately* while she is singing. ~ Sandy - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Josie Rathbone" To: Sent: Monday, September 06, 2004 1:51 PM Subject: [EDA] Re: STILL Wild Horses > I have checked all the versions that were suggested on the last list that might be the one that Amy and I are claiming to be Jewel- none of those versions (Chantal Kreviazuk, Charlotte Martin, Mazzy Star, The Sundays, or the Rolling Stones) are the version I have. So OhFive is almost here, and its tour season again. So i was thinking about maybe booking Jewel for a show... I already booked Steve Poltz, so i guess my next step to top that would be Jewel. I almosted booked her a few years ago, but since she was playing two shows at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga and i was less than 50 miles away, So the Booking people were not sure if we could do that, and the Date i was going to get fell throw anyways. The Details i got back then from them was $50,000 to book Jewel or 85% of the Gross or Net (whatever) So 50K's or 85% which ever was more. is what we need to come up with to book her. So if we get 500 People at 100 bucks each, we can book a show with EDA's and Jewel. Well more like 600 people @ $100 bucks or 500 @ like 130 to pay for the Cost of the Venue and all that. I live in Santa Cruz, i am 25-30 mins from San Jose, 30mins from Monterey, about an hour from San Francisco... Santa Cruz is an Awesome Place!! if you have never been here, do some research on our lil town.. But if we could get the People i could get the Place, we could have Jewel and no opener or some EDA or Local Artist i work with open up, and just have like a Jewel Fest, try to do something like Humpherys (i was suppose to go but missed out :( also was there for NASHBASH but Jewel was sick when i was there and i didnt make the trip the following week back there.) So talk to me people in California or People that want to come to California for a Jewel Stock kind of thing that we could try to put together.
