I'm writing now with an idea, the seed of which was planted some years ago when I experienced the pleasure of joining together with other EDAs at a variety of cool happenings, and was inspired by Jewel's music and her philosophy that "We are all tiny lights for each other". I decided to get more involved with music, my greatest love in life. For years now, I've been helping a singer-songwriter, Allison Crowe, to pursue her dream of a music career, and it's a fascinating, challenging, path. . Some EDAs know Allison's music ~ when Jewel's official site had a guest artist section, Alley was honored to be included alongside Steve Poltz, Cindy Lee Berryhill, The Cowboy Junkies and others in this favorite artist gallery. Mr BB introduced Alley to those on this list at the time, by saying: "Our newest musician to be featured is emerging singer-songwriter Allison Crowe, a Canadian from Nanaimo, British Columbia. Although Allison is young and yet to release her first full-length album, she caught my attention, because not only was her voice captivating, I found her songwriting to have remarkable depth. Her voice, poetic and haunting, is a modern original at the same time as it recalls rock's greats of the '60s and '70s. Much like the way many people felt upon hearing Jewel during her InnerChange days, when listening to Allison's music, one recognizes the obvious great potential there and feels lucky to be experiencing her at this point in time. She's been called "a mega-talent in the making" and her music is a testament to the power of the human voice and spirit." Since that time, Allison has been courted by record labels, and rejected them when they wanted to make her into someone she is not. So, we've carried on independently. Earlier this month, the influential London, England-based music industry website/newsletter, Record of the Day, selected Allison's version of the Leonard Cohen song "Hallelujah" as its record of the day and week, telling its audience: "Bet you thought you heard all the versions you need to hear of this song, right? Think again, because Allison Crowe has a voice to fall in love with. She is from Vancouver Island in Canada, descended from Irish and Manx stock. She's exactly the sort of artist who can make serious headway on her own label and that's just what she's doing." You can hear this track at the RotD site: http://www.recordoftheday.com/archive/soundClips/2004-08-03.m3u and at Allison's own site @ http://www.allisoncrowe.com/music/hallelujah.mp3 You can also hear Allison's impromptu live version of "Who Will Save Your Soul" http://www.painunspoken.allisoncrowe.com/wwsys.html This was recorded a few years back at a living room show, and there's lots more, current, mp3s @ http://www.allisoncrowe.com/music.html This is the background to possibly manifesting the idea we have - that is, for Allison to put on a free concert in New York City, this coming October 16 (a Saturday night). We're going to be touring throughout eastern Canada this Fall, and, we can cross the border to do a show if there's people who'd like to attend. We've got a beautiful, intimate, venue in mind, and wonder if people would like to be part of this... It may be mid-term season for students, and there's life issues all of us has to consider, but, essentially, I'd love to hear from any EDAs who could, and would like to, make it to Manhattan on October 16, 2004 for a night of music ( : Thanks for listening. cheers, Adrian ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Aug 2004 19:12:36 -0700 From: "Allison Crowe Music Mgmt" Subject: [EDA] Re: EDA/SJC: musing... free Allison Crowe concert in NYC oops - the direct link to Alley's version of WWSYS is @ http://www.painunspoken.allisoncrowe.com/covers/whowillsaveyoursoul96.mp3 (the link in my earlier email is to a page of covers, which may be of interest, too, but this is the direct song link!); ok, anyone up for this EDA-inspired gathering, please let me know ( : ~ peace, Adrian ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V9 #229 ***************************
