Anyways, like I said, sorta dumb and unimportant, I was just curious. New and Improved Yahoo! From the shows I've heard (I have a couple instantlive cds, I can't goto the actual concert due to my location) its been an awesome and refreshing tour. The NWW Tour had almost identical setlists for every show. This recent tour has been similar, but she has mixed it up now and then and threw in a bunch of new songs, and even resurected some old fan favorites include Gods Gift To Women, Nicotine Love, etc., and she has come up with new stories to tell. I love her singing on this tour as well. What I love about Jewel is that she never sings a song the same way twice, ever. Thats the reason why I enjoy hearing so many different shows. If she sang a song exactly the same or toned it down a lot more, it would be less exciting for me, and getting new shows would seem repetitive. I like it when she showcases her abilities. Just my two cents~! Personally, I didn't notice a huge change in her singing, really. Maybe a couple points here and there, but nothing drastic. Maybe it has just been different at a couple of shows. She can do so much more, and she has in the past. I hope this is not a new trend for her. Her last tour was fantastic, with so much energy it was incredible, and fun to attended. This tour was kind of boring." - ---- _________________________________________________________________ Take charge with a pop-up guard built on patented Microsoft. He's been on her show a couple times now. Also his manager is Joe Simpson--Ashlee and Ryan's dad. In a word...amazing. Of the many times I've seen her over the past nine years, this was about as good as any of her performances. Some preliminaries. First, although I'd seen pictures of Jewel with her newish bangs, a relatively small change in appearance, I couldn't believe how different it made her look in person. Odd. As was previously stated, she was dressed in a relaxed blue jeans and black camisole outfit. More importantly, here's the set list: 1 .Near You Always 2. Long Slow Slide 3. Boy Needs a Bike 4. Stephenville 5. Sometimes It Be That Way 6. Down So Long 7. Life Uncommon 8. Hands 9. Stand 10. Violet Eyes 11. Break Me 12. Intuition 13. Foolish Games 14. YWMFM 15. 1,000 Miles Away 16. WWSYS Encore 17. Choose Me (on dulcimer) 18. Chime Bells (abbreviated version) Pretty good set, donchya think? I was in the third row, which didn't exactly impair my enjoyment of the show. Jewel was in great form; funny, chatty, engaging, and - I guess this is where the opinons part - tremendously confident and playful in her singing. The other day, Rob posted the following, starting with an excerpt from a newspaper review: - --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >"Sunday's performance was a mixed bag. The first half was pleasant enough, but marred somewhat by Jewel's sometimes cloying penchant for oversinging. With a voice as beautiful, powerful and elastic as hers, it's puzzling that she feels the need to show off, sometimes to the detriment of the song." >This is exactly how I felt about our show. And while I appreciate that many might actually prefer this style, it seems to be a growing trend in Jewel's shows. I was just wondering for all the shows we EDAs have attended this summer, did anyone else get a similar feeling - or was it just two bad shows in, mine in NJ and this one in Clio. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ With no offense intended towards Rob, or any other EDA, I couldn't disagree more strongly, from my point of view. I wasn't at Clio, but Saturday night I was deeply moved by the total artistry of her singing. Jewel has always been able to dazzle us with her voice, but she's moving well beyond that to the point where more than anything, hearing her sing Saturday night reminded me of watching Miles Davis play. Complete mastery of her voice as Miles displayed with his horn. Leaving lots of space between notes one moment, and then soaring, swooping, and moving from a whisper to a growl in a heartbeat...I found it just thrilling. I thought the way Jewel sang truly complemented the songs, and I did not find it showing off at all. In fact, we all know how Jewel could just belt it out and induce applause at will, if she so desired. Showing off, as many of the contemporary divas do ( I won't name names...), with endless meandering in an effort to emulate Patti Labelle always turns me off. It IS distracting from the song, but for me Jewel was able to convey even more emotional wallop in the songs with her often fresh treatment..to the point where she occasionally didn't even bother to get all of the words out...as if the phonetics were enough of a suggestion to get the meaning across.... like a sketch, or an impressionist painting. Of course, it's also a handy technique when you forget the lyrics....not that Jewel ever would.... ;-) I think it all comes down to the jazz influence. Jewel's simply getting more jazzy, more Ella Fitzgerald influenced, in her singing, even when she's not singing "jazzy" songs. Anyway, that's my take. I loved it. Well worth the 1,100 km of driving. (Why won't that woman ever play Montreal?!) The only downer, as was the case two years ago when she played Massey Hall, was the incomprehensible 11:00 pm curfew, which once again cut short the encores. It certainly felt as thought Jewel was prepared to play more, but after Choose Me, she announced that if she didn't stop in two minutes, the hall was going to charge her: hence, the 1 minute version of Chime Bells. Oh well: sometimes it be that way.. BTW, I took a friend to the show, who had seen Jewel before, and "liked" her, but was no fanatic by any means. She left the concert a complete convert, and that's no small accomplishment, as she is very knowledgeable, has high standards, and is not easily impressed...particularly by "mainstream" artists such as Jewel. I thik that says a lot about the quality of Jewel's performance, and her astonishing ability to communicate with a wide variety of audiences. I did pick up the Instant Live set after the show, for a snappy 40 bucks Cdn, well above the exchange rate on the advertised $25 US. An excessive price, to be sure, but when you're a captive audience, as I am, there just wasn't much choice..and it's a pretty terrific sounding souvenir of yet another treasured Jewel evening for me. I could say a lot more, but I'm feeling merciful, so I reckon that's it for now.
