Only a select number of concerts have been chosen for taping. Clear Channel is the biggest competitor with Disc Live for the production of CDs that are available within minutes after a concert has concluded. Clear Channel is also one of the conglomerates in the US who owns a majority of the nationbs radio and television stations. Clear Channel has been under fire for charges of monopolizing concert markets by not sharing revenues and not paying the artists. According to Steve Simon, the director of Instant Live b the artist and record company will make more money than Clear Channel on each CD. Simon claims that approximately 20 percent of concert goers purchase a CD of the show they just attended. Clear Channel b who is trying to patent the Instant Live concept b plans to expand the project to downloadable MP3s and market to retail chain sales. We pulled up to the Hilton, where we were staying and got out behind a stretch limo. Not thinking much of it, we checked in and went sightseeing. When we returned to the lobby that afternoon, we decided to take the elevator because we were tired from all the walking we had done. Waitingfor the elevator, in front of us were two elderly ladies and a younger woman with her dog, who was accompanied by a man. All of us entered the elevator and started our ride up. The elderly ladies were making a fuss over the young woman's dog and made a comment to the each other, "Oh, look she is protecting her dog and doesn't want to get germs on him." I turned to see what they were talking about and the young woman, who was wearing a mesh farmers hat and sun glasses, had her back turned to the elderly women and was turned more towards my husband and myself. It appeared she was trying to hide in the corner as much as possible and the man was guarding her. I took a closer look at the woman and told her that her dog was very cute. The woman thanked me and flashed me her beautiful crooked smile that any Jewel fan would recognize. Then, just as I recognized who she was, the elevator door opened on our floor. As we were exiting the elevator I nudged my husband and exclaimed, "That's was JEWEL!!!" My husband, not understanding me correctly, thought I had said "She is stealing her jewels" and turned quickly to see if he could help, but the elevator had already closed. I stopped my husband and corrected him by telling him, "No, you fool, that was Jewel, the singer." We knew she was in town for a summer fest, but never thought we would actually bump into her. That night her bus was parked in the parking lot and we tried to hang out to get her autograph, but no such luck. I later wrote to her website and they kindly sent us an autographed photo for our memory book of our trip!
