["kevin maguire" Subject: [EDA] Jewels Opener Susan Greenbaum... I just got an email from Mike Susan's Manager about the details of being on the road with Jewel and Ryan, and their experience being on tour.... enjoy! (and check out www.gotlocalmusic.com ) Here is my summary of 10 days on the road with Susan Greenbaum and Jewel. We're back from the tour and it was AMAZING! We covered 10 cities and 3000 miles in 10 days. It was exhausting but exhilarating all at the same time. I've been home for 2 days and I'm just starting to feel normal after 2 nights each of 11 hours of sleep. Susan only got 15 minutes (which translated to 3 songs) on stage 8 of the 10 nights. Two nights she got 20 minutes so she added another song. The crowd reaction was absolutely fantastic! Even with her short set, she was able to win the crowd over. All the people we met from each of the venues were great also. Hopefully we made some connections that will lead to other opportunities. The songs she performed were: "Wake Up!", "This Life" and "Everything But You". On the nights she had 20 minutes she added "I Got Me Some Friends" as the second song. The crowds were extremely receptive. Almost every night they started cheering about 3/4 of the way through the first song, when Susan really showcased her voice. They stopped what they were doing and started to pay close attention. It was amazing. Most of the venues told us that opening acts hardly every get the kind of attention that Susan got. After Susan played, there was a rush on the merchandise table for her CDs and T-Shirts. We never expected to sell as many CDs as we did. As a matter of fact we had to have a few cases shipped to meet us in NJ to carry us for the last 3 shows. We would have run out if we didn't get that shipment (Thanks Dale!). And Susan stayed and talked to everyone until the last person left the venue. Those of you who have seen Susan perform know that she loves to meet everyone at her shows. These shows were no different. Except that the crowds were much bigger. By far, the most intense reaction was to the new song "This Life". It was truly amazing that this song that Susan wrote less than 2 months ago was touching so many people. Every night people would come up to her, even as late a! s 2 hour s later (after Jewel's set) and start quoting lyrics back to her. Everyone wanted to know how to get their hands on this new song. We signed up a bunch of people on the mailing list and promised to let them know when the song was available. In my humble opinion, this might be the best song she's ever written. If you haven't heard it yet, come out to one of her shows. The other opening act, Ryan Cabrera was as nice as he could be. He was as nice as he is talented. He's on Atlantic records and has is debut album coming out this summer. If you get a chance, check him out at ryancabrera.com. He's also going to be touring with Jessica Simpson this summer. We had a great time hanging out with him and his buddies. His guitar tech also served as Jewel's guitar tech. These guys from Texas (and now L.A.) couldn't be nicer. One of my favorite moments was about the 3rd or 4th night after Susan did her first song, "Wake Up!". I was standing to the side of the stage videotaping her performance. The crowd reaction was electric as it was the previous nights. This caused Susan to jump up and down with excitement. Josh (Ryan and Jewel's guitar tech), turned to me and said "This is the favorite part of my day". Susan's performances were so good and the crowd reaction so positive, you couldn't help but feel good. It was a truly amazing experience. It was like a dream come true for me also. On the first night we received our tour laminates which were our 'all access' passes. I can't tell you how cool it was to be considered part of the tour. We had full access to all the backstage areas and could go anywhere we wanted. The security people at all the venues were so nice and treated us great. They were very appreciative of how friendly we were. Apparently alot of tour people are less than friendly to the people who work at the venues. Susan, we were told, was a shining exception. We were told by all the venue people that we were welcome back anytime. We visited some beautiful theaters. The Warner Theater in Torrington CT. The Merrill Auditorium in Portland, ME. The Kirby Center in Wilkes-Barre, PA just to name a few. As for Jewel and her inner circle, we didn't have too much interaction with them. We did become great friends with Jewel's merch guy. He taught us the ropes about how to deal with the venues re: merchandise sales. We owe him a huge debt. Jewel'! s other folks kept their distance for most of the tour. We stayed out of their way too. It was strange when people were coming up to our merch table to buy a CD or say hi to Susan, they would ask us about Jewel. It was weird to have to say that we hadn't met her yet. It seemed weird to me at least. But alas, we did finally meet her on the very last night. She was as nice as she could be. She chatted for a few minutes and took some pictures with us. Susan expressed her gratitude for the opportunity (as she did every night from the stage). Jewel was very shy and demure. And, oh yes, she was stunningly beautiful. It was nice to finally meet her. In the last few days of the tour, her inner circle did warm up to us a bit. On one of the last few days, her bus driver, who was very nice to us and called us "the nicest people in rock and roll" let us take a brief look inside the tour bus. It was something to see. Jewel's area in the back looked quite comfortable (for a bus) but the crew's bunks looked claustrophobic to me. But at least they could sleep or watch movies, etc. I even got to ride in the bus from one part of a parking lot to another. Of course Jewel wasn't on board at the time. We learned alot about what it takes to tour. Even a tour as small as just a chick with a guitar. Susan, Chris, Guy and I were constantly on the run and kept very busy. Each day was an adventure that I won't soon forget. Like I said, for me, the tour was a dream come true. For Susan it was an unbelievable opportunity to perform for so many people. And she did so well and made so many new fans that it was even better than we had imagined it would be. Sorry this was so long... (it's actually short for the amount of stories I have!), but wanted to share my experience with you. See you down the road....
