Dont forget she opened with somewhere over the rainbow!!! I too am looking for pics or recordings of it!! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 May 2004 09:49:24 -0700 (PDT) From: Patri Chicken Subject: [EDA] Re: New York concert Awesome at Carnegie Hall! I did not take any pictures but many many people in the audience did - too many for the ushers to stop them. I was sitting on the right side, Row M. Not bad, since I only got the tickets on Tuesday. Unfortunately, my husband got stuck at work so I was there alone (for $150). But that didn't stop me from loud cheering and screaming requests (I kept saying "Rocker Girl", all to no avail)! As usual, they screwed up her bio information in the program. They even said that 0304 came out in March 2004. Understandable for someone to think that ("03/04") but not understandable to print that without confirming. I didn't keep track of the set list, but I do remember what Jill forgot: Jewel's opening song! She said she always wanted to sing Somewhere Over the Rainbow in Carnegie Hall. But she didn't think of it until she was backstage. So she gave it a go, but warned us that she might not remember all the words. It was a capella, absolutely beautiful, radiant. When she was done someone shouted "I thought you couldn't remember the words!" Her response was "well there are two or three more verses I didn't sing." After everyone laughed and applauded, she added "Smartass." It was a nice introduction to her mood for the night. Anyway, I thought I'd share a few things. 1. Names of Performers/Celebrities Jewel mentioned in conversation (and when): Judy Garland (Somewhere Over the Rainbow) Whitney Houston (Deep Water - when changing keys) Ella Fitzgerald (scatting) Carol Burnett (Q&A with Jewel) 2. Stories she told: WWSYS - Writing in on the train (so many verses), hearing it when first released (Kermit); She said sounding like Kermit was just "so embarrassing." Then she added "Yeah, embarrassing all the way to the bank!" We all cheered at that one. Race Car Driver - The inspirational story that led to the song Hands - Being played after 9/11; she then dedicated the song to New York Recent fan story - At a meet-and-greet, a man said he would love to get her into his "chair". So she was all freaked out, picturing handcuffs and leather straps. And then he added "I'm a dentist." Pretty funny. Drugs - She said she's shy when she's off stage and maybe she has Social Anxiety Disorder. She went into the drug commercials (Paxil, etc) and how misleading they are, then how you have to take another drug for the side effects, another drug for those side effects, etc. It all goes around in a circle for the pharmaceutical companies to get everybody. That was kind of Ellen Degeneres-esque. "Q&A With Jewel" - She asked if we had any questions, but we just kept shouting requests. Chime Bells was the biggest request, so of course she sang it. But first someone asked if she's engaged. She answered "No, the bastard hasn't asked me yet." Someone in the audience shouted "YES!" and she laughed at that response. What else? So many people left the concert in the middle! I guess too many were expecting just 0304 stuff. There was a woman behind me with two kids (in the 10-year-old range) and the kids kept shouting "Intuition!" They were gone by the fifth song. More people continued to leave, even in the first few rows. Oh, and the new song. Jill called it "Christmas Song" but Jewel said it doesn't have a name yet. She should name it "Gold". It's about gold presents wrapped under the Christmas tree...but the one gift she wants (him) isn't wrapped in gold...she hopes he sees that she has a heart of gold...yeah. I hung outside afterward, saw her limo pull up. Finally she came outside but all her "people" were around her (on stage she mentioned that Atlantic was there) and it was clear she wanted to be left alone. So, I didn't bother her - I don't want to end up a story for her next concert (some weird blonde from New York with an old Jewel tank top from the Spirit tour). So sorry for the extremely long post - I'm amazed at how much I remember! ~Patricia :-) "A priest, a rabbi, a lawyer, a redneck, a blonde, a dog, and a horse walk into a bar.
