Music DVDs hitting a higher note By Mike Snider, USA TODAY Britney is in the zone, and so are Carly Simon, Jewel and Jimi Hendrix. The music DVD zone, that is. Suddenly, music DVDs are among the hottest instruments in an artist's repertoire. Sales of music videos and concerts on DVD doubled last year, with 18.7 million sold, vs. 9.1 million in 2002, according to Video Store Magazine Market Research. And new releases are ahead of last year's pace with about 200 out so far, compared with 150 at this time in 2003. "To be able to watch an artist you've loved all your life and be really immersed in the surround sound is a source of pleasure for me," says Ken Levy, a longtime Arista executive. His new Grandstand Entertainment label last month released Simon's Live From Martha's Vineyard - The Classic Concert, her memorable 1987 performance originally shown on HBO. "It sounds sacrilegious, but I would rather watch a live concert on DVD than actually go to a show." Tuesday, Britney Spears' In the Zone is out, with a bonus CD that has two new songs and two remixes. Even dead artists have gotten into the act. The first music DVD from the late Peggy Lee arrives today, and Hendrix, with a dozen titles out, is as prolific on DVD as on CD. The late Sam Cooke's Legend DVD won a Grammy this year. Music DVD may be a bright spot for the sluggish music industry, but it remains a small piece of the $11.6 billion DVD retail pie, about 2% of overall sales despite accounting for 11% of all releases. Labels release discs without rhyme or reason, says DVD Release Report editor Ralph Tribbey. "Any success they are having is purely by accident." But Levy expects the format to evolve. "Look how long it took DVDs to become entrenched in households," he says. "Naturally, music is catching up with it right now." Artists are helping in that evolution by getting more involved in music DVD projects, for varying reasons. Some see it as a new creative medium, others as a way to remain visible between CDs. Rock band R.E.M. released two discs recently, the concert video Perfect Square, in March, and last year's In Time, a compilation of music videos. "We've all been fans of a band who just seem like they don't care anymore and we never want to be like that," says lyricist and singer Michael Stipe, who helped design DVD packaging and menus. "If the decision is ours, we can't blame anyone else. "The avenues through which you can see something like a music video have been narrowed down immensely," says Stipe. "This is a great way to appease the fans and have them be able to own or be able to look at something." That direct connection of DVD also appeals to singer-songwriter Jewel, whose Live at Humphrey's by the Bay DVD was released two weeks ago. It has a concert, interview and music video. "I think a lot of my personality and humor comes across more live," she says. "You have a chance to be a little more whimsical. It's just a more multi-dimensional format than a record." The vinyl-loving Simon enjoyed the multimedia facets of the DVD. "There was a real thrill to it, the way it would be to see your song in a time capsule that had gone to the moon," she says. But she can't always get the DVD player to perform. "Almost every experience I've had (with her DVD player) has involved some cursing," Simon says. "I was just getting pretty good at VCRs." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Apr 2004 08:52:01 -0700 From: "Melissa Bruce" Subject: [EDA] NJC:the MiracleBob Victoria's new secret Here's an article about Dylan and the commercial: http://channels.aimtoday.com/celebrity/story.jsp?idq=/ff/story/0001%2F2004040 5%2F2054412023.htm&sc=1401&photoid=20040405NYR106 ~~-~~-~~-~~-~~-~~-~~-~~-~~-~~-~~-~~ Melee ( \ _ ( \ c ( / ( \ / / | / | /__ | " ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 06 Apr 2004 22:08:03 +0000 From: "now and zen girl" Subject: [EDA] flint show!! hello to all edas. i am out of lurking for a moment. i am wondering if anyone has any information that could help me get a copy of the flint center show from november 20 03... if anyone has it i have plenty to trade. I never was crazy about the idea of Renee Zellweger as Janis, but this one kind of shocked me. Now, I can't really knock Pink talentwise, though. I may not really care for her style of music but the girl can sing. She has some powerful lungs. Janis did too. However, my main concern is her acting ability. Considering, she has no real acting experience (besides her brief stint in Charlie's Angels 2), it just kind of worries me. I know Melissa Etheridge always said she would love to play Janis, but she's not an actor either, though. I also worry a little about Pink not looking a thing like Janis, but then I have to remember Charlize Theron's transformation in Monster. If makeup artists can make Theron ugly, then I have faith that they can do anything, so who knows? It could go either way. I have no doubt that Pink can sing the parts in the movie, let's just hope she can act the parts too. I've been waiting for this movie for a long time. I just hope the director doesn't screw it up. My 2 cents. Jessica Fabio wrote: Well, do you guys remember we once had a discussion about Jewel to possibly play Janis Joplin in a film? Well, I guess they finally decided to go with Pink. I can't say i'm happy about it, because I despise Pink, I think she's extremely irritating and overreated. But I also don't think Jewel was right for the part, although that would be cool, lol! >> DMX, Gwen Stefani and Ja Rule aren't the only musicians to announce they are making movies lately. P!nk has signed on to play Janis Joplin in a new biopic that will film this summer, tentatively called The Gospel According to Janis. Director Penelope Spheeris has been developing the movie for 15 years, and reportedly, P!nk (a.k.a. Alecia Moore) can do a dead-on vocal impersonation of Joplin. In fact, she will sing live in the movie. "After trying to make a picture on Janis' life for 15 years, I'd call Alecia's screen test the most gratifying moment in my film career," Spheeris told Daily Variety. "She is the perfect age to play Janis from when she first came to California at 19 to when she died at 27." Yahoo!
