Sorry. Michiel's comments were uncalled for and ignorant. I'm not a big fan of Beyonce, but it certainly isn't because she's black. And had I given my opinion about her music and the grammy's, the word 'black' wouldn't have been in it. I made sure I was actually off work to watch them this year, but I dozed off and awoke as Outkast won Album of the Year. I'm mad cuase I heard I missed INCREDIBLE performaces from Christina, Sarah McLachlan, BEYONCE (yes, Beyone is AMAZING, michiel), and Martina McBride. Did anyone happen to tape the show (i know you didn't michiel), that could make me a copy and send it to me if I sent them a few bucks for the tape and postage? Lemme know! The 2 CDs are the Australian version of 0304 as released last year (US version + remix of Intuition - ugh) plus a CD with 5 live performances and the videos for Intuition and Stand. The live performances are: 1. Inuition from Sessions @ AOL; 2. Standing Still from Sessions @ AOL; 3. Leave the Lights On from Sessions @ AOL; 4. Stand from Yahoo/Launch; 5. 2 Become 1 from Yahoo/Launch. All pretty good, though the band is a bit much in 2 Become 1. Leave the Lights On is very good, but then it's my favourite song on 0304. Stand is still hanging on in the top 50 here -- no. 49 -- after 15 weeks; it got to 21, which is better than any other single since Foolish Games -- apart from Intuition, which got to No. 4 (higher than any single other than YWMFM). I'm curious about why Stand did relatively so much better here than in the USA. I'd like to think the lyrics and the politics of Stand appeal more to Australians. And 2 Become 1 is unheard of here as a single. I assume it has died in the USA as no-one mentions it anymore. Just a few more days and a 600 km (375 miles) drive and I'll be spending the night of Valentines Day with Jewel. It's almost 5 years since the only other time I saw her. It's going to be great. Take care, Barry Howarth ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Feb 2004 05:20:31 EST From: JewelBlues@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Re: NO RACISM PLEASE re Below: PLEASE-NO RACISM posts . You may not like Beyonce but lets not start calling her names. Jewels 0304 DOESNT deserve ANY grammys. It didnt go Platinum. It Barely (?) went Gold. Does Beyonce deserve "5". NO, of course not., Did Norah JONES deserve 5 grammies, HELL NO, but, the voting Academy seems to follow trends. Although they DID have the good sense to pick Evanessnce over 50CXent for best new artist which didnt sit well with 50C...sore loser. haha JEWELBLUES@aol.com how can that black stupid singer beyonce win 5 grammys??? I think she must have really laid all the producers down... i am dissapointed that once again jewel lost the battle , to get recognition for her work?? are her songs silly??? is her musical image boring??? i can4t believe what the leading award commitees doing for fucking job.. they only nominate the artists where they get paid from royalties by the crooks of management.. for me it is idiot than one singer wins 5 while you can share them better... What gives the right that one artist win 5 ??? Is beyonce amazing?? no, is she a big cow ? yeah.. does she suck ? Yeah she does.. So in the end the whole grammy awards show is a big cliche and jewel will never win this event unless..... Before replying to this whole furor, I decided to sleep on it. Same reason he throws in the "Alaskan" adjective when describing Jewel ("the Alaskan folksinger Jewel")... It's just an adjective - not a well placed adjective, but I'm sure it's intended simply as an adjective. I think we're all missing a big point here: English is not Michiel's first language, so things may come out awkward at times. And anyway, did Michiel utter the famed "n-word"? No. It's harsh, but how else is he going to describe her without resorting to race, when his grasp on English, while valiant, isn't perfect? To go off on a tangent: My mother is a nurse, and has been for 20 years. When I was a child, she worked the graveyard shift. One of her patients didn't speak any English, and my mom, bless her, doesn't speak anything but English. The lady needed to use the bathroom, and my mother, who is the sweetest person in the world, looked at her and said "Man(y)ana." Now, for those who don't speak any Spanish, man(y)ana means tomorrow. My mother had intended to say "I'll be with you in a moment, ma'am." Now, I know my mother means well - I've had twenty seven years of life on this planet to learn that. There's no way she intended to tell her patient that she couldn't pee until tomorrow. Am I excusing racism? ***Hell no*** - don't think that for a second. Being disabled has taught me a long hard lesson regarding the importance of tolerance - and I despise those who are racists. Do I think Michiel intended malice by the comment? I really highly doubt it. The guy I've met at two Jewel concerts has always seemed friendly, open minded, and very kind. Not once did he excuse himself to scream epithets (racial slurs or words leaning toward sexual harrassment) at other patrons. One other thing: having a text-based medium such as email leaves big room for misunderstanding. What psychologists call prosody is often lost in the translation, so to speak. My point is, unless you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that words put together in a certain order are one hundred percent guaranteed-or-quintuple-your-money-back to be intended in a racist manner, don't put words in his mouth, especially such incindiary words. It's just crude. I really wish I could've been part of the EDAs when it was a very tight-knit group. Bearsville sounded great. Nowadays it seems like we're all looking out for our own interests, we're constantly at each other's throats, and we've lost the sense of community and understanding. Instead of Every Day Angels, we've turned into the Every Day Assholes, frankly. Shame on us - myself included. It's like the Beatles. They got together because they wanted to play great music. Not quite ten years later, they couldn't stand to be in the same room together. (Look at the tension level rising after the White Album.) Are we in our White Album phase? Even if so, the Beatles did record one final FANTASTIC album, Abbey Road. The Fab Four were able to look beyond their personal differences, and went out with a bang. (Not that I advocate we break up.) When I joined this list circa 1997 - right after Spirit came out, I read a synopsis of the group's workings, and thought it was for me. Helping out each other, alerting our neighbors about community service opportunities, etc., all hinged on our one common thread: we all like Jewel. Throughout the years, I've seen scant evidence of anything on this list other than bashing, bashing and more bashing. Very little togetherness. Very little support. Very little caring. Very little love. It's all very disheartening. I mean, we're all here for one reason. - --Ian Yahoo!
