Selling or providing bootlegs of her live > concerts is not a practice that Jewel nor her official fan club support. I guess every fan who's ever sent Jewel a tape of one of her shows should IMMEDIATELY write in, demanding that those tapes be returned and all copies they have destroyed, since the fans were providing copies of those boots to her management. Or, I suppose, people could remind fansrule that there is a world of difference between sharing and selling, and that Jewel's only stated position was asking folks to share without selling... Or we could just let them rewrite history. I looked on Ticket master and JewelJK, neither has the later shows listed. And if they are definite, when will we know about presale? I decided the only way I will join unedited is if there is a show near me. Otherwise I can't really justify the expense right now. Third and completely unrelated question; When did Jewel become against recording shows? When she didn't need the tapes to gain fans? Maybe if live shows were released, they wouldn't have to worry about bootleggers getting their hands on Angelfood and profiting. That's my best guess as to why. Before these tapes brought Jewel new fans who would then buy albums, now these shows may be bought by fans who want acoustic Jewel. "Don't wander too far, my one constant star. She is with the most cutthroat manager in the world now. Look up Irving Azoff and you won't find anything about him being a nice person and his other artists are outspoken against fans recording shows. Jewel might be forced to go along with that even if she doesnt agree with him. I dont know but we are not in Kansas anymore Toto. Now this Micheil thing about moderating. I love his site but with so many great downloads on it (US copyrite laws which is probably all that matters to her managers) and him asking for money on Jewels site (that was just a really stupid move!!) what did he expect? I bet him asking for money is what got them to look a lot closer about him. Add to that him saying he wants to see her nude all the time and posting photos that embarrass her on her own site can it really be a surprise that his moderatorship was taken away? I hate siding with her managers but if I am being honest I think they actually thought this through and did the right thing this time. The "moderation" position, no matter if you view it literally or more philosophically, requires the kind of actions and view points (both past & present) that sit on the moderate side of the fence - ie, no titty-photos, no *illegal* file sharing/hosting. It doesn't matter where your personal feelings reside, you have to be able to conduct yourself appropriately... It isn't a liberal leader position. There are certain things (show trading, etc) that we have to do in the dark, person to person, not on the jeweljk forums :) Speaking of Which, I can't wait to start trading again! woo! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Jan 2004 08:46:51 -0800 (PST) From: James Brogdon Subject: [EDA] Louisville, Front Row I got Front Row tickets to the Louisville, KY show for 3/21 via UnEdited! I wasn't particularly pleased with the service before, but I think that I got my value out of it. Thanks a lot "new management." Even if Michiel keeps the website, obviously the great downloads, pictures, and the rest won't be around, etc. And Nicole, in case you are reading this? If you think asking for small donations to keep a HUGE website going is trying to produce a "profit" off Jewel, you're crazy. With all that is provided on that site, it MUST cost a ton. I have a very small business website and that is expensive. Secondly, what practices DO all of you over at the official fan club support? Obviously not much, as we don't get much, even to your PAYING members that subscribed to Unedited. We rarely get notified of anything (that doesn't profit you, anyway), such as notification of TV appearances, updated pictures (once a month at best), very few FULL audio and video downloads, hardly any setlists, etc., -- and not much works over there or has been "coming soon" forever. Simple INFORMATION isn't even available from you. Jewelinks used to come almost daily. Now they're not even monthly. The only thing that is regularly provided from you is "new and improved" ways to purchase the expensive concert tickets. Even the promise of pre-sales for regular tickets for Unedited customers doesn't work well or consistently. As far as I can see, any donation to Michiel's site is money much better spent than the $40 I spent for Unedited. And BTW, I also don't remember Michiel "campaigning" to get Jewel to pose nude. Posting/stating a "wish" or "want" and hoping others agree with him, does NOT constitute a campaign. I hardly think Michiel thought he could actually petition fans to "get" Jewel to pose nude. And one would hope she wouldn't be that easily influenced to do something she didn't want to do. And as far as the photo booth mishap goes? Michiel obviously had to have gotten that from somewhere else as he wasn't in charge of the camera over at TRL. So maybe you should start at the source. I didn't totally agree with that posting either, but on the other hand, different cultures have different attitudes about things than the US does. Nudity/sex is one of those things. I also realize that Michiel, whose aim is suppose to be to promote Jewel with dignity and respect, dropped the ball on this one in my opinion, but give the guy a break -- and a second chance. And as much as I respect Jewel and her music, the whole photo booth thing wasn't a very smart move on HER part either. For as long as she's been in this business, she should have known better. She needs to take some responsibility in that whole mess too. Are you making her resign? I only know of ONE pic on Michiel's site that is "angled" up Jewel's skirt. Could that have had anything to do with where the photo was taken from? Probably shouldn't have been posted regardless, but to me, it just looks like a front row photo. Michiel's site and postings KEEP interest in Jewel going. I don't understand why you guys don't get that. Out-of-sight, out-of-mind. Not that Jewel fans are flighty -- but I have a business, a husband, kids, dogs, etc. When I go on the computer, it is so fast and convenient to check to see what's up at Michiel's site, so obviously I'm able to find out about, check on, want more from -- and therefore, SUPPORT -- Jewel. It's quick and easy. If I'm not able to do that, supporting Jewel couldn't possibly be in the forefront of my mind when I hit the computer the way it is now. And that includes the money I spend on things that relate to her -- ie: the $40 I spent on Unedited, among other things. Jewel's music is not the only music I like, but the information through the COMMUNITY OF FANS that surrounds her is what keeps me plugged in -- and BUYING!!!! I don't spend my money on any other musician the way I spend it on Jewel. You can thank Michiel and other fans for a lot of that. They have been pulling up YOUR slack. The old Jewel management, with their updated website and consistent Jewelinks, used to do that for me, but as stated above, that's a joke now. When the old management was in charge, I didn't often go to Michiel's -- or any other fan's -- website cause I knew what was going on through Jewelink and an INFORMATIVE Official Website and didn't have to. At this point, the way I see it? It's up to the fans. And BTW? That goes for the music, too. The more I get, the more I WANT. It takes me ONE DAY to get to the store to buy a new Jewel product, or product she's featured on. If possible, I pre-order. I like DMB, Neil Young, Dixie Chicks, Bob Dylan, Sara M, Alanis, Sheryl Crow. . . . .the list goes on. But I don't have even CLOSE to all of what has been released by any of those artists -- including CD's. And I have NEVER paid to be a part of ANY website any of them have. I don't even get to most other artists' concerts when they come my way. But I haven't missed an opportunity to go to a Jewel concert if she's within 100 miles of where I live since I discovered her, I've purchased every thing I know of that has been commercially released by her or features her, and I paid $40 on the CHANCE that I might get a good seat at a concert and a few audio and video downloads of songs I don't often hear or versions of the usual songs I've never heard. And I can't say it's because she's my favorite singer/songwriter either, because I have a lot of "favorites." Much of my interest in Jewel is not JUST about the music, but about the charitable aspect of Jewel's career, the "family-owned" career she had, the spiritual aspect she and Nedra weren't afraid to bring to business dealings and her music, the "do it or die" attitude she had from the beginning about doing what she loved with her life, AND the seemingly different kind of relationship Jewel had with her fans than other artists have with theirs. The fans and fan websites contributed to my understanding of Jewel from the beginning and continue to do so now. For all these reasons, I think Michiel should be able to keep his position on the Forum. Everyone deserves a second chance. Thank you, Theresa Gubrud ~~~~~~~~~~ Digest people, please don't respond to this. I know that some of you might not agree with my opinion, but it is mine and I have a right to it. I just don't want to get all these responses reaming me on it. Plus, it was kind of a "thought burst."
