Since what seems like day one people have predicted the death of the smoe mailing list and over the last years that I've been lurking around I've seen many friends come and go. I can understand that in '95 and '96 the internet was actually cool and new and many of us lost souls were awakened by the sense of community that lists like this provided. There is no going to back to those days for this or any other mailing list - hat's just a fact of life. But the slowness of the list in conjunction with the current management's disregard for fans seems to have slowly killed of a lot of the hard core fan base. I know many (fans and non-fan observers) will blame this on Jewel's new musical direction, but that isn't what slowed enthusiasm. It was mismanagement. One thing I always respected about Jewel was that she surrounded herself with some of the greatest talent that stayed true to core beliefs about others and music. That has more than changed in the last three months. I was just thinking today about the relative inactivity of the list and I thought I'd prove it wasn't just my imagination. I don't know the subscriber base from month to month, but I can get a sense from the size of the jewel-diget how much is being written about - which is true indicator of excitement about Jewel and fellow EDAs. Year-to-date total posts are off about 20% from last year, since August (the management change) we're down about 25% and since the first of October we're down 33%. There's a steep decline and I really don't see the trend reversing. Anyone else feel the same kind of impending doom? == Rob == "All the perfect drugs and superheroes wouldn't be enough to bring me up to zero," Aimee Mann ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Dec 2003 22:23:31 -0600 From: "Sarah Dowling" Subject: RE: [EDA] NJC: List observations I've been on this list (off and on but relatively constantly) for about 8 or so years. I was 13 when I joined, and now I'm 21. I've found that there's a different "feel" to the list as of late. I really felt that list used to be sustained (before) not only by Jewel discussions but by EDA discussions. There were talks of EDA gatherings and performances, community pick-up (EDAF) and all sorts of other "off topic" discussions. Now, I still see some of that, but I see a lot more basic discussions on Jewel: Is she a sellout? Will she come back to her folk roots? Is she still with Ty? What was she wearing? Why was she wearing it? Jewel is a goddess; no, she's just a woman; NO, SHE'S A GODDESS.... Etc, Etc. and on and on and on. It gets boring. Therefore, the list doesn't "hold" people as long. I stay around. I've tried iniating a few "community" discussions on things other than Jewe's latest garment trend, but haven't gotten much of a response. The sense of community will return when we have a community again. It takes work, and sharing. Not syrupy idol worship. Jewel promotes consciousness, thinking and exploring the world as well as having fun. Maybe there's some sort of project we could all do to get to know each other and/or give back? Something different. Who knows? It might even be FUN : ) _________________________________________________________________ Shop online for kids toys by age group, price range, and toy category at MSN Shopping. I'm studying for finals, and so am perhaps a little out of it. But I agree with Rob. And I miss this list "as a gathering of creative beings who enjoy and are inspired by the music Jewel creates." Maybe we still are that. Are we? _________________________________________________________________ Our best dial-up offer is back. The list population may well drop off, but I don't see doom. I have always met great Jewel fans through this list, and I'm still doing that (albeit at a far slower rate than in the past). Still, every time I meet an EDA I find it to be a special experience. I've made some great friends on this list. The Tara MacLean list I'm on only gets a few posts a month, and I don't sense any doom there, either. And Tara's career is a lot less active right now than Jewel's. But maybe this is all just my own relentless optimism. - -=-Larry-=- > [Original Message] > From: > To: > Date: 12/15/2003 7:08:33 PM > Subject: [EDA] NJC: List observations > {edit} > > But the slowness of the list in conjunction with the current management's > disregard for fans seems to have slowly killed of a lot of the hard core fan > base.
