Subject: [EDA] EP vs. LP Just to bring this into a modern context.. (even though these terms did originate with vinyls)... an LP is a full-length album. For example - Pieces of You, Spirit, Joy, This Way and 0304 are all LP's. An EP is basically somewhere between a single and an album. It's got more tracks than your usual single but less than an album. For example - Bits and Baubles, the exclusive Target release from 1999, is an EP. Radiohead's "I Might be Wrong", which featured live tracks, is an EP. Madonna is releasing a remix EP for her new single Nothing Fails. Hope that helps.... Steve PS - well done matt for emailing the J-team about what's been going on. The way they've handled this whole transition has been really poor and as much as I'm one for defending Jewel... the new website sucks, jewelink sucks and i'm glad i'm not an unedited member because it sounds like it's a big nightmare with little to no benefits. I encourage every Unedited member to write a similar email to the staff at Fansrule and in fact I would encourage you to suggest to them to contact MrBB and ask him how it's done. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Nov 2003 00:25:18 -0600 From: "Lew - New World Warehouse" Subject: Re: [EDA] njc: ep vs. lp (BONUS TRACK: Record companies) I think you pretty much covered it. These days, record companies don't really follow any "strict" standards of the types since they mainly applied to vinyl albums. Here's a basic breakdown of types: Single - usually one, maybe two songs per side at the most. This is mainly to promote one particular song. Around the 80's you could get a single of just about any song released that you heard on the radio. This was before record companies got greedy and decided they'd rather try and make you buy the whole album for one song...then all of a sudden they complain about internet downloading (hmmm...go figure). Many artists would include an unreleased or non-album song as a "B-side" (flip side of the cassette or vinyl) to give you something extra. I would many times buy up all the singles even though I already owned the album by an artist. Many foreign countries seem to still do this and that's why "Import" singles do so well over here. Maxi-Single - this seems to be something that started mainly with CDs. I think there were a few cassettes that had them. They are in between a Single and EP. Many times these would contain variations of the same song or songs (like the Break Me remixes). They would sometimes include remixes, radio edits and possibly a "B-side" as well. They are basically the length of an EP without the variation. EP - Extended Play. These would be like "Half an Album." Many artists release these when they have a lot of songs they want to get out quick or they are for a special project. For instance, The Beatles Yellow Submarine soundtrack (the original, not the "songtrack") was originally released as an EP in England, but in the U.S. they felt that consumers wanted a full album so they added the film score on there as well instead of just the Beatles songs written for the movie. I usually consider an EP to be no more than 5-7 tracks (songs). I think the general rule of thumb is an EP will last around 30 mins. LP - Long Play. This is what is considered a full album. Traditionally around 10 - 12 tracks and lasts about an hour. These days, this is about all you can get by your favorite artists except for the occasional single. Typing this, I realize now why the record companies have stopped making as much money. They stopped offering the variety they used to have. It's like soda companies only allowing you to buy drinks in 24 packs. No single cans, no 6 packs. I have a feeling a lot of people would stop drinking as MUCH soda then. I remember walking into a record store a long time ago and there was a huge section that had all the new singles. If you didn't like an artist that much, but liked the one song, you would go and get the single. You'd be surprised if you couldn't find the single for a song that was playing on the radio. These days all they do is try for album sales and many people would rather download or do without the song than spend $15 for one song. I mean, I was looking for the new Korn song (Did my Time) that was from the Tomb Raider movie. It's not even on the Tomb Raider movie SOUNDTRACK !!! They are waiting to promote their upcoming album with it on there so I had to hit Ebay to find a promo single of it. I don't believe it's the fault of any bands really, this would be a total marketing thing from the record companies. It's really sad. I miss the days when it was fun to collect all the items from one album (singles, EPs, etc.). Please don't use the word "Bomb" in the same paragraph with "next Jewel single". I know you mean bomb in the good sense, but that might be bad karma lol. I do agree though, Yes U Can is the 3rd best song on the album so we gotta go with that one. We'll see...
