But to operate under the belief that they do what they do because they owe it to anyone but them selves truly drains the honesty and art out of thier work. > > From: JewelBlues@aol.com > Date: 2003/10/13 Mon AM 01:17:07 EDT > To: jewel@smoe.org > Subject: [EDA] HYPOTHETICAL > > In a message dated 10/13/03 1:06:18 AM Eastern Daylight Time, > owner-jewel-digest@smoe.org writes: > > << > SHE OWES US NOTHING. The EDA list has changed a lot over the past couple years, but i know that a lot of the originals are still lurking and around. And I know that a lot of newbies have a shared love and understanding of not just jewel but music as a whole. But it still saddens me to read a lot of stuff like the earlier post's. We witnessed somewhat of a debate between my self and another EDA which concluded with a private email to me in which they said "she panders to us!" about Jewel. I concluded my last post to the list by saying scary. Well thats nothing compared to how i feel about a comment like "she panders to us!". I don't even know where to start, so I will end it by saying, How self important can we be?? 1 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Oct 2003 03:31:33 EDT From: CleaningDuster@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Watch out (Jewel Today) Dear fellow EDA's, I just wanted to give a warning to everybody on this list: the warning is to make sure the opinion you express on this list is the opinion shared by everybody else or else you will get countless emails judging you, calling you names, and generally putting you down! If you enjoy treatment like this please continue and post your own opinion! But dont worry about backing your claim up, because the minute a person with the extreme opposite point of view debates it, accuse them off attacking you and all will be well. How silly of me to think I was allowed to defend the person this list is dedicated too. And how foolish was I to try and use logic to do so. > From: CleaningDuster@aol.com > Date: 2003/10/13 Mon AM 03:31:33 EDT > To: jewel@smoe.org > Subject: [EDA] Watch out (Jewel Today) > > Dear fellow EDA's, > I just wanted to give a warning to everybody on this list: the warning is to > make sure the opinion you express on this list is the opinion shared by > everybody else or else you will get countless emails judging you, calling you > names, and generally putting you down! "we owe it all to the fans" said in an interview or accepting some award means "yeah, we got this award because of our fans" or "we have fame & success because of our fans" they aren't say "yeah, we owe the fans lots of free stuff, we should be at their beck & call & do what they want"... they are not saying they actually OWE you something... it's just a "saying".. like some might say "I owe this award to God for blessing me with talent" or "I owe it all to my dog for sticking by my side" they aren't actually saying they indeed do owe the award to God or their dog & are going to walk off stage & give it them, they mean, if it hadn't been for them, they wouldn't be where they are. (be warned, slight rant, and it's not directed at the person who wrote the email, it is just in general) So yes, if it wasn't for fans buying records, & supporting them, they might not be successful... but that doesn't mean that the artist actually OWES you anything just because of that. If you buy a CD, all the artist owes you is the music on the CD, that is what you paid for. They don't owe you an autograph.... when you buy tickets to their concert, they owe you the music they are playing on stage... they don't owe you a picture with them afterwards just because you stood outside for an hour waiting... and they don't owe you the concert of your dreams in the venues YOU want whenever & whereever you want it. They don't owe you a concert at all, unless they plan a tour & you buy tickets, & can't get your money refunded for them. So while it may be disappointing... they don't have to do it...and just because they were in a rush that day when you wanted an autograph, or they were tired that day you wanted the picture after the concert, does not mean they don't give enough back to the fans. ANY time she signs something, does a contest on her website, stops for pictures, she is giving you more than you are owed. People seem to forget that celebrities are real people... they have bad days, they get tired after promoting things on tv shows & radio stations & doing photo shoots & then playing a 2 hour long concert later.... all some people can think about around here is "me me me".... it's "well, *I* waited around for an hour after her concert, and it was cold, and what a b*tch, she didn't even stop & sign my 4 cd's & 2 books & 3 pictures! I hate her after all the support I've given her!" or "she owes us a better tour after cancelling an already bad tour, these venues suck & I don't want to see her in them, they aren't big 10,000 seat venues like I want, they'll only fit 1,000 people which means she sucks & she's not as popular as I thought, so I can't like her, and who cares about t-bones death, she could have replaced the bass player & kept the tour, she should do what I want because I bought her cd & helped her pay for those boots she's wearing" be glad she's even playing a solo acoustic tour, she doesn't have to. once and for all, SHE OWES US NOTHING. ~ Sandy ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Oct 2003 08:08:47 -0700 From: "Melissa Bruce" Subject: Re: [EDA] HYPOTHETICAL well.... I find it wonderful when a big name artist plays smaller venues. It shows that they are not in it just for the money. Sure, she could sell out huge arenas, but she is playing smaller venues to connect with her fans. It's not because she is a has been. :) Mi Rinda she's playing shows close to home, lets not forget she lives in California... and she usually plays a bunch of small solo acoustic shows there...to me, that isn't a lack of self respect, that ROCKS that an artist as big as her would be willing to play small places that usually do not get to see any big acts there. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Oct 2003 11:21:15 -0700 From: "Melissa Bruce" Subject: [EDA] 1st part NJR/2nd part re: wrong/messed up Jewel lyrics : ) NJR: Has anyone ever noticed, that when you do a spell check on the word "aahnold," it knows to suggest "arnold" like it gets the joke?
