I guess I almost feel guilty for being such a bitch about 0304, because it really isn't my favorite kind of music -- no matter who's singing it. She genuinely seems to really like and be proud of this album -- that doesn't seem like hype to promote it, I don't think anyway. This tour must have been one she was especially looking forward to for those reasons, and then to cancel it must have been heartbreaking on a variety of levels, not just the obvious one (T-Bone). And the release of the album she is that proud of coincides with all the things Fabio listed -- her management, the messed up website, etc. Then figure in the sales lost and the inability for the singles to do as well as they maybe should -- no tour, no website and no "real" management has to = low sales -- and you wonder how she must be feeling about it all. Sales and top whatever lists cannot have an actual picture of how well the album and singles could have done. I guess I just feel bad cause she's kinda made "excuses" for all her previous albums (in one way or another based on how she felt her skills were, regardless of how they did), had trouble in the past with sales and the obvious "radio-play" issue, and seems to truly feel this is her best work -- and probably felt it would also be able to hit all the bases it needed to cover to be successful (that her other albums maybe missed on). Then there are these huge changes that are out of her control and it screws it all up! Timing is everything. And the timing sucks for her. It kinda hit me on Primetime, when they mentioned that Ty was on the cell phone listening to the interview. Sounds like something I'd do if I was feeling totally vulnerable and out of balance (my husband is the rock in our house). Also wanted to ask you all, the acoustic tours are not coming to our venue, so if anyone has angelfood of any of these shows, please let me know. I have a TON to trade for. The question was who's the sang Intuition, but the contestand couldn't answer the question. And I found out that no really knows Jewel here in the Philippines, because the question was wrong the host mentioned Jewel's album as 2003 instead of 0304.Probably the researcher don't even know Jewel at all. u ~~`boyCradle` Proud To Be A Pinoy!!! It started of showing parts of "Intuition", and there was a slight introduction, and then the lvideo was compared to Britney's. She asked Jewel how she felt about being compared, Jewel said it was odd or something and that alot of ppl missed the obvious paradies in the video. In goes on showing ALOT of clips (songs and stuff) from the Life Uncommon home video. Really brief summary of her rise to stardom. Then the interviewer explained that they we're backstage at her show in Atlanta. Asked about Ty, Jewel said he was a "Real Man", blah blah, bought a house in LA, showed clips of the Stand video (Jewel with hair down looking very nice "normal".... Then there was a shocker. The interviewer started talking about Jewel's dad. Said something about one of her poems about her dad and that her dad gave her permission to use it in the book. THEN the interviewer says its obvious that you were hit lets talk about it....something to that nature....And jewel was like uhhhh, obviously shocked that the question came up, and she said twice, ummm let's not get into those details...did u turn into Barbara walters? I was weird cause I never heard anything about this but by the look on jewel's face she was like wtf u have some nerve. Then they showed some clips of Atlanta's concert, Jewel taking the stage, Everything breaks, a bit of intuition Thats about it ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Sep 2003 03:55:17 EDT From: SullMa84@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Tour Thoughts // SCC First off I want to remind everyone that even though the SCC MusicQuest winners haven't been opening, atleast not yet, they are still getting paid. I'm sure it's more about the exposure than the money to them, but they weren't left out in the cold. I can't remember the exact price on the contact, but I am pretty sure that they are getting paid $500 per scheduled show....can't recall. The 0304 Tour will most likely be rescheduled for the beginning of the 2004. There is tooo much money put in (stage designs, lighting, tour books) to just cancel it. Financially, it would be a REALLY stupid decision not to tour. The tour books that were printed will probably still be used, because Jewel doesn't put the dates of the shows in the book, just the cities, so they would still be relevant in a re-vamped tour. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Sep 2003 04:09:01 EDT From: SullMa84@aol.com Subject: [EDA] MusicToday Refund Problems I FINNAY got the refund for the cancelled show on my credit card, but they shorted me $10 for shipping, even thought the tickets were never even printed let alone shipped. She played for almost exactly 1:15. It was mostly straight from song to song, at least as for the interaction she did have it was brief with no 5 - 10 minute stories (and if you've heard them enough times you don't mind missing them on one show per tour). There was no encore because she started the WWSYS slightly after she was supposed to go off stage and they were being hard core about opening doors at 10:00 for their late show (hey, it was raining - I'm sure that the people who were outside didn't want to get completely soaked because we wanted to hear Chime Bells). It was a remarkably quiet show. Her voice and guitar were very low volume, had you wanted to you would have been able to have conversation with the person next to you throughout the show, thankfully no one near me decided to go this route (it was quiet enough that you could hear each bottle get dropped in the trash throughout the show). What's up with Standing Still and the DC area? First she chokes on popcorn at an area summer radio show and then last night she chokes on laughter and can barely finish out the song (this was a very funny moment though). Deep Water was a pretty good highlight as I don't remember her playing it solo acoustic before last night (I'd reference some more recent setlists to be sure but they still don't have the site up and running), at least not on the past couple of tours. She had trouble remembering lyrics to any of the new songs, I wonder if she's trying as hard to forget 0304 as we are. Although, I have to admit that they translated very well to the acoustic show. Haunted and Stand stick out above 2 Become 1 and Intuition. On Haunted she actually borrowed a CD booklet from someone in the crowd to cheat on the lyrics because she had stumbled through a bit of Stand. Jewel live was just about what you would expect from her, she will always put on one of the best shows that you can see anywhere. She put as much into 75 minutes as she could, and it was evident that she was having fun in the intimate club setting. I think that the key word for her on this abridged tour is cathartic. With as much as has been going wrong for her, she seems to be having a good time with this and I think she's using these shows as part of her healing process. She was emotional when introducing WWSYS, and why wouldn't she be.... The crowd cheered for an encore, and her people asked the 9:30 Club's people, but to no avail. There aren't however very many artists who are going to give you as much in an hour and fifteen minutes. Catch her if you can, there's no telling how long it'll be before the next go around considering all that may be reevaluated following these few shows. Later, Dave ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Sep 2003 18:20:36 -0230 From: "Mark Austin" Subject: [EDA] Re: When everything seems to be going wrong Well, I wouldn't get too worried. Only some of her fans are bashing her, and these acoustic shows (and probably the content of Stand and maybe its video) will be a great way to get back at the few fans that are bashing her. And I think with every new album shes come out with, there were always some people who said "sell out" or that she was changed or that she sucked now. So I guess we should just let that be. Jewel had to finance most of 0304 herself (hence the commercial, I guess), all because Atlantic didn't think it would sell. So I think that proves every notion that shes a sell-out wrong. (Unless of course, Jewel is a big fat liar, which I'm sure we all know is not true.) Anyways, Stand's video is supposed to be out really really soon. And it must of slipped by you, because it entered the top 40 in the American charts at 38 this week. : ) If it becomes a hit, it should bring the album back up into the charts easily. Don't get worried yet! Even if she did have to cancel her tour, shes doing GREAT with the acoustic shows. As far as I know they're selling really really well. Its great for her image, it lets people know that she's still Jewel, and its just really really nice to see her alone with her guitar like that after all this electronic stuff. On Soul City Cafe, they said that they would have the contest winners opening at later shows, probably whenever she gets her band up and running again. Don't worry yet. The SCC contest was a big thing, I'm sure they won't waste it. And she may not of done amazing in the UK, but if you remember others posts, Intuition was her biggest hit by far and 0304 is selling well in other countries in Europe and Asia. So, to sum it all up for all you lazy people, lol: Jewel lost some fans: No big deal. She also made a lot of new ones, and most that didn't like 0304 still look forward to her next album. Stand? Its currently debuting at #38 in the top 40 this week : ) Video coming out any day now. Acoustic concerts = GOOD SCC winners: We'll see them sometime in the future, don't worry. Overseas success: not in the UK, but great elsewhere. And like I said in my last post to the list, I think she's got a GREAT handle on her sexy/beautiful new image now. Hope that makes you feel better, Fabio and anyone else with his worries! ;D Peace, Mark _________________________________________________________________ The new MSN 8: smart spam protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V8 #411 ***************************
