Britney with Brains By David Sinclair New albums: Our critic applauds Jewel's reinvention as intelligient pop babe JEWEL 0304 Atlantic IF JEWEL HAD emerged as a new act with 0304, she would have been hailed as a pop genius. A collection of street-savvy tunes with literate lyrics, it is miles better than the last two Madonna albums. It is also effortlessly smarter, sexier and edgier than the much-vaunted debuts by Avril Lavigne and Michelle Branch. But in pop, context and timing are crucial, and Jewel Kilcher is neither a veteran global superstar nor a prodigy on the fast-track to the teen-mag gossip columns. She is the geek poet from the boondocks of Alaska who made her mark in 1995 with the massive-selling debut Pieces Of You, an album of unadorned acoustic folk songs. Lacking any sort of artifice, she was, for all her success, a militantly cool-free zone, the girl without guile, who carried round a Tupperware container filled with soil from the farm where she grew up, to remind her of her roots. Now 29, Jewel is on to her fourth album, and the earnest, navel-gazing strummer has blossomed into a navel-baring pop babe, a reinvention that has her in the opposite direction to the norm. In much the same way that Whitney Houston turned from a teenaged hausfrau into the latexed dominatrix of her middle years, so Jewel has passed through the jeans and sensible shirt phase of her youth to end up in a pink mini-skirt and cheerleader top. In doing so, she has applied a new-found lightness of touch to a highly developed songwriting craft. Musically, there is a fresh spring in the step to songs such as Run 2 U, with its dancefloor beat and little electronic arabesques. In a more sensual vein, Leave the Lights On has a languid, trip-hop feel to it, while on numbers like Yes U Can and 2 Become 1, the listener is assailed by great pop hooks and surging choruses at every turn. But that does not mean she has left her brain at the door, and if you can get past the text-speak song titles (Prince has a lot 2 answer 4), it is Jewel's lyrics that really give this album its edge. However, she frequently sketches her thoughts and feelings on a broader canvas, as on Intuition, where she uses a brilliant, Britney-esque strut to deliver a piercing critique on the shallowness of today's social mores: "In a world of postmodern fad/ What was good now is bad." And on two songs - Stand and America - she takes a social/emotional snapshot of her country that berates and celebrates the land of the free in broadly equal measure: "Marvin Gaye there's no brother, brother/ Woody Guthrie's land can't feed mother." Then there is the not-so-small matter of her voice, which remains an instrument of bell-like purity but which has now acquired a seductive, playful dimension that was lacking in her younger incarnation. "If you let me be me, I'll be better than your best dream," she promises on the provocative U & Me = Love. The problem for Jewel, and her record company, will be in alerting the potential audience for this album to its existence. In America, it has already been a success. But in Britain, where she is less well known even as a "serious" singer-songwriter, Jewel is so far off the teen radar that it may be a struggle for her to break into the mass market at this stage of the game. Albums that treat the pure pop idiom with intellectual respect are a rarity. And albums of any genre that sound as good as this do not come along often enough for 0304 to be allowed to fall through the cracks. - ------- Chris. http://www.jewelfan.co.uk : Jewel - Pieces Of UK http://pub70.ezboard.com/fmusicpromosdiscussionfrm14 : Official UK Jewel Forum ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Aug 2003 13:50:16 EDT From: LAJEWEL10@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Jewel boston show i have extra tickets!!! hey everyone! i know this might be a little late and i'm sure most all of you have tickets to the boston show if you are planning to go. but i have a pair of extra tickets!!! my mom and i both bought tickets to the same show and don't need both sets of tickets! the tickets i'm trying to get rid of are sec 2 row z. so they are pretty good seats! all i'm asking for is the amount that i paid for them. if anyone is interested please e-mail me back privatly! thanks! ~laura~ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Aug 2003 11:54:01 -0700 (PDT) From: cristian louvier Subject: [EDA] shiva diva Do any of you know how many Shiva Diva Doo Wop tapes were made? It is a really cool picture. I've never seen it before. It is promoting people magazine. It says, "You probably this of tank tops and jeans." Jewel defies your expectations, in PEOPLE Magazine, June 2, 2003. Then at the bottom of the page it says, folksy. Jazzy. Foxy. Evolving artist or fashion plate? We celebrate both. Every week, every issue, every emotion for 36 million readers. People. At the heart of every story. It is a really good ad. The picture is really pretty. She is wearing an orange-pinkish dress with fringe and her hair is done up. For the setting she is in a room and a piano is behind her and she is sitting on the seat with her legs crossed. I love when there are little surprises like that in magazines. haha :) I'm happy now.......
