She goes from an inteimate setting of a Symphony Hall (More suited for her voice and music) to a Night Club which hosts Rock and Heavy Metal bands. I was thinking of going but now am not since going downtown for a concert in the middle of the week is crazy. She is going to regret this as the 9:30 club only holds 1000 people at most. This concert will sell out in less than five minutes on Saturday/Friday (Not sure what day they go on) when they go to the public and with the number of fans that she has there will be an uproar when they don't get tickets. I know many major acts have performed there but they usually do at the beginning of their career or when they are apart of a tour that is only going to clubs, such as the Honda Civic tour. But, it's not strange at all to have canceled Wicomico in Salisbury, MD. Let's face it - the Wicomico Civic Center only has success hosting country acts for the most part - and it's a much bigger place than Jewel should be playing in such a small market. I'm not too clear on canceling Myerhoff though. She hasn't played a Baltimore show in a very long time. 9:30 club seems like an odd choice to replace it with. Especially when all comparable venues in Washington, DC are open (Warner Theatre, Constitution Hall, Lincoln Theatre - throw in Lisner Auditorium and Kennedy Center if you like). You would expect that they could do Myerhoff, then go down 95 for a show at one of those venues that make more sense and are more comparable to a lot of other venues that are on the tour. However, I'm not going to say that it's a mistake. It's not without precedent at all. An artist's management is likely to put a few shows up for sale without launching ticket sales for an entire tour. Then they look for key indicators and make changes according to their own marketing strategy. When the tour dates were first announced the two shows on back to back nights in MD seemed very out of place. Especially the Salisbury - Wicomico show. They've put a few shows on sale and decided to make some changes. There's also likely been changes made to the other legs that haven't been announced yet. Insofar as finding it odd that management posted dates before they were final - everything in this business is subject to change until the tickets are actually printed. It's very common for dates to get shuffled before the tickets go on sale. Hell - even after tickets sell, things change. Playing the 9:30 club is a very curious move. One that I would have expected would be made on an acoustic tour and not during a band tour. Maybe they want to get some press out of the club show and show people that Jewel is reconnecting with her fans at the start of the tour. It's entirely probable that there will be more than one show there. If you check the 9:30 schedule you'll see that the night before and the night after this show are free. Maybe she'll do a night with band and a night acoustically. Maybe she'll do all three nights. In any case - it's highly probable that there will be more than one show. There are definitely more influential radio stations and other media outlets in DC. Maybe she's doing a lot of press in the area to promote the album and this overlapped nicely. But - to call it a mistake, well I have to give her management team the benefit of the doubt that they know more about this than we do. Just in case the scheduled show IS the only one - I for one am going to get a ticket as early as possible. Maybe this will be a tour highlight - if nothing else, we'll be likely to get an extra couple of songs with the consideration that the club's curfew will not be as strict. Oh well.... wait and see I guess. On the bright side.. Every Jewel interview that I've seen, she seems very personable and friendly.. Making jokes, etc..
