I heard this a few nights ago on the PBS series Ken Burns' Jazz, and it reminded me a bit of the current atmosphere surrounding Jewel. The quote is from Branford Marsalis, when asked about Charlie Parker: "...my favorite Charlie Parker record... is a record called 'Charlie Parker With Strings' where he was just playing pop tunes of the time. ...a lot of people at the time hated that record 'cause they're saying Charlie Parker had sold out. But what he did was absolutely revolutionary because he played these songs, he played them in a way that they had never been played before, you know, and he was still Charlie Parker. It's not like he sold out his identity to play these songs..." Now, I'm not making any comparisons between Jewel and Charlie Parker. And I certainly wouldn't call 0304 "revolutionary"... I'm just sayin'... this isn't the first time something like this has come up, and I'm sure it won't be the last. And if you don't know who Charlie Parker was... look him up online. Listen to some of his work. It'll be worth your time. Later... Rob _______________________________________ "This hit me: It's more important to love than be loved. This does not infer a martyr's resolve. It meant solely this: Requited love was a gift. It meant fuck-all by spiritual measure.
