And it may be partly true. But the fact is, the main reason for the change is she couldn't sell enough tickets. She tried to sell the stadiums out for a few days, but the selling pace was much less than expected. As a fan, you may dispute that to death, but she can't sell out stadiums in anything but the biggest cities in the country right now. It's the same reason Jewel canceled her New Year's Eve concert in Alaska a few years ago. There were other reasons, but analysts say she wasn't selling enough tickets. - -- Scott http://scott.rocket-fish.org/ http://syd.rocket-fish.org/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jun 2003 16:01:29 -0400 From: "Chrissy Pfingst" Subject: Re: [EDA] 2 Find U or 2 Become 1 I think that while it is not a lyrically brilliant song, Yes U Can would do well on radio. Particularly if I were a Jewel fan in Europe, I'd seriously consider just getting a multi format VCR, and either a TV or a PC card to view it. If you wanted, at that point you could even save to MPEG and trade them around that way too. Full quality mpeg is actually pretty good, just requires a pretty powerful computer to handle it. The cards come with some limited software, and apparently there's quite a bit written for linux that'll do the job, too. The VCRs cost more than normal ones, but they can be used for both, so it's not such a bad deal, and you don't have to pay per tape. =) > I've traded some angelfood for some VHS concert recordings. I'm by NO MEANS a Mariah Carey fan and I wouldn't be caught dead at one of her concerts. But I thought I should clarify this - Mariah originally had an arena tour booked and announced. The tickets were selling pretty well and everything was hunky-dory. However, her fans on her message board started rumbling about how it would be cool to see Mariah in a more intimate environment. So - in response to those requests, she pulled the arena tour and rescheduled the entire thing in more "intimate" venues .... don't forget, the big venues WERE selling well... it was no problem. However, chances of them selling OUT were probably slim... so I think Mariah figured this is the perfect time in her career to perform smaller venues - plus it's what the fans want. She's also got people voting on her website for what songs to play in each city etc. I think it's pretty cool, personally. But again - I'm not a Mariah fan AT ALL. Steve. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Jun 2003 12:13:44 +1000 From: Fredsteve Subject: [EDA] 2nd week sales Hey Guys So Jewel had an ok 2nd week. She lost 43% of her first week sales, selling 80 787 copies, according to Hits. That puts her two-week total at approximately 224 000 copies. Unfortunately, due to the high volume of new releases all debuting in the Top 10 (5, altogether)... she dropped 9 spots out of the top 10 to #11. This may be different on the Billboard chart. She might be #10, she might be #12. Who knows. We'll see. The Hits and Billboard chart do tend to differ when the figures are close. I hope she's still in the Top 10 on the billboard chart. Anyway - a 40% drop isn't unusual for an artist coming off their first week. However, hopefully she won't drop that much next week. I'd be surprised if she did. If the sales can level out at somewhere between 50 and 80 000 a week for the next few weeks... then that would be great. All she needs is to level at a decent figure and sell consistently. Given the success of the single thus far, I'd say levelling in the Top 20 is reasonable to predict.... she might even jump back into the Top 10 once some of the debuts from last week begin to fall - I don't think Annie Lennox, Joe Budden and George Strait will remain in the Top 20 for long... and even Radiohead might drop below her soon - since they are a very fanbase oriented band. Whereas, I think Jewel is selling well because she has a hit single. And I think it'll keep going for a while. Although I could be very wrong. Oh - and Intuition has lost it's bullet. It's -28 spins now. I'm sure Atlantic will do everything in their power this week to pull the song out of it's hole... however, I'd say at this point it's over. I'd love it to bounce back and there's definitely room on the chart for her at this point... but I doubt that will happen. However, it's not unheard of. But the main thing is - they need to pick a second single and get it out FAST.. like impacting within the next month at the most. It's really important at this point, because the album needs a successful single out there to continue selling. I do believe that the success of Intuition thus far will propell sales for the next few weeks... but beyond that the second single is really needed. This Way stopped selling when Standing Still peaked on radio. The reason it didn't continue selling was that Break Me flopped. So the second single is really crucial. Anyway - enough of my rant. Steve. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V8 #281 ***************************
