Has Jewel actually chosen a new manager yet, or is this all rumour and speculation?! There's a great book on the music industry called Hit Men, by journalist Fredric Dannen. It contains quite a few references to Irving Azoff that would make one wonder if his personality is a match for Jewel (unless he's changed a lot since the book's 1991 publication date). Hit Men describes Azoff as "easily one of the most loathed men in the music business. His tantrums are extraordinary." Its says he's known to his friends as the "Poison Dwarf" and recalls such incidents as Azoff setting fire to his menu when service was too slow at a Beverly Hills restaurant, and threatening to throw a tv out his hotel room window if staff couldn't silence the street construction workers, and so on. The book quotes other music biz legends and record company competitors on each other. David Geffen said of Azoff: "He's just done so many bad things to so many people, including me, that at one point I said, Enough! Who needs this? What he is, is devilish. And that's interesting on some level, but not nearly as interesting as intelligence, or charm, or wit, or real true ability. Irving is involved in some drama of self-importance. And he thinks that in order to be powerful., or important, you have to fuck with people. Or frighten them, or be awful to them, which I find unacceptable behavior." Walter Yetnikoff (former head of CBS Records) said that Azoff always lies - "it's not a character flaw, it's a genetic defect." "Irving lies when it's to his advantage to tell the truth. He just can't help it." The book reports that Azoff and his former record label, MCA, was implicated in a music industry scandal involving suspicions of racketeering and Mafia associations in the mid'80s - but the government investigation was shut, seemingly because of MCA's connections to then U.S. President Ronald Reagan. Hit Men is a fascinating read - and glimpse into the big leagues of the U.S. recording industry. It sure does seem like a big shift from Nedra, if, in fact, Jewel is going with such a legend. I guess we'll see what happens! She said at JEWELSTOCK in 1996 a kid was trying to kick heroin for 10 days and he played AMEN over and over and it saved his life. Do you think playing INTUITION is going to be the kind of "happy pop" music a heroin addict would listen to? HEll no. he might kill himself to LISTEN to intuition. The inspiration for the hopeless, helpless, those who felt alientated, those who felt alone. -HAS left US. The NEW JEWEL 'the FUN" Jewel---is not what people in NEED or who NEEDED her wil l want to hear..its just NOT the kind of music those HURTING listen to--and belevie me--she USED to be a soothing calm for MANY people HURTING. And there arent many to REPLACE her...Its sad....So the commericalism she now wants (POPSTAR) with the LIGHT airy songs....is a dismay to anyone ..in PAIN, IN ISOLATION, FEELING DESPERATE..ETC. SHE IS LETTING DOWN...THOSE WHO counted on her..to SAVE THEM...she wont be SAVING THEIR SOULS....I KNOW I KNOW--perhaps shes TIRED of "saving peoples Lives" and she "Wants to have fun" and "cant she have fun if she WANTS to have fun".....the answer to that is--SHE SURE CAN--she can do WHATEVER she WANTS--but it IS on her conscience to ignore...those who counted on her for so long as a ray of hope i na world of Chaos, confusion, and lies. We certainly don't sound like the best fans in the world. It's alright to not like the album, the image or even the dog, but to call Jewel a "whore to the industry" is just wrong. We've come to know what Jewel beliefs are and she still has them with her. Yes, she has changed, but guys, she was 18 when she started! She is almost 30 now!!! If she were still the same folk chick, THEN I would be worried. She has done many great things to the world and to my ears, I would just feel bad saying, without even knowing her in person, that she sold out. I don't know, that's how I feel... I think Jewel was really lucky to have someone like Lenedra who is both smart, savvy and personally invested in Jewel to guide her through the foundation of her career. I think it makes sense for Lenedra who I think has done an amazing job to step down and work on other projects. I'm sure their choice of Irving Azoff as new manager was a thoughtful as well as strategic one...I think that Jewel was really lucky to have Nedra as manager for those "formative" career years and now it's probably better all around...that's so cute about the movie thing...business can get in the way of other things and the thought of Jewel and Nedra being able to just hang out without worrying about sales and all that stuff (which I'm sure they do anyway, although I'm sure the pressures become crazy at times) is just so nice. Sounds like a good move for all involved...right timing, etc. Lenedra rocks!!! When Jewel asked me to be involved at the start of her career, I told her I'd manage for five years, and it's been ten now. They have been ten really amazing years, and you know a lot of the stories of our development of her career together. As other business opportunities have developed, as well as our work with Higher Ground for Humanity and the ClearWater Project, I have watched my energy and interest move more in that direction and away from management, and I feel it's time to make that move complete. As Jewel and I have discussed this, we've felt that the timing is perfect in terms of what is happening in the music industry. With the crisis the industry is in, things have become much more difficult for artists. Downloading and other factors have greatly impacted artists' revenues, and a high level of business expertise is needed now. Harder times have drastically changed the relationship of artists with all areas of the industry, making the management role as guard dog more important than ever. To fill this role, Jewel has chosen the team of Irving Azoff and his staff at Azoff Music Management. She chose Irving for a number of reasons. A high level of management connectivity in the industry is really needed for her right now, and Irving certainly brings that to the table, along with a wealth of industry experience. Important to her is his development of long-term career artists such as the Eagles and Steely Dan. Irving has a reputation for being very tough and I know he will protect her at all costs, which is crucial right now. I am also impressed with the fact that so many of his artists and employees have been with him for nearly thirty years; the focus on loyalty and taking care of each other is great. I'm also satisfied that the understanding and enthusiasm for Jewel's talent as a singer-songwriter and performer are primary in his interest in her. Also important to me is the range of services and expertise that a larger company provides. So I support her choice of new management and also assure you that I will be around to consult and be involved as well--I'm certainly not walking away entirely! I think the thing Jewel and I most look forward to is having more time for our personal relationship. It seems in the past year and a half, with the crisis the music industry is in, we never even have time to go to a movie together. So we can't wait to have more time to enjoy each other without the continual demands of her career always coming first. I have to say that my contact with all of you has always been a highpoint for me and I would miss that going away, so we'll find ways for me to still be in touch. You know I think you are the greatest fans on earth!
