Oh my god - is this your attempt at satire? It's not working.... How about - Jewel and her mom have been pulled in a lot of different directions working very hard and now she is going to concentrate on one thing while allowing someone else who has had some measure of success do their thing. Beyond that - Jewel has ALWAYS had one of the cheapest concert tickets in the industry - her average ticket price for all of last year was only pennies above $31.00. Jewel has always been better to her fans than almost anyone - has anyone on this list ever seen Jewel refuse a fan ANYTHING? She is one of the most accessible stars around. Have some faith everyone - Jewel is not going to let someone take her in a direction that she doesn't want to go. She has always been true to herself and her fans. Is one new addition to J-team really going to screw all that up? If anyone can name someone that has sold 20,000,000+ units and is still as accessible to their fans I'd like to know who they are. Really - I would. Let's just have some small measure of faith that Jewel isn't going to disappoint us - - because for the large part, she hasn't yet. Of course - that's just my opinion - I could be wrong. If you had Lenedra's book, you would realize that she helped Jewel to realize the potential that was in her and to go about realizing her dreams in an unconventional manner. I would think that is one quality we love about Jewel is the fact that her career and art is unconventional. So to trash Lenedra is not right. I would recommend reading her book in order to get a better idea of how Jewel realized her dreams and to get a better idea of Jewel's relationship with Lenedra. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Jun 2003 12:29:14 EDT From: Mgsju@aol.com Subject: [EDA] New York Times mention There is a brief mention of Jewel in this morning's (Sunday) New York Times. It appears on page 27 of the Arts and Leisure section in a column called "Playlist." Jewel: Jewel can do anything pretty well: folk, country, poetry, acting, and, with her new album "0304", dance-pop. There's nothing ever drastically wrong with her work-in fact, the dynamic range of the song "Haunted" is rather impressive. But there is a ceiling (positioned somewhere above average and below great) that she hits every time. It's accompanied by a photo of her touching hands of audience members at what looks to be the Z100 show at Giant Stadium. Michele ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Jun 2003 12:42:49 EDT From: Mgsju@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Jewel Unedited Thanks to everyone who responded to my question about Unedited. I managed to log in yesterday without difficulty. For those of you who are still pondering whether to sign up, personally I think it's a great site. I was a little concerned because I have an ancient computer and am still using AOL 6.0 but I was able to enjoy all of the multimedia content without a problem. It took a few seconds for things to download but nowhere near as long as I thought. Although I was slightly disappointed to hear that the audio and video were only clips, I was expecting 30 to 45 seconds of each song. Instead, each file runs for an average of 2 minutes with a few covering a significant portion of the song for about 3 minutes. I did notice something regarding the dates of the performances. On both the audio and video pages, they list two separate performances as being on the same date. And the locations are pretty far away from each other. Did anyone else catch that? Michele P.S. Did anyone order the Pay-per-view special? Did she perform? I noticed they're re-running it a bunch in the next 48 hours and was considering ordering it if she did perform. But I didn't want to spend $9.95 if it's just "Intuition." Thanks. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Jun 2003 12:56:44 -0700 From: "Sandy" Subject: Re: [EDA] avg ticket prize just $ 31 no way yeah, I'm with michiel here, I don't know where you gather the statistics, and whether they are reliable (and I know that most of michiels shows were solo acoustic, which I think were higher prices), but Jewel tickets for me on the This Way tour ended up running me $200 Canadian for 2, which is about $150US... by far *the* most expensive concert tickets I've ever bought aside from Woodstock. The next in line, were only $100 Canadian for 2, HALF the price of Jewel... and that was for two large bands, the Beastie Boys & Rage Against the Machine (unfortunately they cancelled, then Rage broke up :( )so yeah, she doesn't in any way have the cheapest tickets around from my observations. ~ Sandy ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Jun 2003 12:56:44 -0400 From: FreckledAngel@aol.com Subject: [EDA] nedra stepping down from managing I think Nedra did a great job as manager, but it makes that after guiding Jewel's career into a good place she's now ready to step back and focus on other things. Amy ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Jun 2003 13:03:40 -0400 From: FreckledAngel@aol.com Subject: [EDA] am I the only list member who hasn't bought INTUITION yet? I have every other JEwel album, books, videos, paraphernalia, etc...but I haven't gotten intuition yet. I have looked around in Borders for REVEALING JEWEL and haven't seen it yet but even though I think the new sound is cool and have no problem with it, I am just not yet compelled to buy it (I'm also temporarily out of work and a "starving" musician so I am not making as many purchases as I used to). I've heard the clips and yes, it was catchy, but I'm a folk-rock person, and I've always hated pop and hated the eighties with a passion. Again, I'm not dissing Jewel for exploring new terrain and doing it well, but I just haven't been inspired to go out and get this pop album...may do it at some point...we'll see Also I have a dentist appoint when JEwel's doing her signing at FYE so I guess I"ll have clean teeth but no Jewel signature ... as for the Bryant Park thing in the evening I may pass on that as well...sounds great but actually MOnday nite is when I either go a very cool open mike at the Baggott Inn downtown or head to my Songwriter's group. ANd, I have to say I got my temporary Jewel fix from going to the Central Park concert AND the Early MOrning Show concert, both or which Jewel kicked booty at. It has been good for NYCers lately in terms of Jewel appearances, such that now we're getting spoiled ;-) Or at least I am... Amy :) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Jun 2003 15:02:53 EDT From: Dave0828@aol.com Subject: [EDA] average ticket price: $37.61 Alright - I looked it up myself just to confirm the figure for my own edification and I was wrong. But, it's not as though I was pulling numbers out of my a** - I simply mixed up the numbers for average ticket price and average attendance - which are pretty close and easy to mix up if you consider that I read the article months ago - at any rate: I incorrectly recalled the 31.00 number - instead, this was the average attendance (3,101). The average ticket price was $37.61 - still a far cry from many other major acts - also a far cry from what has been suggested to me in the response to my previous post. http://www.pollstaronline.com/sf-2002-yearendtop100.asp I'm not making this stuff up - it's taken straight from actual industry sources - see the url above for an online page of the article I'm referring to. When considering an average ticket price, please also consider the definition of average. Realize that at every show there were multiple price levels. $37.61 is an average of every ticket sold to a North American Jewel concert in 2002. Maybe a ticket to sit up front couldn't be had in the low-end range of what ticket prices would have been factored in to create an average ticket price of $37.61. However, you could get in the door to see the show for much less than you could get a ticket in the highest price range to sit up front. Take a couple of others on the list - Billy Joel & Elton John - average ticket price $107.88 - I paid $177.50 for my ticket (face value) - but I sat in the front floor section, there were many others in the upper level of the arena who paid considerably less- thus, the average ticket price of $37.61. Aerosmith - - $49.95 average ticket price. I paid $87.50 for my ticket - but I sat in the Orchestra level of the pavilion - there were many others behind me, including the lawn, who paid a lot less - bringing the average figure down to under $50. There are many other examples - but I'll try to refrain from being too long winded. The point that I am illustrating here is that we all remember paying prices much higher than the average price because many of us wouldn't sit far enough back at a Jewel concert to have $22.50 stamped on our ticket. But the original point still remains - of the 70 tours of last year that grossed more than Jewel's tour she had a lower average ticket price than 44 of them. About half of the ones that are cheaper tickets are rap and country - which have notoriously low ticket prices within the industry. She is very cognizant of her fans - she has always been very good to them. Jewel is in the same league with Tom Petty and Pearl Jam as far as ticket prices go. They could all charge a lot more and don't - out of consideration for their fans and their fan's bank accounts. She could have very easily charged more money for a lot of her tickets (when comparing her to comparable acts) and didn't. She could very easily say no to autograph requests and doesn't (how many artists have occasional impromptu signing sessions DURING their shows?). She could very easily restrict picture taking and recording at her shows and doesn't. She could very easily refuse when a fan runs up to her on the street and wants to take their picture with her - and doesn't. I've NEVER seen Jewel refuse a fan ANYTHING. Is her ticket price going to rise this tour above the last tour? Maybe - but was This Way's tour ticket higher than Spirit's? Yes it was, and didn't she have the same management (Leandra) for both tours? Yes again. There are a ton of factors that go into determining a ticket price, as well as any other decision in an artist's career. We're not privy to each of them. But still - Jewel is true to herself and her fans - she's not going to allow a manager to take her in directions that she doesn't want to go, just as Lester Mendez only helped Jewel do what she wanted to do on the new album. After all, isn't it a bit naive to think that Leandra knows as much about the ins and outs of the music industry as a seasoned manager? It's likely that he has a lot of good input - maybe even cost saving ideas - and that's why he's been hired. Of course that's just my opinion (except where I stated actual facts) - I could be wrong.
