Her dancing and movement looked as comfortable as it has looked so far. Not over the top, just really good and sexy! And her outfit was really cool. I have to say all this lip-syncing discussion is starting to irritate me. Not only would Jewel *not* lip-sync, because she has a strong enough voice not to have to... but it's completely obvious that she isn't lip-syncing in these performances. If she were, the vocals would be FLAWLESS.... and they would most likely exactly match the vocals on the album. The vocals, however, are NOT flawless. They're GOOD... but by no means flawless. Jewel goes off key occasionally, her voice during a lot of the higher parts is much weaker than it is on the album. The harmonies aren't perfect. There's a male tenor singing in the harmonies, which does NOT happen on the album. It's nothing major... she sounds good... it's just what you can expect from a live performance - - good, but not perfect. Steve. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Jun 2003 09:41:22 EDT From: Lseids@aol.com Subject: [EDA] That Dress I love that dress Jewel was wearing on the view! The lyric begs to be cast as the rationale for the former van dweller's entire album, awash as it is in suburban-dance-club beats (courtesy of Shakira producer Lester Mendez), ingratiating choruses, and alphanumeric titles (e.g., "2 Find U"). But unlike, say, Liz Phair, Jewel has no real roots to betray. Since 1995's intermittently charming pseudo-folk debut, Pieces of You, her discs have been notable mainly for teeth-grindingly didactic lyrics ("Only kindness matters") and the absence of a signature sound. Sellout move or not, 0304's unexpected dance-pop vibrancy makes it Jewel's best album-or, for detractors, her least unbearable. The perkiest tracks, like the life-is-a-highway anthem "Doin' Fine," are the best ones even when they leave the singer in danger of sounding like Stepford Jewel: "Life's a breeze for people like you and me," she chirps, possibly without irony. But Jewel still hasn't figured out what she wants to be ; the soul singer on the "Purple Rain"-like tune "Haunted" sounds like a different person from the Debbie Harry-style rapper on "U & Me = Love." In the end, she offers herself as a work in progress, singing "I am not yet born." To which we say, Hurry up. B- Mention #2 Jim Mullen's Hot Sheet (a top 10 countdown of the things the country is talking about this week) #2 Jewel: On her latest CD, she's turned from neo-folk to belly-baring party pop. But it seems she has one foot in both worlds-she still knits her own thongs. Actually, I guess there's 3 mentions. They also note that she came in #2 on the album charts. Happy Friday! Does anyone have their This Way review? Fabio ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Jun 2003 19:55:46 -0300 From: "Fabio (wnet)" Subject: [EDA] Amazon review Great review: Amazon.com Why pick on a girl for taking a chance? After experiencing flagging sales, Jewel has become proactive and given herself a cosmetic and artistic makeover. But 0304 isn't the winsome thrush's first leap into the unknown. Hiring Shakira producer Lester A. Mendez to give her solemn, folksy songs a pop sheen and some dance beats isn't as radical as starring as a Civil War widow in an Ang Lee film. Besides it's a lot more interesting to hear her squeeze her chaste, malleable soprano around an accordion solo in the futuristic namedropping fable "Intuition" or her voice a beat-driven condemnation of the George W. Bush regime on "America" to see her sashaying on the silver screen in those tight bodices and hoop skirts. Although she has changed the very structure and sound of her songs, Jewel's undeniable talent shines through. She still has a way with words and her voice is remains as pure as an Alaskan stream. --Jaan Uhelszki ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Jun 2003 18:57:10 -0400 From: Mike Connell Subject: Re: [EDA] 2 mentions of Jewel in EW Fabio wrote: >To be honest, I was expecting a really awful review from them and I am quite >pleased it wasn't that bad!! Gotta love them list archives! Good ol' Scott posted it way back when... Date: Sun, 18 Nov 2001 01:62:40 From: "Scott" Subject: [EDA] Ent. Weekly review From this week's EW.. They never like Jewel.. It's like a rule for the magazine.. I just don't think I've heard anything really positive about her from them.. Besides their ANWA review.. Which doesn't really cound because they dissed the book countless times in the following year.. lol.. So anyway: Jewel - This Way (Atlantic) On her third album, Jewel looks to Nashville. Things quickly go wrong. Working with producer Dann Huff, the music is Faith Hill-slick; "edgy" guitar licks make "Serve The Ego" and "This Way" into some of the cleanest, dullest songs about ache ever recorded. Jewel shows off pain in both a low scratch and a thundering howl, but country is about stories, and her lyrics--from the self-consciously quirky ("She lived beneath the disco discount store, with pictures of Randy Newman scattered all across the floor") to the nail-in-your-head obvious ("Wrong or right, be mine tonight, Harsh world be damned, we'll make a stand")--don't get the job done. A misstep. C- --Josh Tyrangiel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Jun 2003 20:13:11 -0300 From: "Fabio (wnet)" Subject: [EDA] Vote for Jewel LOL!!!! Jewel has 0%! Fabio ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Jun 2003 21:20:52 -0230 From: "Mark Austin" Subject: [EDA] Unedited trial Well, I'm liking Jewel Unedited so far. I know that there are contract things preventing from full clips of the songs, but I really wish some sort of deal or negotiation could be worked out to solve this! We are paying afterall. I thought before unedited we got clips it was because we weren't paying. That part bugs me. My second problem is that I wish that you could download the actual content, and not stream it. The site doesn't think of us here on slow connections (the fastest available where I live right now is 56k.) and before Unedited was launched at least we could download the videos and clips to our computer. I really hope that changes. There isn't really an address I can e-mail my comments or suggestions to, because it says customer service is for "techincal problems." Also, I can't get the videos to work in the Jewel's Corner section... I've tried the up to date browsers that the site suggested but I still can't get anything to come up when I click. Maybe I'll e-mail customer service about that at least. Its really great but I want some things fixed before I pay for this. Again, I know there are contract issues regarding clips instead of full versions, but it really puts a whole damper on it and makes me wonder why do we have to pay since most of the stuff there we got for free on the This Way version of the site, and even better because we could download it. Thats my two cents. If a membership is $39.00/year that is $3.25/month. On the other hand, the priority seating for concerts and Jewel/Fan Meet&Greets would make the price of admission worthwhile.
