Real Player keeps coming up but the tracks won't play. I think it could be because the songs are Windows Media Player, but I'm not sure how to disable Real One Player and use Windows Media Player instead. Can anyone help me out? I would really appreciate it!! ~Liz Philly Angel _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 with e-mail virus protection service: 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Jun 2003 19:00:21 EDT From: PENNY16161@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Reality Radio on Z100 For all of you in NY, Z100 (100.3) does something called "reality radio" where celebrities DJ for an hour and play whatever they want. Jewel debuted at #9 in Canada with 0304. This Way only debuted at #21 so this a HUGE improvement. I'm somewhat surprised, cause the single isn't doing as well over there. So that's two top 10 debuts and counting...... :) Steve. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Jun 2003 13:31:35 +1000 From: Barry Howarth Subject: [EDA] Later thoughts on 0304 Hi Angels, Well, I've listened to "0304" a few more times now and, while the style of music is not to my taste and I don't think it shows Jewel musically in the best light, I appreciate what might be called the ideological intention of the album. Jewel seems to be getting into a pattern: an eclectic album (POY) followed by what I would call an ideological album (S); then another eclectic album (TW) followed by another ideological album (0304 - you just can't abbreviate that, except maybe to 0 - zero). While "Spirit" was positive -- with "Innocence Maintained" as its standard-bearer (though "Under the Water" expresses the themes so much better musically and ideologically) -- now we have the same basic ideology expressed negatively, ironically, in "0304" -- with "America" as the standard-bearer this time. Jewel once said she and Marilyn Manson were two sides of the one coin: the same is true of "Spirit" and "0304" . "I wanna change it, but I wouldn't leave it if I could" sums up the strengths, and the weaknesses, of the album. While Jewel has said the album is a snapshot of pop culture 2003/2004, I think her target is much broader than that. There is a continuation of "The New Wild West" here (just as "Spirit" takes up aspects of "Amen"), but, as politics is a verboten topic on this list (and I fully understand why), I won't go into that, except to say that it is not only "fear of litigation" that is the "new censorship" but fear of being seen as not being patriotic that is the "new censorship, and the "old censorship". Jewel presents what she wants to change in current pop culture: her critique is expressed through irony -- a favourite device of hers that is fundamental to her wonderful sense of humour. In so much of this album, when she says something she means the opposite: "Woodie Guthrie's land can't feed mother" -- it is the opposite of Woodie Guthrie's land that can't feed mother. Jewel is making fun of a lot of of cultural and social icons here -- which some of her critics pick up on instinctively in their reviews: she is the enemy and must be attacked, otherwise their world is under threat, which it is, of course. This record in particular focuses on mindless hedonism and materialism -- "Doin' Fine" is an obvious example of this, but not the only one -- this theme runs through many of the songs. However, there's a danger in this, which is expressed in the second part of the quote from "America" I used earlier: "but I wouldn't leave it if I could". A second layer of irony kicks in -- as some others on the list have also picked up on: the album is, has become what it attacks. It is a bit like when Jewel has said she almost gave up because she doesn't like having to try to be homecoming queen -- having to do all those interviews and promos and photo shoots and have hit singles, while energetically trying to do just that. She is repulsed and attracted at the same time. The danger is that the attraction will win out. But she's a strong woman. Basta! Enough rambling. There's a lot more that could be said about the undercurrents of this album. I'm still not all that keen on the music -- as with "Break Me" on TW, the band spoils it somewhat because it tends to drown out Jewel -- "The circus tents are dead, but the sideshow is doing well ", so to speak . But there is certainly enough of Jewel still to be heard to make the album interesting and worth listening to again, and again. Take care, Barry Howarth ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V8 #270 ***************************
