It gets off to a good start with "Stand', certainly one of the best tracks, and then "Leave the Lights On". "Haunted " stands out from the rest of the album, but -- in a way representing the album as a whole -- does not measure up to "Nicotine Love" or "Damn the Daisies". Apart from "America", the rest of the album is pretty interchangeable, all sounding much the same -- that's probably the influence of Lester Mendez. While I do like the album -- it's Jewel, after all, and her lovely voice is there (though too often subordinated to the band) and a lot of her themes are there -- "0304" is, to my mind, her weakest album. The reason for this is, I think, that all the songs were written over a short space of time and specifically for this album in collaboration with others, mostly Lester Mendez. They give me the feeling they were written to order, not so much from the heart. Now, there are a lot of great touches to the lyrics and the wartime theme running through many of the songs is nicely done ("Your flesh, your skin, is the only flag there is to believe in"), but also signs of tiredness, lack of imagination -- the repetition of some phrases (in "Spirit" there was repetition, but repetition of themes). The collaboration with Mendez just lacks the variation and the quirkiness of Jewel's collaboration with Steve Poltz. There's not a really stand-out song here, as there were on the other albums (WWSYS, YWMFM, Morning Song, Amen; Hands, Enter from the East, Do You; New Wild West, A Long Slow Slide (on the Australian version), and Break Me should have been -- to name my favourites). Jewel has had her fun with this album. I just hope that with the next one she gets back to some more serious work. I had been listening to "Spirit" just before "0304' arrived in the mail and that may have affected my first impressions of "0304". So I may change my opinion after I have listened to it a few more times. Take care, Barry Howarth ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Jun 2003 19:52:10 +1000 From: Fredsteve Subject: [EDA] The Jewel lip-syncing issue Hey Guys Here's my take on this "lip-syncing" thing. Jewel is NOT lip-syncing the performances of Intuition. Joe mentioned that she rarely sings songs the same twice... whereas she has been in the chorus (although it's been notably different each time in the verses/bridge). Well the reason she's doing this is because she's singing the song with TWO backup singers. They are singing the harmonies in the chorus and the pre-chorus.. and if Jewel altered the phrasing for these lines the whole thing would sound completely crap because she'd be out of sync with the backup singers. They're the best backup singers Jewel has had so far in that they sound very in-tune and work with Jewel's voice quite well. They are not, however, Jewel's voice. And they don't sound like the record. The reason I know this is because in ONE of the performances of Intuition that Jewel has done, she has had some pre-recorded backing vocals in the chorus. That's the NBA performance. You can hear other "Jewel's" singing the harmonies of "in the right direction" there and it sounds totally different from the other performances. The rational explanation for this is that they used a backing for this performance, rather than playing it live. The only live part of the performance was Jewel's voice... and I think the backup singers were in there as well. Although they were bolstered by additional vocals. When producers put together a "single" release they put together a track that is basically a backing where the singer can just sing the lead vocal. That is probably what they used for this show... and it would've had backup vocals on it. Also - the vocals in the chorus during the live performances (apart from the NBA) just are not as smooth as on the record. Jewel's voice cracks more and they're rougher. The backup singers are good, but not THAT good. It just doesn't sound like the record. It sounds "live". The only occasion where it sounds like the record is "in the right direction" at the NBA performance... and you can really see the difference between using pre-recorded vocals and real backup singers in that moment. The other issue is the band. They did pretend to play the NBA performance. That's a given. However, other than that they've been playing the song almost completely live - which is utterly amazing to me, given how electronic it is. You can tell this cause the other live performances (apart from the NBA) have been somewhat different. The electric guitarist is putting more into those parts (particularly in the second verse). The keyboards during the bridge have been different. Even the drums are mostly live. One would think that they'd just use the electronic loop (and I do think they're using some of the more intricate loops in the background)... but no... the main "hand-clap" loop is being played by the drummer. You can see him hitting this little electronic drum down to his left during the verses, and then he switches to a real drum (whcih I think is also an electronic drum... it's a combo) for the choruses. They've even recreated the little electronic noises during the bridge that I can't describe (although in one of the remixes they're used as the basis for the whole thing... so you might be able to know what I'm talking about) by having the backup singers sing various "ooh" and "ahh" parts. I think they deserve a LOT of credit for putting the song across truly "live" but in a way that is true to the original recording. I know it's not a big deal at all... these are just TV performances. But I just think Jewel and the band should be given credit for how they're doing Intuition. They could just rely on mostly backings (I was definitely expecting that with the drums). But they're not. I'm actually really impressed by it. Steve ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Jun 2003 20:32:35 +1000 From: Fredsteve Subject: [EDA] Jewel comments on chart debut... Hey Guys Jewel had a brief comment about Metallica stealing her #1... : In an interview with The Associated Press, Jewel was nonchalant about her almost No. 1. "It's all out of my control," she said. She added that it's still the highest-debuting record she's ever had: "It's really unusual that you'll have a higher-debuting record than any other record in your career. Usually, 10 years into your career, it's going down." She's very right. She should be very proud! So should we! I'm sure you all know but the final figures were 144 000. She'll probably slip to around #5 next week cause Radiohead, Luther Vandross and George Strait will all debut well. It's been real busy around here the past few weeks, preparing for the launch of Jewel's brand new subscription site. We'd like to clarify a few things about the new "Jewel: Unedited" site, which we're real excited about and hope many of you will greatly enjoy. First, Jewel's regular website, which has always been cost-free, will continue to be provided to everyone and that won't be changing. Everyone will still have access to the calendar, weekly photos and the various content we've always provided you. The new "Jewel: Unedited" subscription site, which can be accessed through jeweljk.com contains all kinds of extra content for those of you who still crave more. We want everyone to make an educated decision before joining, and most of you can do that by either signing up for a free month trial as a download card benefit or simply trying it for a month, as it will be available as a monthly or yearly subscription. Much of the "Jewel: Unedited" content, as well as the idea itself, was in direct response to many of your wishes and suggestions over the past few years, as well as JeweLink subscriber suggestions earlier this year. We've taken many of your requests to heart and have created something that will provide you with more direct access to the content you've asked us for. However, as with any North American-based musicians, there are some areas that will benefit North American subscribers more than others, like meet & greet opportunities (for obvious reasons) and pre-sale tickets. We realize this is disappointing to our international friends, but we believe making as many people happy as we can is the right thing to do, even if it means some benefit more than others. It might be helpful to explain some of the realities of touring, so that everyone understands what we are capable of doing and why. Internationally, for instance, each country and each venue has totally different regulations and requirements in regard to touring and ticket sales. Its one of the things that makes international touring so complicated. As much as we'd love to offer all benefits to everyone everywhere, pre-sale ticketing with international venues on an individual basis is an administrative impossibility. North America has central ticket agencies that offer pre-sale ticket services, making that possible for many (but not all) venues here. Also, there are some legal restrictions that we are required to follow, one being that you must be 18 years of age to legally subscribe. Those between the ages of 13 and 17 can still enjoy the free introductory month, but must have a parent or legal guardian subscribe for them after that. Everyone should also take the time to read and understand the site use agreement posted on the site. We're trying to be as clear and upfront about these things as possible, so that each of you can make an educated decision on the merits of "Jewel: Unedited." It might not be for everyone, but we encourage you to check it out for yourself. Those who wish to see and listen to rare archival clips, read messages and unpublished writings from Jewel, have first access to pre-sale tickets, meet and greet opportunities, as well as a lot of other cool content, will certainly find plenty to enjoy. Have a look for yourself. We hope you enjoy it! I bought it on the way to school today and just didn't go to my lectures. Instead I sat and listened to it basically all day. I think it's gonna be fighting seriously with 0304 for time in my CD player. For all those people who liked Radiohead in their more "rock" days but aren't too fond of the post-modern electronic experimentations of the past couple of years (Kid A and Amnesiac)... you might find yourself liking this record. There is still some electronics going on, but it's been toned back MAJORLY. The emphasis is back on the melody and the real instruments and Thom Yorke's really intriguing lyrics. I personally really liked Kid A and Amnesiac, but I was dissapointed that he seemed to completely de-emphasise his lyrics. He didn't release them in printed form with the CDs and most of what he was saying was pretty incomprehensible on the albums. I guess they were intended as more musical ventures than lyrical ones. Anyway, to my delight and surprise the lyrics are printed in the booklet (Jewel should take a page out of Radiohead's book for creating simple but creative album liner notes BTW).... My favourite song right now is "A punchup at a wedding". I know that's a really weird title but that song just grooves... plus it's hilarious. It was really interesting cause I finished listening to the Radiohead record for about the 3rd time and then popped 0304 back in and skipped straight to Haunted. And I swear, production wise, that song really stands up well to Radiohead's amazing production. It really is very reminiscent of Ok Computer and Hail to the Thief. I was sort of expecting it to "pale" in comparison when I listened to it again.. but it really didn't. I was so impressed. I really hope that Jewel makes an album that sound like Haunted in it's entirity. I think it'd be amazing and really intiguing. She really pulled off that atmospheric, but still quite rockin' sound with that song. It's definitely my favourite on the album now. Guess this wasn't so NJC after all. Steve. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V8 #267 ***************************
