I remembered I had a MPG video of Jewel performing the National Anthem at the super bowl. I watched it a few times and I started to wonder if she was playbacking. I mean it was of course her one voice but the words and her mouth didn't ran simultaniously. Can someone tell me what's up with this. Did she really playback (which I can Hardly imagine, Jewel is the most talented live performer I know) or is the video just fucked up?<< Jewel did indeed lip-synch the anthem when she did it at the Super Bowl, but it was not her decision. The Super Bowl requires ALL performers to lip-synch the anthem (Even Whitney Houston in the 1990 game during the Gulf War). In Jewel's case she did the recording with the band on that Friday. The reason she was "way off" at the start of the song is because the network came back from a commercial break about 30 seconds too soon, and the person that cued Jewel was off on the cue in the confusion due to the network coming back early. This info was related to us by Jewel's management in the week after her performance. After being on the News list for so long, I've finally signed up for THE EDA list, so I thought I'd introduce myself. I've read the do's and don't's on the (dated) website, but if I do anything that's not kosher please let me know! My name is Dan Cole, I'm 23, and I currently live just outside Washington, DC. My first peak experience with Jewel was last summer on the This Way tour. Prior to that, I'd know of Jewel ("Isn't she that artsy chick who sounds like Kermit the Frog when she sings "Who Will Save Your Soul"?), but seeing her in concert... WOW. She could start her own religion were she so inclined. I was introduced to her by my girlfriend of two and a half years, Jordana (another EDA), who at that particular concert was fortunate enough to be brought up on stage to help Jewel sing 1,000 Miles Away. Since that fateful day a year ago, I've seen her in concert three times and have soaked up everything I can about her. I'm sure it was all the usual stuff that drew me to Jewel. Her vocal range that defies what humans should biologically be capable of, her poetic, deep lyrics (especially in The Cold Song), her dominating stage presence, etc. She's magnetic. Her voice feels like it could shake the world. Etc. I'm sure there's nothing I could say that hasn't already been said; I'm just another sheep in the flock. Of course, when I see her, I don't feel like a sheep. That's part of her talent as a performer - she can make everyone in the audience feel like she's singing just to them. I'll just ring in on a few debates. Yes, I prefer it just being her and her guitar, but I do love her new stuff as well. When someone sets out to accomplish a goal, and they succeed, I can't help but admire it. I have so much fun listening to this album, and just in time for summer, too. So many artists either stagnate or else they go through phases (look at all the Madonnas) that feel like so many different variations of Barbie (kids, now you can get new Goth Madonna! Sexy Madonna playset sold separely). Jewel hasn't stagnated or abruptly gone through so many marketable phases, she has EVOLVED in a way few artists do. I for one can't wait to see where her passion for infinite exploration will take her next. Someone mentioned how Beyonce needs to give her dancing lessons. Jewel is not a professional dancer, nor does she pretend to be. If you want dancing, I recommend the manufactured stylings of Britney Spears. The way Jewel dances is the way a friend hanging out in your apartment and just fooling around, having fun would dance. It's part of the whole energy she brings to the stage that puts crowds in the palm of her hand. She has fun, she loves what she's doing, and you can really see that in the way she dances. Lip-synching at the Superbowl makes sense. You have millions and millions of people watching, millions of things going on, millions of dollars on the line, and millions of things that could go wrong. The last thing a Superbowl producer wants is for Jewel to eat too much cheddar popcorn before the show and have to break out the water and Riccola to clear up her throat. Of course, I love when that happens - I wouldn't be surprised if she did it on purpose just to increase the level of intimacy between herself and the audience. Yay for Jewel! Time to wrap it up for now... See you around! - -Dan ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Jun 2003 13:34:06 -0300 From: "Fabio (wnet)" Subject: Re: [EDA] An Introduction >> Someone mentioned how Beyonce needs to give her dancing lessons. From an evolutionary standpoint, Jewel's best hope for survival is to build up sufficient resources, i.e. money. So people naturally assume that Jewel (a human) would do what is in the best interests for her to continue living and breeding. "So of COURSE she's being sexy because she sold out, it's survival of the fittest!" Most of us of course wouldn't CONSCIOUSLY think that, but the primitive, subconscious parts of us are. Another reason is simply as a means of protest and a confusion over why they like Jewel. People fell in love with Jewel, a particular Jewel, and because she is not behaving in the manner to which the are used, they lash out at her; they feel she should go back to the way she was "before." It's like dating someone for a long time, and you realize that, after a few years, they're not the same person you first fell in love with. Everyone has either had this happen to them, or else knows someone it's happened to. But the thing is, people change. It could be the person you're dating hangs out with a new crowd, or lost a close friend, or became a vegetarian. Those are all things that change people. Jewel went from "living in a van" to extraordinary success. You'd expect that to bring about a MAJOR change. The question is whether you love the core soul of a person, or something more external. You can be a fan of Jewel's music (which is so vastly different), or a fan of Jewel. So I can understand why people might find it hard to accept that Jewel might WANT to dress sexy. Personally, I think she's just having a blast doing what she's doing, and I think that's great. I could be wrong, she could be a total sell-out, but she's still Jewel, and she will always rock, no matter how life changes her. - -Dan ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Jun 2003 15:15:34 -0400 From: "Scott" Subject: [EDA] Yes U Can Ok, I'm going to ahve to join the masses and say that this song needs to be a single.. So, I got the latest Entertainment Weekly expecting a review of 0304. They got all the other June 3 releases (Train, Sugar, Ray, etc.) in the last issue, so I thought they were just saving space for a feature review. They don't review her at all! And then Rolling Stone. People sent in the review last week. It's a crappy review that is positive but seems like an afterthought, calling 0304 a Madonna 'American Life' wannabe. What crap. It's great stuff! The following quote is from our favorite sound archivist / liasion, Alan: "If, for criteria, you're considering just the songs that Jewel has written, either by herself or in collaboration, that are finished songs that she performed, it's like in that 400 range. But like, as an archive manager, I'm interested in everything that she's done and any song that she's performed. Even if it's a cover song. And there were many songs from the early days, like when touring with her dad and things like that. If you're including all of that, there's probably twice as many." Yikes. More like swallowed and gulped down. Britney Spears' sound was not shoved down anyone's throat. She's sold 2 diamond albums, obviously somebody's listening. Also, so what if she fixes her teeth? What if she does it because she wants to? Feelings change. I never used to like the color of my hair but now I do. Similairly, I always loved my hands and smile, but now, not so much. Feelings change. Of course, Jewel's don't change, so long as she emails us first and asks us if her feelings can change. And then asks our permission to dress differently.
