There are some decent songs on there, but nothing with the same impact that she's had with some of her others. I have a feeling this will have some decent initial sales, but in the long term will peter out like a lot of artists lately. The only songs I feel with much potential are Intuition (of course), Leave the Lights On, Haunted and one other I can't think of right away. She definitely achieved the 80's pop feel she was going for, but lately, there's been a backlash in the industry on pop artists that is emerging, so the timing might be bad on that sound. As for Metallica outselling Jewel - there's a pretty good chance it will, but I'm thinking the sales won't be as high for Metallica as they think. The new song stinks - bad - and even the feedback on the local radio stations here (Dallas, TX area) is fair at best. Just about everyone I've talked to at the local music clubs down here that we play have told me they thought it either totally sucked or was average at best. I haven't found anyone yet who was really into it. The ones that did hear the album said it was alright and there's some songs on there that were a little better than the single out now, but it's also a really weak album. It seems every third year of a decade that the music scene does a transition and the "sound of the decade" is most obvious around the end of the year. I guess a lot of artists are in this transition period and are kind of lost as to where to go with it right now. Who knows - just some observations. But - through much consideration I decided that Jewel was playing 40 minutes from my house - I'm kind of contractually obligated to go. Besides I know a weak ticket when I see it - - and HOT 99.5 obviously didn't succeed in making this a desirable event to attend - it wasn't exactly sold out, in fact they didn't even sell the lawn - making sure that everyone that did attend would have a pavilion ticket so that the artists wouldn't have to look at a bunch of empty seats and a smattering of people on the lawn. They were plugging a 2 for 1 ticket promotion for almost a month and all day today they tried to sell them at $10 each. But - I still wasn't that inspired to get down there to see Jewel do a 4 or 5 song set with a bunch of pop acts drawing a very "non-jewel" crowd. But, through various phone calls some of us managed to confirm that she would be getting the longest set of the night at about 45 minutes - however she wasn't closing the show. Well - we can get 8 - 10 songs into 45 minutes and 45 minutes of Jewel was better than any other entertainment option that I had open to me - so at the last minute we decided to get up there and check it out. We got third row tickets (see - scalpers aren't always a bad thing) on the way in - so hey Jewel's going to be very near me - pretty good Saturday night - but could somebody please explain to me why she is going on before Wayne Wonder and Blu Cantrell?? Doesn't she deserve the headlining spot? I gotta say - I suspect that this was a calculated move on her (or J-team's) part. I think that she didn't want to see people leave and have only her crowd stay to see her play (it was barely over a half sold house to start with). I think that she wanted to see if she was up to the challenge of winning over a house full of people that weren't all there for her, all the while winning over some new fans and selling some more records. She was up to it in a big way!!!! After stumbling a bit and coughing and stammering her way through a couple of lines (alright a verse) of Standing Still - she rolled with it and adapted to the lyrics to fit her troubles and proceeded to have an outstanding set!! After getting a throat lozenge to aid her through her troubles with having had too much pre-show popcorn (Bad Diva!!) she proceeded to bring everyone back to their seats and get the entire crowd into her set. There was hardly a soul there that would have cared if Wayne Wonder or Blu Cantrell got to sing a note - but, many of those people would have left before Jewel ever came out had she headlined. She had them in the palm of her hand by the time Stuart played the intro to Love Me Just Leave Me Alone you knew that she could have kept on going and the crowd would have lapped it all up. It was a very nice 50 minute set - for what it's worth I was several Jewel shows removed from getting goosebumps during a performance - but not after tonight. You go Jewel - great job!!! (anyone in management who decided that she should have an earlier spot - very nice decision) Anyone who doesn't know how the tour is going to be with the new material needn't worry. Jewel live will always equal an 11 on a 10 scale. The band is even tighter with the This Way tour under their belts. This was very nice - getting to see her turn some of the people who couldn't care less and get that non-packed house sounding like a packed house - people were even cheering for an encore and many were bummed when it didn't happen. Like always - I can't wait to see what comes next!! Here's hoping that the summer can pass quicker and usual because I can't wait for the fall tour!!! Not shocked. Just dismayed. Bored. This is a great POP album for a POP singer. I want to hear a Great rock and roll album for a great songwriter as she once WAS. This CD is NOT it. its POP, Its syrupy. It's juvenile. It's anything but reaching my soul. Dont send me hate mail...I wont respond anymore. Im SAD that she has chosen the EASY way to earn a living....for someone like Jewel--with her brain---she can whip out "POP" songs without much mental activity, where a song like AMEN comes from your SOUl...".Intuition" comes from your desire to expand your audience--hence an act of EGO and $$$ and business. Not ART. I read she was unhappy she only sold ONE million copies of THIS WAY....I remember when she was VERY excited to sell ONE million of Pieces of You.....the times have indeed changed. Please dont tell me "what about this song": on this CD, or "that song". I HEARD the whole CD. its POP pablum. The lyrics are background to the Musak and dance sounds. And really unimportant to the SALES of the CD. Nobody runs out to buy a CD based on POP lyrics. Only its danceable or upbeat sounds. Or the artists IMAGE. So the transformation is nearty complete--prodigy folk.rock artist right out of Bob Dylans time---is now a DIVA...well "Good for Her". I want my 17.00 back for this soul-less entity of...nothingnmess with a pretty PINK cover. Give me the B&W cover of THIS WAY. This CD is what it is... Yes I am living in the past......I WAIT...for YESTERDAY. There's not one song on there that I really like. Of course, I didn't really like Intuition when it first came out so maybe it'll grow on me... And, I'm mad at myself too because I saw it at the store and couldn't wait for my Amazon.com copy to get here. So, I bought 2 CD's and I don't like it. I guess I'll send the other one to my mom... But my take on the songs is that they aren't really a far cry from her old stuff. It's just that they are musically soulless. It doesn't sound like there are any real instruments on there. And, I don't think she sings "normally" in any of them. She tries to sound all sweety-pie or something... I don't know. I really liked the direction This Way was going. Rockier on some songs. I don't think this direction would have been bad if she had sung with her real voice and made it sound musically better by using real instruments... It just sounds really fake to me. I'm probably going to get slammed for this e-mail since everyone hated the idea of the CD before it came out and miraculously loved it after the release. Oh well... I'm looking forward to the next "new Jewel". Maybe that will be something I like again... I could really use some input! Hello jewel fans! I haven't posted in a while. First I would like to say how much I'm in love with jewel's new cd!!! It's A MAZING!!!!!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!! :-D Secondly, I need some help. I'm writing a paper for sociology on called "Entertainment Culture project" I have to chose a tv show, a band/solo artist and a movie, and explain how each fit into the existing laws of the time period, and also explain how each serves to socialize and element of American Society. And of course I'm using jewel for the band/solo artist part of my paper... and I was hoping someone could help me by giving their opinions of the subject. Thank you so much! |Diana| (the writing angel) ______________________ "The raven himself is hoarse That croaks the fatal entrance of Duncan Under my battlements. Hey Guys Well, it was no fluke. Jewel dropped only one spot from #7 to #8 on the Australian singles sales chart this week! Go Jewel! It's amazing to see her have another top 10 hit single here, after Standing Still didn't make the Top 30. Hopefully she'll keep it up! The album comes out.in 2 weeks here. Her transformation into a dance diva is still anchored by her strong songwriting and that powerhouse Yukon voice. Listen to the album now! ...Yukon? I'm in no way slamming you, but some people need to be more open minded. I'm not usually into all this dance PHAT beats stuff, but half of this CD is pretty awesome. I really like the songs that are newer, but some of the songs sound too much like Spirit, which is my least favorite album. 0304 accomplishes exactly what Jewel wanted by making the album - for people to listen to it and feel happier. Another thing - all sweety pie? Have you heard any of Pieces of You? > I'm probably going to get slammed for this e-mail > since everyone hated the idea of the CD before it came > out and miraculously loved it after the release. Just to clarify - I'm not one of those people, and I'm not slamming you at all.:) Just a discussion. I actually kept an open mind the entire time from when we found out about the CD to when it came out. Didn't freak out and say "SHE'Z SELLIN OUT?!" :( M > I'm kind of disappointed.
