You all must be distracted by the thong sticking out of her pants on the cover. ;-) GIRL GONE WILD The bad news is that Jewel, the horse-riding poetess-folkie, has disappeared. The good news is that she has been replaced by Jewel, the sexed-up pop diva, whose interests include cleavage, sweating and "being served." . . . By William Shaw Photography by Judson Baker Jewel Kilcher makes a lousy rock star. For the last few months, she has been living in Los Angeles. She says it's the longest she can remember being in one place. (So what was the last L.A. party you went to, Jewel?) She looks blank. "Sure. I went to a party. Not to long ago. . . ." She struggles to remember whose. (And what's your favorite place in this great city?) Again, she looks sheepish. "I haven't been out very much," she says. "I work morning till night. I'm not a real hanger-outer." As rock stars go, she's a dead loss. Turns out she reads poetry. Even writes it. And instead of publicly deriding the way her parents raised her, she praises them at every opportunity. Her mother manages her career, for Pete's sake. Worst of all, she's brainy. * * * * * For several months now, Jewel has been staying at a retro-chic hotel on Sunset Boulevard, completing her fifth album. We meet there at midday. She apologizes for being tired. (Late nights?) "Yeah. And all the crack I'm taking," she deadpans. We all may have our preconceptions about who the real Jewel Kilcher is, but anyone who still has her down as a long-haired, sandal-wearing, wholesome, gently introspective folk singer may be confused by what Jewel has done now. She used to write the kind of records you played as the part was winding down. However, her new album, 0304, surprisingly, is the kind of record you play when the party hits full swing. If her previous work came across as earnestly poetic missives from America's lost frontier, these are sly, deliberately sexy modern songs about metropolitan life. Her acoustic guitar has gone AWOL. Instead, there are BEATS. Being Jewel, she has an intellectual rationale for the change of pace. She explains it as she leads the way to the hotel's restaurant. "I started this album in November. I knew we were headed to war. I really, really felt I shouldn't write a pensive record," she says. She thought back to the big-band dance music of the 1940s. "The music that has always done well during wartime has always been music that makes you want to escape." - -- Scott http://scott.rocket-fish.org/ http://syd.rocket-fish.org/ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Jun 2003 03:51:03 -0400 From: "Scott" Subject: [EDA] BLENDER article . . . oops Well, I messed that one up. I am not here to bitch and bore endlessly, but what an absolute bastard of a thing. I was soooo looking forward to it :o( Don't get me wrong but it sucks that non US & Canadian EDAs miss out yet again. I understand the reasoning behind it and the fact that there are other things bonus (for that kinda money though to me it's not worth it for the missing out of meet&greet and pre sale options). Jewel was the #1 selling album on Tuesday and Wednesday. But Metallica's album was released on Thursday. They will sell more copies thursday-sunday than jewel will tuesday-sunday. Their album is hugely anticipated. So Jewel WILL have a career-high debut - but it'll be #2, not #1. I voted for "Yes You Can" as the next single - it reminds me a little of Pat Benetar and while it's not my favorite Jewel song - I think it has that big band feel she was going for on this album and it will have mass appeal and could be a fun, vibrant video. Don't know why everyone is claiming this cd is such a stretch from her other stuff - please, it's completely Jewel to me with just some extra beats and a few experiments. I think the CD is fabulous. My favorite song on it is 2 Find U - it's powerful. And Stand, which I think is lyrically reminiscent of WWSYS. Anyway, basically I think the only major difference in Jewel is her image - I was in the audience at Jay Leno and couldn't believe what she came out wearing, but don't get me wrong, she looked beautiful and can totally pull it off. Plus, she sounded incredible. Of course. Note to Mr. BB: Can you give us an update on the stats of how the CD is doing after its first week of being released? I'm on the edge of my seat to know how many she is selling and what everyone is saying about it. Also, I apologize if anyone has already done this as I was out of town for two weeks and I am behind on JewelLink emails. Thanks. (Just in case you picture this wrong, Amy was 40 yards away asleep in her tent at the time) After that, maybe the time Tom Proven wore some footwear. After that, Rob pretending he was on Beekmans' World and trying to assemble that cardboard cuckoo clock or whatever it was for three days. We almost put the lighter fluid to it... Also, yeah, the Tibetan Monastery was quite an experience. None of them boogied like the monks did in Karate Kid III, but it was certainly worth the trip up the mountain (and I didn't even go into the actual Temple) Also, the extreme fizzle that the "You simply cannot believe the sunsets at the reservoir" turned out to be. It was a major bust sunset-wise, but we had fun at a previously unvisited venue. Armani trenchcoat adorned Erica's head-first slides and dives on the rock, no, boulder-infested wiffle-ball field. Laying in the middle of the 2-lane highway late in the evening as it was the only open-enough space to get a really great look at the stars above. The cool nights in the clean air of the Catskill Mountains present some VERY amazing crystal clear views of the universe above us. A rarity for the city dwelling north-easterners. Did I mention Dennis showing us Amy's underwear in the bathroom for a buck? And one of the best moments, when an EDA posted in the days AFTER the weekend event how he loved it....meeting everyone....partaking in all we did...fondly recalling many of them, and it turned out he never even attended! (NONE of us could remember this guy). Turns out he just read all our posts, and talked of the same events with just enough changes to make it read like he was actually there. It was a heck of a "list-prank". I'm still catching up with past digests, as for now I can only access my e-mail on the weekends. I will write more about 0304 when I get through all the digests! I just wanted to say that today I have been listening to WPLJ in New York (the station that sponsored IntuitionFest May 10th) and I heard Jewel 3 times in a few hours: Standing Still, Intuition, and Hands (in that order). It's great that the release of 0304 has boosted her radio play of past singles. Also, I turned off the radio for an hour to listen to 0304 (during which someone asked me if Yes You Can was No Doubt), so maybe WPLJ played YWMFM, WWSYS or Foolish Games in that hour. If so, that means Jewel was on almost once an hour! Hope you are all doing well. Enjoy the rest of the weekend. ~Patricia :-) "Officer, I saw the man who hit me and his name was Johnny Waker" -Paul Bettany as Charles Herman in A Beautiful Mind "If I could have any job in the world I'd be a professional Cinderella" -Angelina Jolie as Lisa Rowe in Girl, Interrupted Free online calendar with sync to Outlook(TM). ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V8 #250 ***************************
