Umm, I've been trying to win all day. I just hope that everyone who goes likes Jewel .. it would suck if the winners and their guests just want to go to meet a celebrity. Ack! Why oh why can't I win? Each winner gets 4 tickets to the event. There's a winner every hour, so that's about 9 winners a day, let's say 10 to be even. So, there will be about 100 people there. That's manageable. So .. if any EDA in LA happens to win, you should invite EDAs (*hint* *hint* *nudge* *nudge*). Has any So Cal EDAs been trying to win as well? I know if I should win, I would want to go with EDAs, because only EDAs can appreciate bowling with Jewel. Hehe ... or at least have a blast meeting Jewel. She says two really interesting things on the interview: 1. That for her, trying to write smart pop music is a real "turn on". In that you can write an introspective singer-songwriter song that's smart really easily, and you can write a really bad meaningless pop song really easily, but trying to write a pop song that's also smart is really hard. And that's what she's trying to do on this record - not be too pensive, but make pop music smart. I love that! I love pop music, but I also love Jewel's lyrics and ideas.... so to combine them both is great. That must be why I love 0304 so much! 2. She says she's never had to compromise her music in her career for business, and that Atlantic Records didn't even come in and hear this album before she turned it in. I like that a lot. Steve. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 01 Jun 2003 12:56:47 +1000 From: Stephen Hallowes Subject: [EDA] 0304 - First Thoughts First off, I have to say - I love this album. It's my favourite Jewel album so far. I read Mike Gray's post and while I can understand everything he's saying, I couldn't disagree more. Particularly with regard to the lyrics - I think particularly compared to the last couple of Jewel albums (Spirit and This Way), this record is lyrically far superior. But hey, that's just me. In terms of the music I think people's opinion on this album is going to hinge greatly on whether or not they like the style of production she's chosen to adopt. I personally love it. I mean, don't get me wrong - I love the acoustic Jewel. Simplicity is great. But I also love the intricacy of this record. I *love* all the beeps and buzzes and listening for that stuff. And I think a lot of it is very inventive of this album. The fact is, she's going for a certain sound here. You can call it "ruining" the songs by adding "unnecessary production etc".... but she's made a certain creative decision and she's run with it.... and if it's your thing you'll love it, and if it's not you'll hate it. But I think she deserves a certain amount of credit for pulling it off, even if it do hate it. I think we're all gonna have to try to be respectful of each other's opinions here. Cause this record is going to divide the list majorly I think... and all it really is is a basic difference in musical taste. There's no right or wrong here. Ok. I'm gonna go track by track cause I like doing that: Stand- Lyrically, I love this song. I think it's one of her best lyrical compositions in years, and I don't find it trite at all. I like the line "it's a shame there's no one to blame" cause it separates Jewel from sounding like some desperate wannabe social activist looking for some corporation to blame for the ills of the world. I also think the production is very inventive and sets the tone of the record. (A) Run 2 U- Jewel says this is combining a folk lyric/melody with a dance beat. Well, this only starts to really work in the second verse. The lyrics to the first verse are too generic to sound authentically "folk", but the lyrics in the second verse are beautiful. I can picture this song acoustically, and I think a lot of people here will wish it was... but I like what she's done. Glad the whole record doesn't sound like this though. (B) Intuition- We all know how I feel about this song. It actually sounds a little out of place in the context of the whole album... but I still like it. I knew it'd be the poppiest thing on here and it is. (B) Leave the Lights On- This is where it *really* starts getting good for me. Jewel's phrasing in this song is perfect, and the production also starts getting really interesting. This song really reminds me of Portishead's "Glorybox". It's got that jazz-feel. The drums are fantastic, particularly in the chorus. (A+) 2 Find U- A good song. Not too much to say about it. It's solid, but nothing to really rave about. (B) Fragile Heart- This one I *love*. Her singing her so self-aware and innocent that it becomes this unabashedly sweet song... and the whistling solo is perfect. I also love the drums on this. They capture that bluesy sound she was going for but didn't quite make on "Everybody Needs Someone Sometimes" (A+) Doin' Fine - Jewel has said this song can be seen as very glib and ironic. I guess I can see that in the chorus ("let's breath stardust into our lungs" lol). At this point on the album the production starts to become more and more reminiscent of William Orbit (he produced Madonna's Ray of Lay). It's that element that works for me on this song. (A) 2 Become 1- I hate the title still. But I like the song. This song reminds me of This Way (the song), but it's a hell of a lot better lyrically. A good example of this album being lyrically superior to TW and Spirit. Not that there weren't good lyrics on those records.... but This Way (the song) was an absolute clunker lyrically, and in this song she manages to convey a similar idea in a much more mature way. (B) Haunted- The best (or 2nd best) song on the record. This song is incredibly layered, musically. This song, lyrically, reminds me of the circa-96 Jewel (Nicotine Love etc), mixed with production that recalls Radiohead's Ok Computer. The drums have this really washed out sound that's fantastic... gives it this real rock vibe. I'd love to see Jewel do an entire record like this. (A++) PS- Lester Mendez did co-write this. He co-wrote everything except Sweet Temptation, Yes U can (Jewel and Rick Nowels), Fragile Heart (Jewel and Anthony Bell) and 2 Become 1 (Jewel and Guy Chambers). Sweet Temptation- The verses remind me a little of I Won't Walk Away. I can here the Cure in this. It sorta has that 80's Britpop vibe. I really like the harmonies in the verses, and her voice in general. It's a good song. The second verse is particularly strong - her phrasing/rhyming is really good. (A) Yes U Can- My 2nd or 3rd favourite song on the album. I really love the combination of William Orbit-style beeps and buzzes with a heavy electric guitar. I think it works like a dream. I also think the lyrics on this song have shades of irony to them - but they're also fun - - they work on two levels (like Intuition). And I love the references to old songs in the 2nd verse. The drum production on this song is fantastic. It gets really frantic and frenzied toward the end. (A+) U&ME=LOVE- This one's a grower. Once I got over the image of Holly Valance (Australia's Britney Spears) singing it! I don't think she could pull off this song, it's too quirky for her. This is a cute song. I love the intro with the birds. (B) America- Tied for my favourite song on the album (with Haunted). I found out that you can get away with one swearword and still be carried in Walmart without an explicit lyrics sticker. So, there was no business reason for her to cut the f-word. So, my original theory, which was she took it out on purpose as a dig to censorship, looks all the more likely. If that is the case, I think it's very clever. Again, the combo of William Orbit beeps and buzzes with a heavy rock guitar is very effective. And I love the "breakdown" at the end. Lyrically, this is also a great song. Oh, and *this* is the song where I really hear The Cure (in the verses). Oh well. (A++) Becoming- A great song. I was afraid of cheese-fest 2003 with this song, but I think the whole idea she's presenting here is very mature. The idea of maturity being "witnessing your own becoming". I think that's a great concept. I also think the string arrangement is nice. (A+) Overal rating: A (I got this by calling every B a 7/10, every A and 8/10, every A+ a 9/10 and every A++ a 10/10 and then averaging it - to 8.2/10) Overall- This album, to me, sounds like an upbeat "Ray of Light" (Madonna, produced by William Orbit). Ray of Light being the album, not the song. Ray of Light had a similar production value but was more mellow. This album is very danceable. I think that description more or less dictates whether or not you'll like it or not. If you like that heavily electronic, layered, detailed production... then chances are you'll like this record. I think it still sounds like Jewel though. There are organic elements in every song that ground it.... and I think the fact that Jewel has taken this long to reach this point (ie - making a really produced record) means that it still sounds authentically *her*. This album isn't some slick producer's work - it's Jewel's work and it really sounds like her. It's also very distinctively Jewel in terms of songwriting and lyrics. I really think this album is Jewel's best album lyrically. Pieces of You had *some* great lyrics on it... but some laughable too. This album cuts the pretentious crap, lyrically, and presents what I see as being a very well-drawn portrait of American pop culture right now. Bottom line, Jewel wanted to make a groove-based dance album that's fun, sexy and smart. And hell, she's done that. Every song grooves, mainly because of the drum production. In most songs the drums are right up front in the mix and that creates this real head-bopping feel. I mean this album really does make me want to dance, and I *don't* dance. This is her most fully realised album, in that there is not a single skippable track, and they all work towards achieving her goal. I think it works like a dream. It's exactly what I pictured when I heard she was doing an electronic album. And I'm quite giddy at present! Thankyou for reading, if you got this far. Hey guys! Just a beforehand note: THIS IS LONG. But I hope you read it all! - ---- So, I planned on saving listening until the album came in the mail, but I couldn't help myself. First of all, it takes a couple listens with this album, because my mind, body, and spirit is programmed to reject heavy dance/pop. I loosened myself up for it, accepting the genre for this album, and here goes. Stand - A pop version of WWSYS. Of course, it will never rank up as high or carry the legacy that WWSYS has, it is still a good song. It would be best live I'm guessing, with all the pop/dance-ness toned down by the band. Run 2 U - I actually like this song. From the clip, I assumed it would be the most dance song on the album, but its not. Its sounds kinda acoustic and toned down with some dance beats during the verses and full pop/dance almost during the chorus. Its not that bad though! Definately not a Kylie Minogue-esque song, who someone mentioned. Intuition - Oh the irony. Good song, even if its heavily produced. Leave The Lights On - Very cool. Groovin'. The first listen I didn't like the part where she actually sang "leave the lights on" but after I got into it and realized it adds to the groove. 2 Find U - I liked it. Its a good song, and not too far of a departure of regular Jewel. The voice seems altered in a strange way, but its all part of the direction the album is taking here. Fragile Heart - Cute song! It has a very similar line from the orignal Fragile Heart song in the chorus. "Warning, careful; fragile heart." The whistling really made me laugh. Jewel even whistles beatifully. You could swear she was holding a little bird to the mic. It was very cute. Doin' Fine - Such a naive sounding song. I feel sad for the people in it. But I guess it sounds catchy, and nice to just feel carefree and good about. Didn't Jewel herself say in an interview that this song actually made her feel sad as well? Anyways, from the first 45 seconds I got from the clip, I was expecting it to be completely horrible. Guess I was wrong. 2 Become 1 - I love this song. Again, not a huge departure for Jewel, and I love it. One of my favorites off the album, definately. Haunted - AMAZING. AMAZING. AMAZING. It is truely dark, intense, incredibly vocally driven, and surpasses 99% of all other Jewel songs. And damnit this song is rocking. It's fair to say it ranks up with Who Will Save Your Soul. It makes me stop breathing at points. Its undescribable, it really is. I think this song DEFINATELY needs to be released as a single. I truely believe it will become a hit. What an awesome song. If it did become a single, and Jewel never got a grammy nomination for it, I would be furious, and she would be completely ripped off more than she ever has been before. Its such an awesome song, really. Sweet Temptation - One cool song. One of my favorites on the album. Its rockish, poppish, and sparkling. "Falling into" is the often used phrase of this album. At first I thought the syncing in the chorus was overdone by the clip from the website. But I changed my mind. Its a very awesome song. Good vocal performance, catchy, sexy, and just damn cool. Yes U Can - Its a good, catchy song, goes with the albums direction as well. Like a lot of the album, this song has damn cool sounding verses, but does almost a 180 on the choruses. But they're not half bad. Does this remind you guys of the Destiny's Child "Jumpin?" I think thats what it was called. It seems to be about a club, and has the words "bumpin" and "jumpin" in the chorus. U + Me = Love - My least favorite track. I loved the verses so much, but I probably will skip this one. The chorus just ruined it for me. I think style really does take over substance in this one. The chorus is just "oo la la la" in it. It reminds me of a all girl band like Dream or something. Remember those girls? Oh well. America - Cool song. Not the kind of "rockin'" I was expecting. The chorus kind of reminds me of a girl punk-pop band. Its cool though. It will appeal to the mainstream audience. I don't know if "Fucking" will be censored on the actual album or not? Maybe it was just censored on AOL first listen, where all ages are tuning in. Oh well, either way, its not that big of a deal, Jewel does have a lot of really really young fans she probably took into consideration. Don't forget that. Even though she covered abortion in This Way, this is more of a technical censorship because "fuck" is just a flat out swear word. I'll just be upset because damnit I would feel cool listening to Jewel say fuck! ;D Becoming - A nice, soothing pop ending to the album. I like it. Not a huge Jewel departure either. She was always a little pop. All in all, 0304 is a good album. One bad track in my opinion, and thats just due to the chorus. Beware, you guys who feel that Jewel should be all acoustic and sophisticated and serious. This album is fun, playful, and contains one song which ranks up with the likes of Who Will Save Your Soul. That song alone is worth the album. This album is not the best Jewel album yet. I wasn't expecting each cd to be better than the next, because many will be created and every one of them will be different from the other. Its just not possible. It is, however, a smart, sexy, upbeat, and fun album where Jewel is proving that she really can conquer any genre, and rule over whatever chart she wants. Its like I hear people saying that Jewel really isn't that popular anymore; I even heard someone call her washed up (but since is having a record sell over a million copies washed up?!). This is her saying, "No, I'm not washed up. I'm just doing whatever I want, and right now I feel like being mainstream." (Although it's a "musical peanut butter and pickle sandwich," its still mainstream.) But at the same time, she maintains artistic integrity. This album is not trying to spit out hits, but it is trying to be mainstream, and suceeding. Its hard to explain, but I think thats what this album is doing. Just Jewel proving herself and still doing what she wants. That shows all you people who said shes washed up! >;D Jewel has many facets, and don't worry, I'll say this over and over again, Jewel has not left her "roots." This is just another exploration, and shes proving herself over and over, and at the same time saving her career in a certain extent by returning to the mainstream and going with the times. This album may end up being responsible for Jewel continuing to make big, mainstream albums, and acoustic ones as well, for a very long time, which some of you want more than anything. I'm dying to see what she has in store next. I'm hoping for something acoustic, or something inspired by "Haunted" as this album's creation was inspired by "Serve The Ego." Now, sorry for rambling on! To quickly sum it all up, 0304 is worth the buy! I can't wait to hold it in my hands! Peace, Mark ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V8 #227 ***************************
