I missed the show last week, but apparently I didn't miss anything. They said she was #17 last week, and this week she moved up 4 to #13. I'm sure that after the CD is released and people buy it, she'll go up more. I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but I don't care this is my opinion and I'm entitled to it, so flame away - I've been on the list since 1997, listening to Jewel since then and I hate it. Where Chris can't find a skippable track, which is fair enough, I can find only one that I want to listen to - "haunted". I miss the old Jewel, the one who Sean Penn (i think it was) described as potentially the female Dylan. I even miss the Jewel of This Way which was poppy and catchy without the need for all the production. It's all gone wrong for me by 5 seconds into the first track when the hip-hop beat kicks in and Jewel reaches for her rhyming dictionary and big book of platitudes. "So much violence ends in silence", apparently. You think? Hardly hard-hitting social commentary. Run 2 U's beats feel like Ray Of Light / Born Slippy, Intuition is over-produced faux-Shakira nonsense and the whole thing just comes across as a triumph of style over substance. The bleeps in "2 Find U" are not just unnecessary, they're downright irritating, and what is clearly a good song becomes irritating. It's the same story throughout half of the album - potentially decent songs murdered by irritating, unnecessary production and a clear refusal to let the songs stand on their own merits. The other half of the album is more rock-based. Yes U Can reminds me of Roxette, Doin' Fine sounds like S Club, Sweet Temptation and America sound very eighties. In the latter, the line "we are trucking in America, we are in America" feels like bowing to the Walmart censorship brigade to ensure sales... and then the track promptly gets hit by the production again and Jewel's voice is slowed down, another of the irritating touches which pepper the album. The point is no longer being made in the lyrics, it's in the production. Hopefully the live renditions will cut through most of this and allow the songs to shine. I'm sure some of you will argue that this was the intention all along, that it's an ironic look at the music industry and the world in the year 2003, but I'd much rather Jewel have risen above it than joined in. The note to the fans in the inlay reads like a tacit apology. I think it'll be huge. I think she'll pick up a load of new fans, but I think it's dreadful, it's lyrically trite, and the production sounds forced in an attempt to hook the commerical mainstream. You'll note I singled out Haunted - it's layered, it's multi-textured, it's interesting, it's oppressive, and most of all, it's not got the same production... not one of the Mendez co-writes, either. That's my opinion, and I hope some of you can respect it. Can't decide yet! Some of the songs are good but some of the songs is too much "Shakira-style" and some songs seems like Jewel was trying really hard to write the melodies! And 2 Find U sounds like a Nelly Furtado song! But I do have my favourites! They are Fragile Heart, Intution, 2 Become One.. Maybe this CD will grow inside of me, don't know yet though... The CD is veeeery good and there are some real gems here. Let's go track by track: 1) Stand: A : Really good lyrics, good opening track. I don't see it as single material, so I hope it's not the 2nd single. Maybe a winter release at most. I really like some lines here: "so much violence ends in silence" is great. The beat is hot too. 2) Run 2 U: B : It's ok. It's my least favorite track on the album, because, let's face it, it's a good Kylie Minogue song. I think Kylie is not that bad so is this track. It's a good dance track but not much beyond that. 3) Intuition: A++ : I love this song. It's one of my favorites. This song really makes me wanna dance. Fantastic 1st single, it deserves to be a smash! I can't get tired of it! 4) Leave The Lights On: A++ : The clip I heard was a bit faster and I was kinda used to that. I didn't know it was slower. I prefer it faster, hehe, but that's probably because I'm used to it. Anyway, great vocals! Jewel shines here at her best. Love it. Really groovy. I don't see it as single material anymore but as a fantastic album track. 5) 2 Find U: A++ : Wow!! I looooove this one!!! It's definitly a single! I really wasn't expecting it to be that good. Gosh, it's a #1!!! It should be 2nd single. 6) Fragile Heart: A+ : Awww... Isn't Jewel just sweeeet??? This is one of the cutest Jewel songs ever. The whistling is soooo cute. 7) Doin' Fine: A+ : It's so much better than what I thought it would be! This is really cool, very fun. It's a great track to listen to. 8) 2 Become 1: A+ : It's really good. Yeah, it sounds like This Way part 2 but it's much better than that. The album version rocks. 9) Haunted: A+++ : Gosh, how far Jewel has come! This song is incredible! Unbelievable! No, seriously, it's really awesome. Plus, the album really needed a breakdown from all its happiness, if you know what I mean. I can't wait to listen to a live version of it! 10) Sweet Temptation: A : It's cool. I like it. A fun track. 11) Yes U Can: A+ : For some reason, the "yes you can" part reminds me of Garbage. This song is very cool. Very retro. 12) U&Me=Love: A++ : I'm in love with this song. It's sooo cool and interesting! One of my favorites also. 13) America: A++ : You should have seen my face when she said "Everywhere I go seems like Bush is on tv / "We shed blood in the name of liberty" / Uh-huh. Alright." It was like :-O . It's really great. The eletronic thing in the end are super cool! 14) Becoming: A++ : This is fantastic. "A love song to myself", as Jewel says. It's beautiful. The perfect song to listen to when you're going to sleep. Overall, an almost perfect album!! This stands at my favorite Jewel album ever (of course, right behind POY, but that doesn't count, hehe...). So, you people who were worried, don't be. It's really really really awesome. I can't to have the real CD in my hands!!! Fabio ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 May 2003 10:00:23 -0700 From: "Crystal Ackles" Subject: [EDA] 0304 first listen I'm struggling through a p.o.s. computer to listen to 0304, and I've heard up to some of Fragile Heart. And I have to say that so far this album is 10x's better than I thought it would be. It's a perfect mix of Jewels beautiful voice and dance beats. She didn't change to much at once, its not like she went Rap artist or anything, She basically took her lyrics and placed them into more upbeat groovy sounds. Now I'm starving for the real album. I can't wait to hear Haunted, it's the only reason I'm putting up with this stop and go, stop and go. Go Jewel! (Doin Fine, and Sweet Temptation) .. but i'm postive they'll grow on me. You know how Jewel usually incorporates a single word repeatedly on a CD? Like on Spirit, it was 'flame' .. on This Way it was 'Disco' .. seems like on this CD it's like "fall into me".. or along those lines. heh.heh. Gotta love "Haunted!"
