As a mailing list admin myself, as well as someone who has to belong to several lists for professional and not personal reasons (i.e. it's work to read some of them), I prefer to know that people posting to a list actually MEANT to post to said list. That is, I'd rather people have to choose/override their mailer to post, than everyone who intends to reply off-list to someone accidently posting to the list. Especially as you get a list as large and active as this one, the "normal" default tends to result in a lot of messages that shouldn't have been posted. I'd rather NOT receive messages that were meant to be personal. I'd prefer to even have to type in 'jewel@smoe.org' every time I want to post or reply, than see private messages go public.
