Hi Angels, I think Steve and Alisa, and others, are on the right track. "Intuition" is a serious song. Jewel has done exactly what she said she wanted to do: make pop music more lyric-driven. The comparison with WWSYS that Shawney made was perceptive too. There are also echoes of "Stephenville, Texas" and "The New Wild West". And "Innocence Maintained" is there as well. The lyrics are pure Jewel, the same Jewel as in the beginning. It's certainly not a "spoof". Though, there is a delicious irony in the fact this song is being used in an advertising campaign when it effectively says not to believe advertising, not to be seduced or brainwashed by popular commercial culture. There is a further irony in the fact that Jewel is using a form of that culture to put across her message, an irony I'm sure she is very aware of -- we know she loves irony. At the moment I'm reading a book called "Jesus and the Goddess" -- on gnosticism. In it I came across a passage about a young person called Epiphanes (2nd century AD; he died at 17) . The authors of "Jesus and the Goddess" summarise his ideas like this: "He proposes a mystical anarchism which urges us to discover the natural goodness within ourselves and live according to our own essential nature ..." This called Jewel and "Intuition" to mind (as well as a number of other writers) -- maintain your innocence and follow your heart, your intuition. Epiphanes also urged people not to be bound by social/cultural conventions, though he put it much more politically than Jewel would. On that political note, I was listening to Nina Simone today and one of the songs was "Mississippi Goddam". Great song. Great singer. She will be missed. Take care, Barry Howarth And since it seems clear there's no one leading us here The only thing left it appears is to task ourselves to be better each time, than those before us We'll be an army of thieves, of self-freed slaves, of mild-mannered maids We'll fight with whispers and blades So get ready, a new day is dawning JK >------------------------------ > >Date: Thu, 24 Apr 2003 15:46:54 +1000 >From: Stephen Hallowes >Subject: [EDA] The whole spoof parody intuition album titles extravaganza! > >Hey Guys > >Now and Zen girl (forget your real name, sorry) recently posted what I >thought was a very good point - this album isn't going to be a spoof. Simone, who died of cancer Monday in France at age 70, was a one-of-a-kind singer, songwriter and performer who was as volatile and uncompromising as she was talented and innovative. Blues, jazz, folk, pop, gospel, classical - she made each unmistakably her own. Ditto the songs she covered by artists as varied as George Gershwin, Jaques Brel, Sandy Denny, the Bee Gees and Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Her own songs included such classics as "To Be Young, Gifted and Black" (later covered by Franklin), "Four Women," "Nobody's Fault But Mine," the stirring piano instrumental "Central Park Blues" and the fiery, civil rights-era protest song "Mississippi Goddam." Jewel, 28, describes the fiery Simone as having been "way more punk-rock than punk-rock. She did it from her gut." Speaking by phone Tuesday from Nashville, the San Diego singer-songwriter discussed her passion for Simone's music and life. Question: What did Nina Simone mean to you? Jewel: "Whoa. I don't know how to sum it up. She's somebody that, to this day, I listen to every day. I've listened to her since when I was very young and have never outgrown her. Some people you move on from; you absorb their music, learn from what they do and then move on. But I've never been able to learn what she does. "She meant everything she sang, and there was an anger under her; even her love songs had a seething energy. She was so smart that you got every irony she put into a note or word. She was like a punk rocker. She had a real punk attitude and did everything her way and was not afraid to speak out. She was also a wild performer. And her voice!" Q.: Did you ever see her perform live? Jewel: "Never did. And I kick myself. For years people would ask me: 'If you could sing with anyone in the world, who would sing with?' I'd always say: 'Nina Simone,' but I never would dare to ask her." Q.: I saw Nina Simone perform at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland in the 1980s. Midway through the concert, a young woman seated near the front got up and started walking toward the restrooms. Nina saw her, stopped the show, had a spotlight put on the woman, and demanded to know where the hell she was going, or words to that effect. She shamed her into sitting back down and waiting until the concert was over before heeding nature's call. Jewel: She took her thing serious! I've done that at my shows; I've embarrassed people who got up, although I never (prevented them) from leaving. Nina was right - you don't show up late for a concert, you get there by the time it says on the ticket. I love that. I think artists that demand respect like that are rare. She was outrageous. I've heard amazing stories about her." Q.: What led you to perform "The Other Woman," which Simone popularized, each night on your tour last year? Jewel: "I admired it for a long time, but never did it before. I'd done Cole Porter songs in concert before and some arias. And last year I was really into that song." Q.: In approaching 'The Other Woman," did you want to remain as true as possible to Simone's version, or give it a different twist? Jewel: "Doing it live, there's a feeling that song gives you, and I just tried to get it across as honestly and directly as I could. It probably hits me very different than her. I was just trying to be sincere and honest in getting that emotion across. Because that's what she did, it's what singers do. "I did a very similar arrangement to hers. My voice is different, but I don't have a huge ego; I just like the feeling a song gives me. You would do a disservice to Simone if you did it different - it might not be sincere. A song develops over time. It isn't until you live in it and explore every nook and cranny that it starts to live in you." Q.: Simone was a key figure in the civil rights movement in the 1960s, when she recorded "Mississippi Goddam." She was fiercely independent throughout her career, and was one of the first American artists to wear African clothes and have her hair in an Afro. When did you become aware of the her as an activist and social crusader? Jewel: "When I heard 'Mississippi Goddam.' When you hear performances of her live, she was electrifying. She was also a student at the Juilliard School of Music. I was talking to Elton John about her, and he said that she's one of the most underrated piano players ever. Her solo on 'Love Me Or Leave Me' is so good it's sick! She was such a good musician and completely outrageous. She kind of reminded me of Josephine Baker - she was as raunchy as she wanted to be." Q.: What albums would you suggest by Simone for someone who may not know her work? Jewel: " 'Feeling Good in Song,' although it doesn't have 'Lilac Wine' on there. Her version of 'Lilac Wine' beats Eartha Kitt's; Nina blew that song out of the water. Her vibrato is very particular. It's a lot like her (as a) person. It's not like Odetta's vibrato; it's a lot more tough. Even when she(Simone) was tender, she was capable of setting you off at any moment. "She used that to get across her thoughts and ideas, and she was brutally, tenaciously dedicated to that honesty. That's why people of all generations will love her music - the angst and pain and joy, all together. It's the same thing that made Nirvana really great. "Something, too, that is really amazing was her song selection. She had such a political agenda, but her versions of 'If You Knew' and 'Let It Be Me' were amazing. She combined classical, blues and jazz with pop and folk, and her taste was impeccable."
