Hey Guys Now and Zen girl (forget your real name, sorry) recently posted what I thought was a very good point - this album isn't going to be a spoof. I just think that there is kind of a level of misundestanding going on about Jewel's new album, the songlist, and Intuition.... and I wanted to post my opinion and see what other people think. I personally think that this is the kind of thing we should be talking about, not renaming Jewel's old albums with hip hop slang! (not that that isn't fun - my personal fave was Phat Boi)... and if you think you're making fun of Jewel by doing that, she's a step ahead of you. :) See.... I don't think Intuition is a direct parody, or a "spoof". I don't think Jewel is saying "this type of music sucks and I'm going to make fun of it". I think what she's saying is "the way in which this music is presented sucks, and I'm going to make fun of that". Jewel isn't parodying the music... she's commenting on the way pop stars package their music and their image in general in such a slick, manufactured, seductive way, so as to sort of "seduce" their audience... or make the public fall in love with them. In other words - it's an illusion.. the truths that pop culture present are an illusion. That's the general comment she's making with Intuition, I think. Not - pop music is crap so I feel like spoofing it. That's not it at all. In truth I think Jewel likes pop music, but she wants to inject intelligent thought and meaning into it instead of it being simply a tool for marketing. Same with the video. Some have asked how the video being a parody makes it different... she's taking her clothes off all the same. Well that's like saying Spinal Tap would be the same movie if it weren't intended as a parody. As for the titles, again - I think she's joking. She's having fun and playing around with pop culture, and trying to let people know she has a sense of humour. I definitely think the hip-hop slang used in the titles is done all in good fun, and in a tongue in cheek manner. At first I didn't think so, but just seeing the tracklist gave me that feeling. It's too over the top and silly, and I know Jewel's sense of humour, as we all do. However, this does NOT mean that this album is a parody. It does NOT mean that those songs are going to be parodies. Parodies are generally EXTREMELY one-dimensional. Jewel is not Weird Al. She's having a bit of fun with the titles of her songs, but the songs themselves will most likely have many dimensions... and not just be various humorous rip-offs of popstars she wants to spoof. That's not what Jewel is about. That's not what Intuition is about. What do you guys think? Steve PS - Everyone on this list has a right to their opinion. Tom shouldn't have to post long messages defending his right to say what he thinks about Intuition or the songlist... and the fact that he had to I think is pretty ridiculous. If you want to argue, at least come up with an argument, or an alternate point of view, instead of just accusing someone who is being negative of being "disrepctful to Jewel". That's just bullshit. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Apr 2003 07:31:28 +0000 (GMT) From: Ray Wong Subject: Re: [EDA] P Jewely? I couldn't have said it better myself. Maybe Jewel is trying to prove that she is not just that "hippie girl" that the public seems to know her as, and she can be just as "pop" as anyone else, while at the same time still having meaningful lyrics. Intution does not sound like a "parody" really.....maybe the whole image is, but certainly not the song. If Jewel wanted to be a comedian, she'd be collaberating with Wierd Al, and Steve Poltz.....not Lester Mendez and Rick Knowles as Jewel Herself said... Its all in good fun though! I guess this is what you get when you shove pop/hip hop/dance into the faces of acoustic-lovers. Imagine if she actually does do an acoustic album afterwards. It'll be like "In your face!" to everyone who believed she sold out or changed into complete pop for good. That would be cool. Also, I keep thinking of people who can't believe shes with the "big name" record industry people. Is it really that horrible? Theyre big name industry people for a reason. I believe that every producer so far has been big name, excluding the one for Pieces Of You (Correct me if I'm wrong. I've never heard of him before, and even then, Jewel said it was mainly just her doing it). I think the only reason POY didn't have a big name producer was just because it was a very low budget album. No one was expecting it to sell like it did. If she had the money and power to get a big name producer, she probably would've. Thats my two cents, anyone feel free to correct me on any wrong statements I may of made. When her album title came up, they asked her what it meant, and all that she said was something like, "well, I don't know, it's not really that big of a deal, but like all my fans are reacting and making up names and codes for it." and she never said anything about the "snapshot of '03 and '04" OH, and she said Oh3Oh4. They made jokes about what it could mean and Jewel mentioned that maybe it means the date like March 4th. meaning march forth, go forward. Well, thats it, but I thought it was interesting. They didn't even play the whole song though. Which is strange because I thought she would have, but this almost guarantees a big debut next week.. That said, she debuted on the Adult Top 40 charts last week at 25, and rises up to 18 this week.. She got Airpower, which I *think* means she got the second highest gains, after Train's "Calling All Angels".. I really don't understand what the problem is with having big name producers and a dance type of sound and real promotion. (Not that this has everything to do with Mark's post, just something I've been thinking about.) It amazes me how quick we are to call ourselves Every Day Angels and to write in asking for help because of a family crisis (house burned down, prayer requests,) but as soon as Jewel does something different we immediately get all up in arms at anyone that does not share our opinion. You have to love Jewel all the time, but not so much that you also enjoy how she looks because that's objectification. You can't mention another artist here, NJC or not, because Jewel is far better than them. Pop is crap and as soon as Jewel goes pop I'm going to hit the road, but not so quickly as to forget to call her a sell out beforehand. I want to have more free concerts, but hell no, don't let them be sponsored. I want a new album out, when are we going to hear new stuff, has she died? I want a new album, but it has to be a genre I like, and if I don't like pop that means it's crap. I know I've written before on the basis of "the old days" but... I don't know... we used to have some sort of respect for the opinions of others. We didn't used to call each other idiots over differing opinions. Every Day Angels. If I was an angel, I know all I would do was tell other people their opinions were those of an idiot. That is the true mark of an open minded and intelligent person, after all.
