In just one week (pre-impact I might add) Intuition is being played on 42 of the 124 *pop* radio stations. She's also being played on 24 of the 84 Adult Top 40 Radio stations and 15 of the 45 Modern Adult stations. That's pretty damn good for the first week, not to mention the fact that the song hasn't even IMPACTED yet. Radio aren't supposed to really play it until next week... I think it's very interesting that it's getting more airplay on the pop stations than on the Adult Top 40 stations as of yet. That's definitely very reversed from when Standing Still debuted in 2001. Next week we'll have a better idea of exactly how many stations are going to jump onto the song right away, and what the spins will be like. This could be the kind of situation where radio stations warm to it right away and she has a quick and easy ride up the charts. Or it could take longer than that. I have confidence that this song will be successful on pop radio, and I really hope I'm right, for no other reason than it will give Jewel a chance to have some success with 2nd and 3rd singles. Adult Top 40 is all well and good, but their big disadvantage is that they have trouble moving on from a song once it has become a hit. Jewel's 2nd and 3rd singles from This Way were ignored because those stations were content to continue playing Standing Still. With pop radio, the turnover is much quicker, and they don't like playing old songs ... so new singles from artists with prior hits tend to be embraced very quickly. I'd like to see that happen with Jewel. It might give her a chance to make more of a statement than just the lead single. Maybe Atlantic will release some more daring songs this time as well. Anyway, so far it's looking very positive. As I said, I'll have a better impression of how it's doing after the end of next week, the official impact week. Howdy y'all, thought I'd post to inform y'all that everytime NASCAR has a race at Talladega super-speedway, they play Jewel's cover of Sweet Home Alabama. NASCAR plays a clip of a song everytime they go to commercial, and other times as well. At this track, they used to play Lynard Skynard's version of the song, but now they almost always play Jewel. This is especially cool when they use this with video clips of the race, such as the most exciting action. I think Jewel even sang at one of the races a few years ago, but my mind stays a little cloudy when I watch racing (I support Dale Jr. by drinking Bud Light, lol). Y'all have a good one. I believe that Jewel is doing what she needs to do to get the music to the fans, and also to support the positive action she helps make possible (ie. Clearwater work, etc.) I think it's a tough call and I know many independent artists who want to stay that way, most obviously Ani DiFranco and also Holly Figueroa of the Indiegrrl list. THese are women who are strong and independent and want to remain that way. However, the truth is that they do not reach as many people without the corporate backing. So, artists need to decide to what extent they will "sell themselves" to the corporate system and I think what Jewel's doing is hurting no one and is actually helping many people. She would like to remain in the mainstream to affect as many people as possible in a positive way. Of course, she's made money and has reached a certain level of success, and of course, everyone runs into glass ceilings after awhile, but I do not doubt that Jewel will continue to use her influence to acheive positive things in the world. I would like to believe that she is not acting out of self interest, but because she loves music and has deep humanitarian concerns. That is what I would like to do if I were given the opportunity to be involved in the music business on a larger scale...to do what you can with what you've got and to be as positive as possible. I think there is nothing wrong with Jewel endorsing a product if she thinks it is genuinely a good product. I mean, it's hard not to be cynical in these crazy times, but I really think what Jewel is doing is good and she has certainly influenced and inspired many people. So, unless I see blatant proof that Jewel is "selling out", I will continue to support and buy her stuff since I love the music and am inspired by it myself. Jewel has shared her childhood, the wisdom she got from her parents and elsewhere and has been generous in sharing what she knows. If you listen, there's a lot of good stuff there...so, whatever Jewel needs to do to continue to be a presence in the music world, more power to her...I hope it's all good. I won't make any judgements until I hear the new CD. I haven't heard any of it yet, I've been way too busy with my own musical pursuits, but eventually I will check it out and I will not "lose my faith in Jewel" unless there really is good reason to. And, I have not seen any good reasons yet... So, peace to all of you, and keep loving the music and being creative and healthy and stay sane in these scary times. Music is healing and powerful and let's just leave it that. Your alert about the Schick website allowed us to have them make some corrections to that site in keeping with how we had agreed that Jewel's image and announcement must be presented. So thanks for that. Let me answer some of your questions. First some back story. With downloading so prevalent, revenues are drastically down for both record labels and artists; this isn't news to any of you. Naturally this means no one can afford to do things in the way they used to be done. For record companies this results in the recording and promotion budgets being drastically cut. No artist is exempt to this, so it affects us too. Jewel had, as usual, a very specific creative vision for her next music. The album she envisioned was an expensive one to make, promote and tour. So how to get the music made and to fans in a time when far less money is available to do so? Enter Schick into the picture. When we heard from Atlantic of Schick's interest in licensing a song for their Intuition campaign, we thought it might be a good fit. Earlier this year, Atlantic played Jewel's song Intuition for the Schick people; they loved it and decided to license it for their commercial. What resulted was a unique music partnership between the artist, the label and Schick that allowed the music to be created and promoted in the way that Jewel wanted. As soon as Jewel finishes the album she'll write you a note and give you the entire story, it's a pretty interesting one. But basically for us it's pretty simple, there are a number of things that we care a lot about, among them Jewel's music, Clearwater Project and Soul City Cafe. Relationships like this one with Schick allow those to continue in this currently difficult time in the industry. And by the way, Schick made a donation to the Clearwater Project too and we are talking to them about other ways that we could partner on Clearwater Project, Soul City Cafe and her tour. So there might be more we can do together. With the May IntuitionFest in New York, Schick is celebrating National Intuition Day (yes one already existed). It's sort of a fair. There are a number of authors speaking on the topic of intuition and a lot of other things going on; it sounds pretty interesting actually. Schick invited Jewel to sing and offered a slot to a Soul City Cafe artist also. They preferred a female artist from the East Coast so we invited Rebecca Reed to join Jewel. I think it will be great exposure for Rebecca; there will be a lot of press going on. We're working on some other great promotional opportunities coming up for Soul City Cafe artists and I'll let you know when we know more. Plus, I've heard all the semi-finalists for the Soul City Cafe Music Quest and love the music. I have my favorites and I can't wait to hear who yours are. The June playoffs are going to be fun, Jewel is looking forward! Enough for now, hope this answers your questions, love and gratitude to you all. You are the reason. Lenedra J. Carroll Manager P.S. (Can't really do that directly but oh well!) That message offered a little insight into the whole campaign, and probably eased a lot of other EDAs. Shick seems to be a really good corporation to work with, if Jewel did have to go for such a thing. And is it just me, but does it seem like Jewelink and those messages always seem to be aimed towards the EDAs or follow up to what is being discussed on this list? I really like that, if its true! Why did jewel marketing herself so much??? i thought atlantic would help her, but propably this is just like stockmarkets, good results in the past doesn4t guarantee success in the future. I feel like jewel is trying to get more commercial, working with a big producer, writing no more accoustic songs. Is here 4loyalty4to music still there.
