For all others - please feel free to continue on and read this very long winded e-mail that I feel states a lot of valid points - you may disagree - but, probably not........ I'm going to second that this list will crumble apart if EDAs (esp new ones that come to the list as a result of the new album) have to continue to receive dozens of negative e-mails a day. I don't think that I'm the only one who questions the wisdom of continuing to subscribe to something that only brings you down - especially when it's involving an artist as positive as Jewel. Besides - I thought that side discussions were supposed to be kept in private e-mails and off the list anyway. Maybe I'm wrong - it's happened before. I'd also like to second - or third (whatever it's up to now) - Jill's previous statements. Thank you. I mean - I think that stating that Jewel is beautiful is about the most obvious thing that you can say. It's like saying that the universe is a big place or something like that. Hey - the sky is blue - NEWSFLASH. But, I can understand the occasional comment about - wow she looked great or whatever - but, the stuff about the amount of cleavage or leg that was showing or how much she turns someone on is probably better suited to centerfolds and other types of women that may fall under the same umbrella. Let's give Jewel a bit more respect here. Jewel's beauty was not the first thing that I noticed about her. It's not the first thing that I talk about when I talk about her. Although - it is often a determining factor in deciding what kind of conversation someone is trying to have with me about her when they begin their statement with - Yeah, she's hot! - it's a short conversation. If that person has nothing more worthwhile to say about her then I'd rather talk to them about something else. C'mon now - this should be an exciting time. The new single is coming out - the new album is soon to follow - there's a book comig out about her - she has a movie in the works - in less than a year's time the summer tour will have passed and we'll all have the latest poetry book to talk about. I'm excited about all of it. I want to hear it before I get on here and down it. I want to see the new concert set before I badmouth it. I want to hear the new album before I criticize it. Having an open mind is what allowed me to listen to Jewel's music in the first place. Up until then if it wasn't classic rock or if it didn't possess some of the fastest guitar licks known to man it didn't make it onto my stereo. But, Jewel's music affected me upon hearing it like almost nobody else's ever did. Having opened my mind to her I've since been able to open my mind to a ton of other stuff I previously would have never allowed myself to listen to. My life is the better for it. I've seen a ton of things - heard a lot of stuff - been to a lot of events - experienced a lot of things that I never would have allowed myself to previously, that I would have only dreamt of. I'm a better person having allowed these things into my life - and Jewel's music was a big catalyst for such things to be allowed to happen. So - if possible - maybe we can talk about such things as: How excited you are about the new album... How much you do or don't like it after you've heard it... The latest tour date announcements and ticket information.... The latest video or TV appearance.... How your latest concert experience went... Your pre or post show encounters with fellow EDAs or Jewel herself... Whatever - all I know is that there is far too much good to be taken from Jewel as an artist for all of this negative bickering to continue. Jewel's music isn't about petty differences or mud-slinging. Is it? I don't think that it is. It seems to me as well, in my opinion, that Jewel has managed to continue to evolve with every other album. There were directions that some people didn't like for one reason or another or there were certain songs that they didn't care for. But, everyone reading this right now. So, overall - each of these Jewel albums, books, tours has been a pretty positive experience. So - don't we owe her enough respect to believe that she knows what she wants in her art? If she brings someone in to contribute maybe it's just that - a contribution. Do we all really think that she's going to allow someone to take her in a direction that she doesn't want to go? Don't we believe in her enough to believe that she has enough artistic integrity to hold onto her beliefs and not allow someone else to take her art in a way that she doesn't want it to go? Why don't we give her the credit that she deserves? She's been working hard at producing an entire album of new material that we haven't heard before - and recording it in a manner that she hasn't before. Doesn't that excite anyone else? A dozen or so new Jewel songs that no one here has ever heard before? If you don't like it then so be it. But, I think that not only the people who receive all of these e-mails deserve more respect than this - but most of all Jewel deserves more respect than this. I may be wrong - but I doubt it. "During the Second World War, big band music was at its zenith," the Alaskan singer/songwriter said recently. "I knew we were headed to war, and I wanted to make a record that was fun, that made you have the same feelings as big band music and just makes you want to lose yourself in rhythm and feel passionate and young." Jewel is still finishing the as-yet-untitled project but has set a June 3 release date and is issuing the first single, "Intuition," this week. Cuban-American Lester Mendez (Shakira, Enrique Iglesias) is producing the album, which also features a collaboration with Will Smith's former music maker DJ Jazzy Jeff. Jewel's first foray into electronic music came last year, when a remix of "Serve the Ego," from 2001's This Way, reached #1 on Billboard's Hot Dance Music Club chart. "I loved hip-hop and rap when I was first exposed to it in the '80s," Jewel explained in a statement. "I loved the beats, and I loved the artists who had the ability to be very lyrical with those beats. I also like the hypnotic nature of dance music. There is something very primordial about it. "So you are going to hear my love of all these types of music on the new album, and I tried to combine them in a way that makes sense. You have folk melodies against hip-hop beats against a French accordion against hand clapping and whistling solos, but it still really sounds like me." Jewel has also been writing her third book, a collection of "sexy love poems," and she's been staging contests around the country to discover emerging talent. The finalists, listed on www.soulcitycafe.com, will compete for an opening slot on her next tour. In the meantime, since she has an aunt and uncle in the Marines, Jewel is closely following the conflict in Iraq. "I'm glad people are talking about it now," she said. "It's gotten to where it's frightening to see how little people are being encouraged to speak against it. I wish it wasn't happening, but I'd hate for the troops to feel unsupported. I don't make the decisions. It's frustrating." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Mar 2003 16:00:54 -0300 From: "Fabio (wnet)" Subject: [EDA] Don't freak out!!! Yesterday was the first day of the "Intuition" video shoot in Los Angeles. Shot in a downtown park with a decidedly urban look, director Marc Klasfeld surrounded Jewel with a troop of extras: street people, basketball players, tourists and a host of other characters, filling out his vision of Jewel's unreal reality journey. Klasfeld's treatment of the song shows Jewel in several situations where simple actions of the everyday world are transformed into familiarly ironic commercial extravaganzas. Without giving anything else away, suffice it to say, Jewel is startlingly exposed in an appealing new way...and she does do a little booty shakin' Jewel is going to make a big impact with her new single and it will be her freshest song so far, and i am sure it will make the number one position and it shows jewel in cool situations. What i do enjoy already is that she is making a new road in music. That is amazing cool, because it is never easy to change. I hope she changed it because she wanted it personally. I think working with Lester Mendez will give you an edge in making an impact in the music industry. I expect a lot of good things in the press and from promoters to be said about the new record. The new record will reflect jewel4s creativity that this point in her life, she looks back to her roots, and adds new sights to the record with various instruments and of course amazing new lyrics. To write lyrics has always been Jewel4s biggest craft and talent. Those lyrics are making you happy, melancholic so now and then. I am pretty sure she is going to let us hear a lot of cool statements. Jewel4s lyrics make you think how the world is nowadays (hands in 1998 was a great tune in terms of evoking new sights!!!and the video was truly amazing how people have to help themselves) Jewel is always inspirational. The new video for example will show jewel in a lot of cool events that will make a special song wortwhile. I am sure that the new video is going to be a blast. i hope it will be released as a special DVD song which you can order at jeweljk.com or at amazon. The new record will be full of new thoughts and influences that reflects jewel4s mind at this moment. She is going on a journey to a new world, and the sails will be blowing big for jewel. The number one hits are going to be born, i feel it!! Do you feel the excitment too, just a few days before the new record releases and the radioplay starts to airborn! i am full of hope and of praise for jewel4s new moves, in music industry. She can as no one else match lyrics with performances on stage which are cool and amazing! Jewel a dancing diva, who would have believed that??? She said in the past that she not liked to go out a lot....she seemed to change her life & image... take care, Michiel ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Mar 2003 14:24:43 EST From: GnG849@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Question When is the new album supposed to be re-leased?
