The "betray their artistic integrity" being the key word. people are too quick to label anyone who sings pop music, like britney spears, to be sell outs *just* because of the type of music they sing... but just because you choose to sing pop music because perhaps you *gasp* like it... (obviously if your favourite type of music is pop, and you want to be an artist, you are most likely going to want to sing what you like) it doesn't mean you've "sold out" or that you're just doing it for the money and/or popularity. my big issue with the term "sell out" in general is that people don't seem to realize *this is that person's JOB*, so of course, they want to be as successful as possible in their job, and make as much money as they can... just as almost any person who chooses a different type of career path does in their own field. as long as they aren't betraying their artistic integrity - like an endorsing some sort of product when they have no idea what it is, just for the sake of more money, they are not selling out just because they happen to be popular and make a lot of money doing what they do. > and are thus regarded > as Rock Gods: Neil Young., Bob dylan, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Bruce > Springsteen, it's not the fact that they've never "sold out" that has made them rock gods, it's the fact that they are talented. > a list of those who > HAVE sold out is endless: Elton John < Rod Stewart, The Beatles(started OUT > as a SELL OUT and turned into an ARTISTIC ONLY BAND--thats AMAZING--a reverse > SELL OUT!!), The Rolling Stones,(In the 80'/s and 90's they SOLD OUT), > BRITNEY, CHRISTINA, and all the other Pop girls. this is such a generalization that it's just ridiculous, and this is where what I said above comes in, "and all the other pop girls"...whoa, JUST because someone sings pop music does not in ANY way mean they don't have their own artist integrity. Singing a certain type of music does not make you an instantanious sell out... this is exactly what I'm talking about, people are way way too quick to just deam everyone a sell out who perhaps doesn't share the same ideals they do, but it doesn't mean they've betrayed their own ideals! Just because Jewel happens to be experimenting with music that you consider to be more "commerical successful" than her regular music, doesn't mean she's doing it for the money, so it doesn't mean she's "sold out"... it doesn't mean she's doing it for the record company, or because she wants to be more popular, but you know what? even if she does want to be more popular, who cares? she wants a successful career, she wants to reach a larger number of people with her music and her thought inspiring lyrics... as long as she's not compromising her artistic integrity for it (and just because she's experimenting with a new type of music does not mean she is) she's not selling out. I myself like a wide variety of music. I'm not being disloyal to the music I love by choosing to listen to someone else, I just have a wide range of tastes, so does Jewel, and she'd like to dabble in them. So, you want to say Britney spears had sold out because she endorsed pepsi? well, what if she actually really happens to like pepsi? that isn't going against her ideals... now, if she's strictly a coke girl, and did it for the money, then,. yeah, it is. > I have no definite opinion > on Jewel til lthe new CD is released. and that's what I think we should keep in mind here, can we please hold off on making assumptions from what we've had about Jewel's CD, and just wait the couple of months until it's here? ~ Sandy ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Mar 2003 02:54:37 -0500 (EST) From: "Angel_Eyes211" Subject: [EDA] Have we forgotten what Jewel has actually said? Hey all, this was posted in a JeweLink a few days ago, but it seems that a lot of you should really read it again. At first I was only going to quote one or two things, but in the end I realized that I might as well post it all. She says some things that makes me wonder why people would even bring up the subject of selling out or wonder why she's changing her style of music. I believe she says it best right here: "This record is really a natural extension for me. I began writing songs when I was 16, and I heard all kinds of stuff in my head. But I didn't have the skill to do it on guitar, so my first record was what I was able to get out of my head through my hands. Over the years, I've learned more about the craft, more about how to write, more about playing, more about music, and more about lyrics. So I'm finally able to further embellish the ideas I started with a long time ago. I've always been really interested in all kinds of music, I loved hip-hop and rap when I was first exposed to it in the '80s. I loved the beats, and I loved the artists who had the ability to be very lyrical with those beats. I also like the hypnotic nature of dance music; there is something very primordial about it. And, of course, I love folk music, I love story-telling and socially driven music. The tone of some of the new songs also leans towards jazz. So you are going to hear my love of all these types of music on the new album, and I tried to combine them in a way that makes sense. You have folk melodies against hip-hop beats against a French accordion against hand-clapping and whistling solos. But it still really sounds like me." So, what do you think now? Angel Eyes O:-) PS: I respect people's opinions, but I think some are more harsh than others.
