(to see Jennifer Garner on the red carpet....she's my favorite actress..hehe) and right before she pulled up guess who pulled up?? Jewel! I was so excited. They didn't even say anything about her though. All they did was show a half a second clip of her and then they said ok we are waiting for the big stars to show...I was disappointed...:( She looked really pretty from what I saw. She was wearing a baby blue dress. that was all I caught because the clip was so fast! Oh well...did any of ya'll see it? It doesn't make much sense, but she was wearing the white dress she wore last year.. I remember the pictures from the after party.. It was probably because no stars were on the red carpet earlier.. So, we'll see if she was there later if pictures show up.. <> - -- Scott http://scott.rocket-fish.org/ http://syd.rocket-fish.org/ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Mar 2003 20:22:54 EST From: WiddleyPud@aol.com Subject: [EDA] New Album Article Jewel Catches The Dance Bug On New Album Apparently Jewel fans are in for a shock. It seems that the platinum-selling singer will be taking full advantage of the success she recently came upon last year with the remix of her song "Serve The Ego." After the track hit the #1 spot on Billboardbs Hot Dance Music Club Play chart, the singer was inspired to take her music into new territories. Now her upcoming new album, which is due out June 3, will showcase her pursuit of this more modern sound, branching off from her typical AOR folksiness to also include dance and hip hop beats. Now therebs just no telling what this yodeling Alaskan will accomplish if supplied with just the right break. She enlisted Cuban American producer Lester Mendez to help attain her new musical vision. This is the same man who has also helped boost the careers of artists like Shakira, Santana and Enrique Iglesias. Although electronics were used in the production of the album, aiding the artist to make the kind of musical textures she envisioned, a live backing band was also brought in to make sure that Jewel retained some of the sound she has made her name with. Jewel came onto the scene with her 1995 album Pieces Of You. Her debut record eventually overcame its almost nonexistent early reception, and sold over 10 million copies worldwide on the strength of such radio friendly singles as "Foolish Games" and "You Were Meant For Me." Since then Jewel has recorded three other albums, including 1998bs Spirit and 2002bs This Way, as well as a collection of festive holiday recordings. Also included on the performerbs resume was a role in the Ang Lee directed civil war epic Ride With The Devil and a best selling collection of poetry, which she decided to give the cheesy title A Night With Armor. The first single from the currently untitled CD will be "Intuition" and will be released nationwide next week. Hey everyone, I haven't posted in ages, but after last night I feel the need to do so. I was at a friends birthday party, trying to fall asleep on an incredibly uncomfortable couch with half a headache and a re-run of Saturday Night Live comes on, and the musical guest is Jewel! It's an old episode, and she performed Who WIll Save Your Soul, and You Were Meant For Me. And you know what? I re-fell in love with Jewel. It took me all the way back to 1997, when I first stumbled across You Were Meant for Me while looking for Mysterious Ways on the radio (yeah I was nursing two fledgling interests in what are now the two reasons I write music; U2 and Jewel). Anyway, the point is, it reminded me of why I was so utterly in love with Jewel back in the last few years of the 90's. It was just her, her guitar, and her soul. She wrote honest songs and put herself right there for you. I'm not saying she doesn't do that now, but it was that music that made her famous. Every artist in my opinion has their angle; what sets them apart. When Jewel came along, she had this ability to write songs that dug a hole straight into your heart and wouldn't leave. That's why the world took notice. I mean damn, YWMFM, I swore up and down she wrote it JUST for me. Jewel singing right to me through the radio. I don't want to be controversial now, but I sincerely don't think that's what she's doing anymore. I think she's trying to write hit songs. Don't get me wrong, Serve The Ego (the ALBUM version not that piece of crap dance-mix) is one of the coolest rock songs I've heard in a long long time. I sat straight up in bed the first time I listened to it. That song owned me. But, well... I have absolutely no right to dictate her musical direction, all I guess I'm doing is identifying the Jewel I fell in love with. I dunno. I miss it. Until next time people... ~~Richard The Angel in Devil's Shoes http://cixelsyd.cjb.net/ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Mar 2003 17:41:27 -0800 From: "Crystal Ackles" Subject: [EDA] The New Album Hello, I'm also a little put off by the fact that Jewel is doing dance songs. Yes she can do what she wants, write what she wants, and sing what she wants, but for myself, I don't like dance music, it seems mindless to me. Now she does say its lyric driven, so I guess anything is possible. But without hearing anything, and not knowing any of the lyrics, and going off of the fact is "dance" music, I too am a little disappointed. But I always leave room for surprises =) Crystal ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Mar 2003 20:43:39 EST From: JewelBlues@aol.com Subject: [EDA] Re: SELLING OUT In a message dated 3/23/03 6:54:43 PM Eastern Standard Time, owner-jewel-digest@smoe.org writes: Date: Sun, 23 Mar 2003 23:38:39 +0000 From: "charlie zidon" Subject: [EDA] Selling Out This is only directed to certain people I think.... <> TO THJE ABOVE PERSON: NO I wont give her a break. And NO its Not 'great fun" to get more and more people to LIKE YOU by writing sanitized lyrics and "happy upbeat songs" to appeal to the widest audience possible. Its a rather pathetic thing to d ofor someone who was once referred to as "the Next Bob Dylan". Shes NOT living up to her true intellectual possibilities, but she IS living up to her true commericial possibilities. So NO, Its NOT great fun to have "more and more" fans. BRITNEY has MORE and MORE fans...I assume if Jewel deided to abandon ANY attempt at socially relevant ideas and turned into Britney to get "more and more" lsiteners..I guess you weould be happy..becasue you FOLLOW whatever she does as just GREAT (sarcastic). A great song is great song. She stil lwrites them. But not as well promoted. By GREAT--I refer to songs and lyrics of Meaning, not fluff, as on ehr FIRST CD and most of hre JEWELSTOCK songs that will never see a legitimate LP release such as "Memoirs of a Houswife" amnd "Nictotine Love". Songs with some great meaning. So NO..."more and more" fans at the loss of intelligent and meaninful lyrics is NOT acceptable regardless of the fact "She can do what she Wants". the question really is --WHY does she want to DO this POP culture ride? I haven't posted on here in awhile, but I thought I'd give my opinion about what Jewel's music decision. When I first heard that Jewel was doing dance music, I was a little worried that I wouldn't really enjoy it much since it's not what I'm used to hearing from her. Sometimes it's better when an artist sticks to the style they began with. On the other hand, I was thinking it is a good for Jewel to be able to try something new and put her creativity into something that will be exciting for her listeners..Perhaps something we've never heard from her before. I'm undecided as to whether I like Jewel changing her style, but I feel it is best for her to do what she feels comfortable doing and to continue expressing herself the way she has been. :) - -Jade *Tiny Angel* ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Mar 2003 22:50:21 -0330 From: "Mark Austin" Subject: [EDA] The selling out thing This is all so disheartening. Aren't we all here for being Jewel's hardcore fanbase? Can we at least wait until the album comes out or at least until the single is out before attacking her? Yeesh. It might end up being more "Jewelish" than you think, who knows. Lets drop it til then. Before This way came out i was a little nervous and when i first heard it, i was extremely disappointed. but now i love it and i respect that jewel changed a lil cause it was still her style. after hearing about this new album i am excited to see what she is putting out for us. I completely understand those who think jewel is changing to better serve radio etc... and im sorry if this new album will break your heart and u wont be able to love jewel anymore i really am, but we havent even heard one song off of it yet. lets just give her a chance and see what its all about!! maybe she will surprise you:) I know how you feel, its funny how something like that could impact you so much considering its not like you have a relationship/friendship with her. its just hard after following someone for so many years and respecting and admiring them as an artist and a person and then having them give in to the bullshit of the industry it can be discouraging especially when it is someone like jewel who stands for everything opposite of all that. but like i said maybe she will surprise you:) take care and peace....
