I think its cook she likes Norah so much. What I think is kind of funny though is that Norah won like 5 grammy awards but doesn't write any of her lyrics. And people seem to always bash people like Britney for this but they praise Norah for being so talented. Of course she plays piano well, but so does Vanessa Carlton, who does also write her own lyrics yet she didn't win a grammy. Just an observation. ~Stacey~ _________________________________________________________________ Tired of spam? Norah does write some of her lyrics...She wrote 2 songs on her album...Come away with me, her next single and Nightingale...Also she co-wrote a song...So she doesn't completely not write any lyrics And personally, I think Norah is a lot more talented than Britney Spears or Vanessa Carlton... ~MicheLe* The not so angel, Angel :) angelfood http://www.geocities.com/jewelnumber1fan ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Mar 2003 11:26:25 -0800 From: "Alisa Petersen" Subject: Re: [EDA] If Jewel was a Guy.... lOL! oh my god.. she sounds sexy even as a man. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Martin, Matthew" To: "Jewel (E-mail)" ; "Jewel-Digest (E-mail)" Sent: Friday, March 07, 2003 7:48 AM Subject: [EDA] If Jewel was a Guy.... > My Prince.... I guess it's one thing if you have a great voice, and are talented and don't write your own songs...and another if you're voice is mediocre, and you are more a marketing tool of the whole package and don't write your own songs. There are plenty of incredible singers out there who don't write their songs, and it doesn't make them any less of an artist. I mean wouldn't you rather hear them singing something that sounds good and showcases their voice properly, rather than a song they wrote which may lack in those departments because they don't have the skills or training to write it? I think a lot of people Britney bash (and I'm included on this) because she doesn't write her own songs, or sing well, or play an instrument. The main reason she got signed and had so much popularity was because she had the body, the face, and the dance moves to be able to market. Britney in my opinion is an entertainer, not a singer, or a musical artist. Her concerts have this carnival like quality to it...they are completely rehearsed, are pretty much the same exact thing in every location, have tons of special effects, and focus on the dancing rather than the singing. You go there to dance and sing along, to see cool effects, or if you're a guy to drool, but you don't go there to reall listen to the music and enjoy a night of raw intimate music. I bet with Norah Jones in concert, you'd get that latter. *the mystic angel* - -Jordana "This is Jordana, everyone"-Jewel "I'd rather see the world from another angle"-Jewel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Mar 2003 20:36:54 -0000 From: "Tom H" Subject: [EDA] Re: NJC:Jewel in RS (non songwriters) About Norah Jones... Her songs were all either cover versions of jazz standards that she likes, or written by herself, or written by her *friends* and members of her band Lee Alexander and Jesse Harris. They were mostly written before she was signed. They weren't written by a team of people hired by a major label - Norah Jones was not a preconceived idea, there was no guarantee that she was going to sell millions of albums. She was signed by Blue Note because of her incredible voice and they were aiming for a few hundred copies of this album to be sold. It was only after extensive touring and hell of a lot of word of mouth that the album got the recognition that led to her Grammy's. That's what makes Norah a lot different to Britney, Cheers, Tom NP - Transplants "California Babylon" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Mar 2003 22:37:53 +0100 From: "Michiel" Subject: [EDA] prospects of the first single hello jewelfans, I think honestly if the first Jewel single will get a nice reward from the fans in america who listen to her song on radio, then it will be going to run. We need a spot on the billboard chart, and we love to see a cool Jewel single charting at number one. We even more like a single dvd release as prerelease from her upcoming record. I always enjoy listening to Jewel, i think her work with Lester Mendez is going to be the start point of a 4It only can get better4story for jewel. Jewel is Atlantic4s only big name they have now, and a sale of her new record in millions would give Jewel a name and her position would be forever solid in the music industry. It is only a matter of 4 weeks and how the critics in europe will be after the news they hear in the usa. if the new record sells well, than we will see jewel for further appeareances in europe! but of course the american market, is always jewel4s number one priority.. no doubt about that, and she will perform on mtv4s show world4s premierre and also other programmes with carson daly and of course she will visit Conan O4brien Leno Letterman and many more like Killborn, the View, and other shows.. Jewel will suprise us and her decision to cooperate with a producer with a modern sound with the great lyrics and melodies that jewel can write, can be the beginning of the biggest success of jewel in her carreer! that is at least where i aim for! bye michiel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 Mar 2003 20:14:41 -0330 From: "Mark Austin" Subject: Re: [EDA] Re: NJC:Jewel in RS (non songwriters) >She was signed by Blue Note because of her >incredible voice and they were aiming for a few hundred copies of this > >album >to be sold. I agree that it was a lot of word of mouth and great raw talent that made this album so successful, but I think the label HAD to have much higher prospects than just a few hundred albums... Otherwise they wouldn't of got someone like Arif Mardin to produce. Maybe he saw it as a great sound and agreed. I think his paycheck had to be a little higher than something a few-hundred sales album would bring. I'm sure there must of been some great prospects for Norah if they got such a prestige producer for her. Don't deny it, you know how talented she must be. Unless of course, you have more solid proof and better knowledge, I'm making myself look dumb here. hehe. Not the hugest Norah fan. Love the sound and I know shes talented but I never really got into it enough. My two cents! Missed out a pretty important word there, hehe :). I got the album when it first came out last February - back then I was reading articles and the record company were hoping to sell a few hundred thousand albums, which obviously was quite a modest estimate. Blue Note is a pretty small label so even a few hundred thousand sales would've been pretty big, so it's cool that Norah's been such a success for them. The US Supreme Court said home taping is legal in its Betamax decision. Now, "as many copies as I want" is a bit of a stretch, you can't make hundred of them, but you can make them and give them to your family/friends. Mike has said this twice: > It is one of the worst forms of copyright infringement there is ...referring to people "offering free copies of something that is or was commercially available." Copyright law doesn't discriminate; it doesn't say one form is "worse" than any other. If it did, however, giving stuff away wouldn't be the worst form; worse would be _selling_ copies of stuff commercially available. Worse still would be a professional bootlegging operation where you manufactured copies on a large scale and sold those. Its going to be great. But with the DVD, don't expect any pre-release, we would know by now. That may even hinder sales on the new album, if its done right before. Music DVDs like that usually takes months, or over a year or even more to create. Also, I hear a lot of you going "She will get a Grammy for sure with this one!" and "It will sell millions!!" etc etc etc. I know something like that is great but it doesn't effect me at all. I don't care how well she does. I'm not saying that you guys don't all love her no matter what, but #1 hits or mega-sales or Grammy awards don't mean that much to me with Jewel. As long as its beautiful and amazing music, and Jewel is happy and making it in life, the other things are just nice little extras. My two cents!
