[Stephen Hallowes Subject: [EDA] today show For the people that asked - the Today Show summer concert series is that thing that huge superstars do as part of the promotion to launch their CD's. It's like a mini-concert outdoors outside the NBC studios. Usually tons of people come down and watch them. Jewel was supposed to do one in July of 99 when she was touring behind Spirit, but JFK Jr. died and they cancelled it. Anyway - just to be clear - yes, it is a pretty big deal. This *could* be a sign that Atlantic/the J-Team are planning to go all out to promote this new record. That obviously depends on what else they do. I don't think it's even a matter of how big the list has gotten, it's just how we treat each other. Unless it's only about Jewel, it's not about her clothing, it's not about a DVD, and it's not about personal ideas, we're okay with it. But don't, whatever you do, but in your personal dislikes of anything she's ever done. Don't say "Wow I loved what Jewel was wearing but wow, did you see *so'n'so pop star not jewel*? She was pretty great too!" Don't dislike anything Jewel does, but don't love her too much because both of those things will get you hated. The fans just seem very different now. I don't remember how long I've been on the list, but it's been quite a few years. I'm certainly not an elder here, but I've been around awhile, and I actually remember when we were nice to each other. When we talked about beach cleanups and our personal insights on a song's meaning without being flamed for seeing it differently. I don't know, it's just very different now. I used to feel like we were a family, like I wanted to host a LRC and I would have loved to have some of you stay the night in my house or go out with a big group and get some food at a cheap restaurant late at night. I used to feel like even if I didn't know someone on the list, I could email them and say "You know what, I'm going to be in the town you live in on such and such a day, you want to grab some food and a movie?" and they'd probably be cool with it. There used to be a trust and understanding, and a common bond between us that seemed like more than just "Hey, I like Jewel too." I don't know, but I think we lost it. What do youwant to see/hear there? Well - as long as they're actually looking for input on what to provide on the enhanced portion of the CD.... Primarily, all that I would ask for is that it have a bit more than the standard link to a website, screensavers and wallpapers that so many CDs have these days. That's become so boring that I don't even put most CDs in the computer anymore. It used to be that I saw enhanced CD on the sticker for a new release and I was excited to see what was on it. I just want to be excited by the content that I see on the monitor for once. I'm not sure what that would be off the top of my head. Maybe some footage and video interviews pertaining to the production and growth of the new album. Perhaps from different vantage points - Jewel's, Lester's, the band's. Also - - how involved has her band been in the recording process? We've heard nothing about them throughout the process. But, we also haven't had much news of them doing other things. So, the assumption is that we will see the same band on tour. But, will we hear them on the album as well? Have they had input in the writing and growth of the songs on the album? One thing that has been gaining popularity recently that seems to be a very good idea is that a lot of artists have been providing links to their sites for fan ticket pre-sales from the enhanced portion of the CD. This gives the fans a heads up on all the sale dates and in most cases, the first crack at the best seats. This of course allows the fans to get access to the best seats while keeping quite a few of them out of the hands of scalpers and brokers. At least, if those people want the same chance at the tickets they have to buy the CD - so it creates some more sales for Jewel as well. But - that's justt my opinion - I could be wrong. As I said, the reason is because it is offering free copies of something that is or was commercially available. The same of course would hold true of anyone trying to sell copies of similar material. Do what you want off-list, but on-list this simply CANNOT be done. It's the same as offering copies of Pieces Of You, Spirit, Ride With The Devil, or non-Jewel material like Jagged Little Pill, The Eminem Story or The Godfather or whatever. It is one of the worst forms of copyright infringement there is and it can and will get people and/or this list into trouble if it is allowed.
