First of all, for all we know a DVD *could* be in the works as we speak, and we just don't know about it. It takes a LONG time to put stuff like that together, particularly if you want it to be high quality. Furthermore, from a record company's point of view, a live DVD is released to cash in on the success of a record. It's almost like putting out action figures to compliment a movie or something. You wouldn't see action figures for a flop, would you? That's why Norah Jones is just releasing one now - she's just won 8 grammys and her record is going to go ballistic in the next few weeks. I'll bet you her record company prepared the DVD to specifically co-incide with the Grammys (because she got so many nominations). Which is not to say Jewel isn't a major artist for Atlantic. To the person who said her record company should worry about artists that are doing better than Jewel - apart from Kid Rock (who has suddenly had a resurgence in sales thanks to the sheryl crow duet), there ARE no artists on Atlantic that do better than Jewel. Jewel is still their #1. I mean name another artist! Matchbox 20's record isn't doing huge, Brandy didn't do huge beyond the first single, Hootie and the Blowfish died out years ago.... who else do they have? Fat Joe? Nappy Roots? Sorry, but these guys are all way more marginal than Jewel. Atlantic ARE focusing on breaking new talent like The Donnas.... but still, Jewel is the.... well, Jewel in their crown... excuse the pun. Plus the president of the label was the A&R guy that signed her, and supported her from the very beginning (part of the reason he IS president of the label)... so she will ALWAYS have his support. Anyway... I'm getting off track here. What I'm saying is... if This Way were still on the charts and they were still milking singles out of it (ala - Pink's album, Kid Rock's album, Avril Lavigne's album and others that have had a long run on the charts)... then a DVD release would be wise because it would act as a companion to an album already doing well. I mean it would make sense because if an album is still selling after over a year, then obviously there's still interest in material from that album.... but fans would definitely be hungry for something new... and a DVD fits that bill entirely. But the fact is, This Way is finished as an album... so if a DVD was released now it'd probably be ignored by the majority of the public, the same way "Jewel: A Life Uncommon" was ignored. When that was released, Spirit had died as well.... and look what happened? That video wasn't even available in most of the shops... it's only available online from Jewel's store. And I bet it only really sold to big fans, and not to any huge percentage of the buying public. I doubt they want to make that mistake again. wow this email is long. I'll stop now. As most (if not all) of you know, there was a vote on MTV2 to choose who has the greatest voice of MTV's 22 years. Jewel was one of them and in the end it was for a show counting down to number 1. So, anyway, here are the days that it'll air: Saturday, March 15th at 2:00 pm Sunday, March 16th at 9:00 am Sunday, March 16th at 7:00 pm I'm really wondering what number Jewel will be, but just that she's on the list is good enough for me, don't yall agree :) Angel Eyes 0:) The most personalized portal on the Web! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Mar 2003 19:05:26 +0800 From: "Peter Cooper" Subject: Re:[EDA] Jewel's new CD I personally would love to see Jewel being able to be placed back into mainstream radio play, and I hope that we see this with the new CD!!. I think that perhaps a lot of the reason that she is not so "popular" for want of a better term these days is because a lot of her songs have lyrics that are perhaps too "deep and meaningful" for a lot of the record buying public which to be honest is of a majority teenagers. Now I am not saying that teenagers cannot be deep and meaningful nor appreciate that type of strong lyric driven music(I work with teenagers evry day and know just how deep some of them have the capacity to be),but I think that Jewel's appeal back in the POY days was that her lyrics in the songs that became hits were a little less complicated, could be taken at face value and expressed emotions that are easily accessible to teenagers...however many of her songs on her other CD's needed time to read between the lines to fully appreciate the message to be found in each song. of course that is not to say that many of her older fans didn't appreciate much of her ealrier work for it's simplicity and refreshing honesty. So basically I guess what I am trying to express is that I hope her new CD allows her to increase her fan base and maybe allow her to be recognised both by "the media" and those that have categorised her into the "folk singer" pigeon hole as the truly talented artist that she is. Among many others, James Brogdon offered for trade: >VHS Jewel Kilcher-1 Sessions at West 54th St. (Christmas) >VHS Jewel Kilcher-9 Wizard of Oz in Concert 1995/11/05 85min I just need to remind all that offering for trade any Jewel material that is directly available commercially is taboo on this list and I ask that all of you realize this and refrain from offering it. Both of those shows above (even though shown occasionally on public TV) are for sale legally and thus offering copies is construed as piracy. It's really no different than offering copies of Pieces Of You, Spirit, This Way or Joy-A Holiday Collection for trade. Okay for those of you not familiar with colloquial American English, we tend to butcher the English language a great deal. "Artsy": artistic. "and Shit": This is harder to describe. People (especially in Texas where I live) tend to use this phrase as a person, place, or thing. It also can be used as "etc" or to end a sentence like punctuation. Consider the following conversation: Joe: "Say Bob, what did you do this weekend?" Bob: "I went to the movies and shit." Joe: "What did you see? How was it?" Bob: "I saw so and so. It was okay and shit. What did you do?" Joe: "I cleaned up my garage and shit." In Jewel's case I think she meant it to be "artistic and stuff". Let me say that "Artsy and Shit" would make a great title even if Jewel was joking. The title says so much about her. She's saying the album would be artistic (which we would all agree), and also she's not always serious. What is the meaning of Artsy and Shit?? I was just wondering around and found some sentences using this expression (yeah, I think it is an expression). >> My one recomendation would be to simplefy the first two songs and stop trying to be all artsy and shit. >> I think I'm gonna do some kind of photo thing with the top in the header and the rest of it in the footer...you know, all artsy and shit. >> i cut my hair. yeah. black and white. all artsy and shit. >> some weird psychological dramatic reading, very artsy and shit. hmm... does it mean something like "artsy and stuff"?? Or something that's pure crap but is considered art??? I'm kinda liking this title now. Fabio - ------------------------------ Yahoo! Jewel is my artist that i always respect. Her success for atlantic record is quite phenomenal. No other artist have given atlantic record such credits as jewel!! !I am sure that Jewel is that kind of artist that always touch her succes in gold. She is fortunate enough to say that she worked for all the hard success!! only blue skies are for free, and jewel certainly has done more than just being pretty. her hard work during her early stages gave her the respect that we all have now. and her new record will spinn with a lot of cool songs which we all will enjoy! the more it come close to the special moment, the better it can get. Jewel always has a master plan, and that masterplan is releasing a more upbeat record, and i am sure it will contain some nice beats, but also some songs that we have to feel comfortable with jewel! no doubt that jewel always have been very lyricdriven song writing , so we will soon see what this will bring for us fans. I am sure that jewel always shine for you and me , that is one thing i am very positive about. Jewel shares the songs, the passion with her fans. I think the record will reflect a relaxed jewel with spectaculair songs. the record will not be like any record so far. Jewel told us that the lyrics says it all, i am also quite honest how the little instruments and the intros to the songs would be !! and what kind of work lester mendez would have brought to jewel!! bye michiel ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Mar 2003 20:31:46 +0100 From: "Michiel" Subject: [EDA] one love........ hello Jewelfans, I will always support Jewel!
