A person may do whatever she wants with an unpublished work, including dedicating it to the public without copyright protection. Jewel, however, has protected her works -- both recorded and unrecorded - -- with copyright protection under the laws of the U.S. and under international copyright treaties, and she has licensed her work to others, including her music publisher and her record label, who in the past have protected their interests through legal action. You of course may disagree with me, and you are free to do whatever you want (at your own risk), but I would not want this list to be jeopardized by anyone thinking that there are not legal repercussions to what you are suggesting. - -=-Larry-=- "Kovacs, Mirinda" wrote: > > If it's never been put on any format then how can it be copyrighted? The most famous tunes like Hands, Foolish Games, Who will save your soul, Absence of Fear and down so long are covered. The cd is artistic, and creative and inspiring to jewel! It is released That CD sounds really interesting, I downloaded some clips. Michiel, you must of copied the address wrong, so for those of you who had trouble, heres the address again: http://www.vitaminrecords.com/moreinfo.asp?cd_cat=8686#title I noticed the playlist on the site calls "Absence of Fear" "Absence of Years." I hope they didn't list it as that on the actual cd. If youre doing a tribute to someone you might as well get the songs right! The music clips I checked out are really good guys(the standing still clip is only 5 seconds long, but Down So Long gives a good idea of what the music is like), but is this underground music? Is it violating any copyrights? Im not familiar with this stuff so someone enlighten me. I never heard any announcements about it anywhere, and Im sure the Jewel team would acknowledge such a tribute. I heard that during Jewelstock Jewel did several songs with her band? I've seen setlists as well. But I have never seen any angelfood containing them, they seem to be cut out. I know theyre there, because during my copy, I hear her say "Id like to bring out my band.." and then it just cuts out to the solo song which followed the band set. How come there isn't any angelfood out there with the band? If there is someone who has it, let me know. Another silly question, Ive seen a couple sites with Jewelstock pictures, and Jewel is wearing 3 different outfits... Since there were only 2 shows over the two days in which it was held, how often does Jewel change clothes on stage? Just something I noticed... They mix nice uptempo cello play and violin play. It is dynamic, and really gives a wonderful feeling while you are sitting on your couch and when you chill it is making you perfectly happy! How come there >isn't any angelfood out there with the band? If there is someone who has >it, let me know. The songs she did with the band those nights were not on the JewelStock tapes due to, in a nutshell, the strong likelyhood that the material (high quality and non-POY) would have ended up on a bootleg CD and the songs were at the time definite possibilities for the (never released) Fritz Creek Store album. At the time Jewel was still a relative unknown, although Who Will Save Your Soul was still a chart climber and top 10. As a relative unknown, but up & comer, bootleg CDs were coming out quite often then and the J-team just couldn't see virtually handing the bootleggers material that would make them $$$ on material Jewel hadn't even released yet. There's more issues, including issues that prevent us from being able to tree that material even today, but that's the nuts & bolts of it. >Another silly question, Ive seen a couple sites with Jewelstock pictures, >and Jewel is wearing 3 different outfits... Since there were only 2 shows >over the two days in which it was held, how often does Jewel change >clothes on stage? Just something I noticed... She didn't change clothes at JewelStock. Night one was dress-down. She went totally for comfort. When she noticed her top shirt had a huge hole in the armpit (and showed it to us), she took off that shirt and went with the shirt that was beneath it. Night two was just one outfit, unchanged throughout the show. Mike ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Jan 2003 19:11:22 -0500 From: Mike Connell Subject: RE: [EDA] Copyright stuff... It was the two days after the Radio Shack concert. He had a master tape of the show (as he is her audio/video archivist). I got to see him do his job. One of the many responsibilities he has with each show is to catalog it and, if there is any new material or dramatically revised material, he had to transcribe the lyrics and make a few CDs of each piece of new material to send it off to Atlantic Records so they could do their magic, including copyrighting it. They also copyright her material in other ways, but I just wanted to present that to show you one way how and why non-released material is copyrighted.
