Since first climbing the music charts in 1995 with the release of "Pieces of You," now Jewel - who made her acting debut in Ang Lee's 1999 "Ride With the Devil" - has been an inspiration for other young female artists, like Vanessa Carlton (who, like Jewel, is a sensitive singer-songwriter) and R&B star Ashanti (who, like Jewel, has published a book of poetry). After moving to the lower 48 from her native Alaska, the blonde-haired beauty struggled for a time, living in a van and performing in small coffeehouses. Her first album - which spawned the hit singles "You Were Meant for Me," "Who Will Save Your Soul?" and "Foolish Games" - spent 114 weeks on the Billboard 200. But Jewel had no interest in joining Britney Spears, Shakira and Mary J. Blige on the cover of Rolling Stone's recent "Women in Rock" issue. "I would have looked silly," she told Steppin' Out magazine. "The cover just doesn't have the integrity to be called a 'Women in Rock' issue. When Chrissie Hynde looks at that cover, does she laugh? Probably!" Jewel - who has been compared to rock legend Joni Mitchell -prefers to spend her downtime horseback riding with her boyfriend, rodeo legend Ty Murray. She describes her most recent record, "This Way," as "eclectic - it's rock 'n' roll, lyric-driven, diverse." She is currently working on a new album for release in July, as well as a new collection of love poems. (Her two previous books, "A Night Without Armor" and "Chasing Down the Dawn," both sold well.) She also hopes to act again and has started her own movie production company. Q: Describe your personal style. A: I'm pretty whimsical. I'm a Gemini, so one day you'll see me in jeans and a T-shirt and the next day you'll see me in Roberto Cavalli leather pants and killer boots. Q: Favorite designers? A: I like Allen B. jeans a lot. And Jimmy Choo has some high-heeled cowgirl boots out right now that I adore. Q: What do you wear for a big night out? A: Last night I went out and I wore a wife beater, a plain blue skirt, high leather boots and a Roberto Cavalli bright blue leather jacket. Q: What do you wear when relaxing? A: At home, I wear Wranglers and cowgirl boots and button-up shirts and belts to go riding in. Or just really comfy pants and T-shirts. Q: How do you take care of yourself? A: I really like growing up, and I like getting older. I get along with my body better. I really don't have to try very hard. It's been pretty easy. Q: Secret weakness? A: Lingerie is a big weakness of mine. It's so expensive, but I love it and I'm always buying it. Q: Do you follow a special diet? A: Dairy products are bad for my throat. I don't eat a lot of red meat. And I hate chicken. I saw that special new diet for Americans, and it talks about all the cancers in chicken, and that grosses me out. Q: Favorite beauty products? A: I've been using fresh oils on my skin. Fresh vitamin E oils or oil complexes. Q: What do you love to see men wear? A: My boyfriend looks righteous in a pair of Wranglers. Q: What was your last splurge? A: I bought a pair of cowgirl boots with the American Flag up the side - they're really tacky and great. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Dec 2002 22:20:51 EST From: W1GGY2@aol.com Subject: [EDA] A Mr. BB Weekend Hey, guys, This weekend was a lot of fun. Drove up to Alan & Amy Jo's (aka Mr. & Mrs. BB) and helped to log all the Jason Mraz sets from the Jewel tour. The setlists should now be available for your viewing pleasure somewhere on either Jewel's site or Soul City Cafe, not sure which. I also got to watch some awesome videos of the shows. I really hope at least some of the footage gets up on a website or something because Jason & crew were smokin'! We also watched an old video that Lenedra recorded of the last performance of the original Rugburns (with Rob Driscoll, Steve, Stinky & Greg Page) before they broke up with special guest Jewel. It was recorded a few months before JewelStock. Steve's hair was long with 2 wide platinum streaks running down it and Jewel was so giddy she was dancing and jumping all around the stage. It was really great to see the old Jewel again (or should I say the young Jewel - hehe). And for anyone who's met the BB's psycho-cat Mouse, she's still psycho as ever. And though she no longer hisses when you say the name Janet Peckinpaw, she still pretends to be your friend and then viciously attacks you out of the blue. Of course, it would be a lot MORE vicious if she had claws. But thank goodness for small favors! Amy N. PS - If anyone has recordings of any of the Jason Mraz sets from the Jewel tour I'd love to work out a trade. I have good stuffs to offer. :-) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Dec 2002 22:28:36 -0500 From: "Sandy" Subject: Re: [EDA]- re: ANWA > One more thing I was reading the sleeve of the new silverchair album and > they mentioned how the album was made without using some software ( I don't > remember the name) pitch software or the like. Anywho they said that it is > software that corrects the pitch of the recording and they believe it ruins > the feel. Does anyone know if Jewel does or doesn't use this software?. Just > curious. the software they were probably referring to is antari, it's used to slightly correct pitch in a singers voice, or it can be used to drastically change it, ie. in Cher's "Believe". I wouldn't say for sure that she uses it or not, but it wouldn't surprise me as I think most artists do (even without their knowledge if they aren't that involved with the production on their albums). I could care less either way what a person uses in the studio, as long as they can reproduce it in person at a concert (there's nothing to ruin your love of an artist then when you see them live and they don't measure up because it was all studio magic), and Jewel sure as hell can :) ~ Sandy ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Dec 2002 22:39:27 -0500 From: "Sandy" Subject: Re: [EDA] RE: The Dirty behind SCC contests. SELL OUT > SHOW ME THE MONEY!!! HO! Its all about the Money.....Jewel is no fool. And is that wrong? Or >just Smart? She has sold out somewhat, but i believe lots of artist do that. Her Christmas album is one >great example. Put Classic Christmas songs on there, when you don't even believe in Jesus. These songs >touch people, they like them, and jewel is $$$$ on them. I don't agree with that, but in this Capitalist >society we live in, its all about the Money. Which is sad. I want to see Jewel and others sing about what >they believe in, what they are passionate about. Not just put some tracks together that will make them >money. Which by exploiting Jesus Christ like this, Jewel has done..... She is a spiritual person, but is not a >Christian, from what we have learned. > I still Love Jewel, and her talent, and her music..... But just a little sad she is not as true as i thought.... I don't think it has much to do with being "true". I love singing classic Christmas songs, and I'm not Christian either. To me, it's just another part of the Christmas season. Heck, isn't anyone who celebrates Christmas and not Christian technically not being true? I think the problem here isn't that Jewel isn't true, I think it's that Christmas is by far viewed mostly as a commericial holiday now, rather than celebrating the birth of christ, which is sad, but true. Then again, the reason I celebrate Christmas isn't for either reason... it's because it's CHRISTMAS! and in a long dreary winter, it's the one thing you can look forward to despite what your beliefs might be, or how much money you have to spend on gifts. It's about being with your family and being thankful for them. It's about forgetting whatever diet you may be on, and whatever reason you're mad at your sister, and gathering around a big table and stuffing yourself with turkey and gravy and mashed potatoes. and because Christmas music is playing in every damn store all christmas long, it's natural to associate it with the holiday and have fun going out to christmas tree lightings and being with your family, and singing along... I don't think that Jewel so much put the album together to make money (well obvious that was part of the reason, that is the business, but every christian person who puts together a christmas album has the same goal as well) but I think one of her main reasons is the same reason the people who aren't christian sing along... because it's just one of those things that come with Christmas, a lot of them are *beautiful* songs, and a chance for her to showcase her voice in a different way, and because she wants people to enjoy them. If Jewel is a sell out for making a christmas album, so is every other artists, christian or not, who does, because they're all making money off of it too. ~ Sandy ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Dec 2002 03:51:33 +0000 From: "Lauren Bennett" Subject: [EDA] sellout thing I don't post very often, I usualy sit back and reald everyones responses. I had to respond to this post. How do you know that Jewel is not a Christain? Have you met her? If you did did she pour out her spirituality on you? By the way Jewel probaly did not make a Christmas album to make her some money. In interviews she said that she wanted to make one and she had fun doing it. Since when does everything have to be about money with Jewel? And how is it exploiting Jesus Christ when she sings christmas songs? Does that mean that no one can sing Christmas songs unless they are Christains? Also if you haven't notice Jewel does sing with passion and about what she belives in. She stays true to herself. She does belive in something cause she makes seeral references to God even if it is not the same one you believe in. Plus no one is making you listen to her music or even be on this list. If you think that Jewel is suce a sell out and a horriable person then why do you listen to her? I can't stand ignorant people. I do not think that anyone of this list (unless they are close to Jewel) have the right to say what she belives in or thinks. I'm sorry ya'll I went on a rant but it hurts when your absolute favorite artist has been attacked. :) Lauren _________________________________________________________________ Help STOP SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Dec 2002 23:10:09 EST From: Dave0828@aol.com Subject: Re: [EDA] sellout thing Right on!
