They told me I was entered into a Sweepsteaks and I could win 5,000 dollars. So being a broke college student, I fell for it. In return, they subscribed me to 4 magazines each month for 4 years. I would get a free diamond watch. I ordered the magazines without really thinking, gave them my credit card number. And it was done. They called me today and I got them to lower the price. Now it's down to 33.99. But I have to call them and my bank tomorrow. Just a warning to gullable people like me. Especially college students. These people act VERY cheery and nice. Don't fall for it! It's not "not only American" because it's NOT American. It has nothing to do with America other than the fact that the movies are funded by an American production company. The books were written by a Brit in Britain and originally published in England. The movies are shot in England with a British cast. There's nothing American about them. In fact for some stupid, bizarre reason the title of the first book/movie had to be changed from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Why is it that in every country other than America, the population are capable of comprehending the word "philosopher". Curious. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 06 Dec 2002 05:21:35 -0500 From: Mike Connell Subject: NJC: Re: [EDA] harry potter is british, not american (re: that bean thing) At 04:42 AM 12/6/2002, Fredsteve@aol.com wrote: >Harry Potter, the book, is British. Trust me, I know the boos and film are British. I was talking about the actual jelly beans. They are made in America. I was just alluding to that old line from some movie when something outrageous was made and the characters had said "only in America" (i.e. Only in America would someone make something like this). Yes, it is a British film and book, but I mean that "only in America would they make a vomit flavored jelly bean". I may not be 100% right in that, maybe some company in Portugal, New Zealand or England might make a vomit flavored jelly bean but that's why I used that line. (not to mention that the way my post was worded It should have either been clear or at least given a benefit of a doubt.) Didn't mean to create an international uproar, especially when people read something the way they wanted to read it and not the way it was written, Mike ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 06 Dec 2002 22:52:20 +1100 From: "~* Venus Aphrodite*~" Subject: [EDA]- Prayers Needed hi all!, I know there are a lot of people who need prayers right now. But I ask you all to keep those poor people in Sydney (and other areas of NSW, Australia)in yours. It's that time of year again that many Australians dread. Not only is our country enduring the worst drought for a very long time, but NSW is being cursed with the worst bushfires in 30 odd years. I now live in Queensland, but my sister and her family were all packed just in case (it's as close to my family as I'd like). As the estate they live in were struck by fires on Wednesday. The fires are getting closer to Sydney CDB and many more keep sparking up. The most disgusting thing is that many of these fires are diliberatly lit. (Including the one near my sister). Worst part is the law can't do anything unless they catch these bastards in the act. Being so close to Christmas, many homes have already been lost and with water restrictions in most areas of the country these fires fuelled by up 70KM/H winds will continue and rain is a distant memory. Firefighters truly are an amazing breed of people. Especially the volunteers. So in your EDA prayers think too of the people of NSW (and other states) over our summer months. Maybe it is just me, who knows. I feel that some people on this list have no etiquette. When you post to a list and ask for replies it is nice to get acknowledgment of that reply. I will give an example. Whoever it was who posted about a month ago asking for quotes to be e-mailed to them. I actually took a great deal of time in typing up lots of my favorite quotes. In the message I stated that I would like to know my message was received and that I would like to be copied all the other quotes sent their way. I love to collect good quotes. Well I never heard anything from that person. Not even a thank you for taking the time to type that, nothing! Secondly there was a girl who wrote to the list saying that her mom has just been diagnosed with cancer. My mother recently died from that terrible disease. I wrote a nice letter to her and have yet to hear one peep out of her. I could go on but I don't have the time right now (busy day at work). I was just wondering if it is common practice for the people on this list to ignore you. Or maybe it is just that my name isn't recognized because I am not an every day poster. Who knows. Sorry for the gripe I just had to get that off of my chest. I hope that everyone has a great Friday! Thats a great idea for a cover song, I think she could do it really well. But would she be emulating Janis Joplin or doing it more her style? And what exactly is Jewel's style? Shes too eclectic for me to decide on that lol A cover song is wonderful, but a song she wrote herself would be better anyday ;P But we already get those anyway dont we? And what am I babbling about? I'm really tired tonight, as usual, sorry! Mark _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your e-mail with MSN 8. This is my usual response to this particular thread whenever it comes up. While most are choosing a song that takes advantage to show off her voice & strengths, I'm going a slightly different route and selecting a song that would be a fun song for her to do with Steve Poltz, and one that I think could climb the charts if they did it. I'd kill to have her and Steve Poltz record and release a cover of Sonny & Cher's "The Beat Goes On". There's no doubt in my mind that if produced and arranged right, it could be a hit. They each have the perfect inflections/voices/styles to both channel the Sonny & Cher version AND give it a Jewel/Poltz identity of its' own at the same time. I also think she'd have a blast doing it. I know there's no official word on the date for actual recording let alone release of Jewel's next album but I think that closer to production time they should offer Jewel fans an opportunity to gain access to the album via a pre-sale.. You know, gaurantee I'll get my album on the Tuesday it is released (new material is usually released on Tuesdays) and I'll pay an extra $1 or two just to buy it direct from Jewel instead of going to a superstore to get it right at midnight... Just a thought, but maybe someone out there in la-la land will consider it.
