I thought the column was interesting and all but I think it was pushing it
calling This Way a commercial failure. The album went platnium, yes that is a
drop from previous album sales, but it's far from failure. She sure made her
money off of it with a near-sold out tour. If you want to point out
commerical failures, go talk about Mariah and her 450,000 of Glitter. Times
change, so do peoples taste in music. Not ever CD will sell 11 million
copies.

Subject: [EDA] Linda Perry

I have to say I'm happy to hear Linda Perry is gonna be working on Jewel's album. I definitely think Jewel knows how to be raw with her voice, and I'm sure Linda Perry is very aware of that... but if you look at Jewel's records, apart from parts of This Way... it's been pretty restrained vocally. You certainly don't get the same vocal moments on the album that you get live. Love Me Just Leave Me Alone is the exception, but apart from that Jewel's records haven't featured that side of her voice much. Actually.. the other exception is Sweet Home Alabama........ I personally thought they did a great job on that song. One of my favourite Jewel vocal performances yet.

And for those worried about the songs being cheesy... I doubt Jewel will "co-write" the lyrics or the melodies. In the past it's just been the music. Jewel is a good songwriter, but she hasn't got a wide range of skills musically - she plays guitar and that's about it. Hence, a lot of her songs have the same musical sensibility. I think she's just trying to change that.

Anyway - I can't wait for the new record. I love experimentation. And for those of you who don't - you have an acoustic album to look forward to after that!

I think I will always be a Jewel fan no matter what! She kicks ass!! I
love the version of LMJLMA on This Way, but I think she sort of holds
back on the screaming and stuff on it. I like SHA too, but she holds
back way too much on it. It would have been better with her screaming
and stuff. Anyway,, I can't wait til the new album. When is it suppose
to come out?? Also, has Jewel performed any new songs at recent shows?

Michiel, you are incredibly lucky to be able to experience all of this, if
it is true! Just to see Jewel from a distance one time would be such a dream
come true, and you've been invited on stage 4 times!
How do you manage to follow her tour?? Are you incredibly rich? It costs
thousands to go all over the world to see this. If you really do all of
this, you truely are her biggest fan. I'm probably second ;x.
I think about and listen to Jewel non-stop! I'm more obsessed than anyone!
ok!

From: Dave0828@aol.com
Subject: [EDA] Dave's Tour Wrap Up - (as promised)

Alright, it's been a week since the tour has ended. I've had enough time to
recover from what was the month of November and get my thoughts together.
Remarkably, I've had no serious withdrawl symptoms.

Newark - 11/13
I had to wait for everything to calm down regarding this before including it
in my highlights. But, I thought that what happened was simply that she
decided the NYC area crowd could handle a harsher punchline. Meanwhile, she
needs to consult New York area coaches about what the media in the area is
like. Let's not have this set off a new batch of comments. You will however
get the opportunity to see how this evolved through the end of the tour...

SUNY Purchase - 11/14
She was visibly and audibly upset at something at this show. Speculation was
that she was deflecting press over her comments from the night before. She
also apologized. This was the first show that she had ever been late for as
she came out about 20 minutes late. She turned down requests for noted sad
songs such as 'Violet Eyes' with a comment of -- 'I'm trying to not cry as it
is.'
Her emotions came out several times - notably during Foolish Games as well as
one particular belted out note during You Were Meant For Me.
During her SCC talk she said - 'Man, I needed this show' - obviously feeling
better.

Lowell, MA - 11/15
She pushed the Dylan thing a bit more - almost mockingly with a nanny nanny
boo boo type tone of voice, as if to say - this is the most absurd big deal
the media has made of me in a long time and I'm going to push the envelope
until everyone else realizes how stupid this is. Personally, I thought this
was very cool.

Atlantic City - 11/16
She was at it again tonight admonishing people for their cell phones ringing.
But, the best was when she actually stopped Just Passing Time and said that
if that was boring everyone maybe she would play something else - and, she
did. I think that this got everyone's attention.
She was not deterred on the whole Dylan Story thing. She even worked it into
the Mexico / Federale story. It was a very funny moment.
The setlist included:
Dolphin & Wolf
Grey Matter
Angel (Cowboy Waltz)
Carnivore
Violet Eyes - ALL in the same night!!!

Washington DC - 11/17
She closed this show with a very cool duet with Jason Mraz doing Who Will
Save Your Soul. He took a verse - and pretended to improvise. Of course if
you've seen Jason enough times you recognized quite a few of his rhymes from
other 'improv work'. But, it was a great song with him included nonetheless.
This was also a rare night because she gave us a bit of poetry with Miracle
before Chime Bells - this was by a relative of her's request.
(as a side note I was surprised at the seating that her local family had for
that night - Constitution Hall is obviously not as accommodating as Wolf Trap
(another local venue) - when she played Wolf Trap the venue had held front
row seats for her family - tonight they were pretty far back).

Bloomington - 11/21
She wore an outfit tonight not seen on the rest of the tour. She had just
flown in from NYC (the Save the Music benefit appearance was the night
before). She must have had it on there and not taken the time to change.
After all, she still had one of her hats on that she notoriously likes to
wear in public and keep her hair up in. The rest of the ensemble included a
black leather jacket and black leather boots that went over the knees and a
red dress that came down to the knees.
Her chatter on this particular night was in rare form as well. She said that
she felt punch drunk from sleep deprivation. Then she went into the Dylan
thing - exasperated over the press coverage. She told the story and let the
audience give the punchline.
Later she told a story about a certain fashion company that hired her as a
spokesperson - they insisted that they wanted her just the way she is - later
she discovered that they fixed her teeth for the pictures.
This show was interrupted by delightful candid comments all night long. It
was very entertaining.

Louisville - 11/22
Jewel did not play Sometimes it be That Way at this show. So, there was no
Dylan Story at all. Some of the band was up from Nashville - if you kept an
eye out you could catch Mark and T-Bone. Stuart opened the last four nights
after Jason left for his own tour following the DC show. If you can catch
Stuart on his own he's VERY good live.

Merrillville IN - 11/23
She played Sometimes it be That Way tonight. With NO story to introduce the
song. She had Emily requested yet again. The whole tour she said that she had
forgotten how to play it. She tried to remember it on the spot. But, finally
decided not to half ass it - then promised to play it the next night.
Also, she was extremely gracious tonight. She answered many fans questions
about how her career is shaping up and signed no less than 50 and probably
more like 100 autographs.
She also played Angel Standing By after Chime Bells.
I'm not sure exactly how - but, this show went 20 minutes longer than the res
t.

Akron, OH - 11/24
Who knew that in the middle of Akron Ohio was the Civic Theatre and that this
would be one of the most beautiful halls that there is? Jewel even felt
compelled to comment on it - twice.
She held up her end of last night's promise and did play Emily - it was
great!
Then she followed that up by giving the crowd a choice between Carnivore and
Everything Breaks - Carnivore won. And to complete the very nice Back to Back
to Back she played Boy Needs a Bike.
She had a great telling of the injury story with a lot of funny details
previously left out (funny now - I assume not as funny then). She had no
Dylan story - and no Federale story.
She did however evoke visions of the band tour when she invited Stuart out
for a duet of Who Will Save Your Soul. She tried to get him to take a verse -
he wouldn't. He did take a guitar pick of her stand to which she offered -
'you do still need me'. They dueled back and forth his guitar to her voice
just as they had done over the summer on the band tour. What a moment!!

Well, that's most of the why and the how of it as far as wrapping up this leg
of the tour, as well as the tour itself. I met a lot of great people -
hopefully they don't all lose my e-mail address. You all know who you are.
I hope that you guys enjoyed my accounts of the highlights that you normally
can't get from the posted setlists.
Hope to meet even more of you next time.

By the way - I also got plenty of nice recordings that I'm still in the
process of cleaning up. I DO NOT have Akron - anybody?
Let me know what you have to trade - and sometime between now and New Year's
hopefully we can get some trades worked out.

Later,
Dave

Oh, the tragedy! Who in the world comes to San Antonio, TX? No one
(usually) outside of pop groups that are hitting every city in America.
I've seen Jewel twice (once in Vegas, once in Austin) but never in my
home town. I'll be transferring colleges to Middle-of-Nowhere, Ohio at
the end of January. The San Antonio show is in February.

Wonderful timing I have lately. Kay. I'm done complaining. For those who
go, ENJOY THE SHOW! : - ) I'll be there in spirit!

***JEWEL'S TOUR SECTION UPDATES

As we continue our final week of activity at Jewel's Tour Section, we have
a new batch of photos for you. This week we are featuring a mix of images
from our adventures in Connecticut, New York and Massachusetts.

Stuart Mathis blew This Way Tour audiences away with his incredible guitar
work, taking soaring leads and adding rich textures with slide or cool Old
School effects. He went on to charm the intimate audiences of Jewel's solo
acoustic shows, whether playing his own sweetly crafted songs or Led Zep
riffs on a banjo. An artist of depth and soul, he recently took the time
to tell us what it's like opening for Jewel and what's next for Stuart
Mathis. Check out this exclusive new interview in the Tour Section of
www.jeweljk.com. After that, hop on over to Soul City Cafe to hear some
exclusive new live recordings from his SCC opener sets for Jewel last

***NOTES FROM MrBB

Hi All,
Dropping in to clarify Jewel's near-future plans and dispel a few
rumors. This month, Jewel will continue writing new material and
experimentally collaborating as preproduction for her next album. Contrary
to several reports, she has not chosen anyone to produce or coproduce as
of yet, but will make those decisions in coming weeks with album
production beginning early next year.
Several tentative release dates have also been mentioned in the press,
but they are nothing more than speculation at this early stage. You can
count on a new Jewel album in 2003, but it's too early to suggest a
release date.
We are also getting quite a bit of mail regarding January touring plans.
Jewel does not plan to tour in January. She'll be working on her album,
other than a few one-off events. The best way to keep up on accurate
information is to stick with us. We'll certainly keep you up on the latest
developments with plenty of time to spare. It's also a good idea to check
the www.jeweljk.com calendar page often, as it will always have the latest
scheduling info.
Also, before I sign off, I'd like to ask you all to help us spread the
word about the Soul City Cafe Music Quest contest. Give the Arts and
Entertainment Editor at your local newspaper a call and tell them you have
a PR piece about a contest with the winner opening for Jewel. They will
probably be interested. Any help you can provide us in spreading the word
would be greatly appreciated!
Hey, and don't forget to share the contest with friends who are talented
musicians. You wouldn't want them to miss out on a chance for great
exposure now would you? (The link and info is noted below)
And if you've yet to visit SCC, please do so! There's a great bunch of
folks already there and we'd welcome more of you. Become an "Insider" and
enjoy our message boards, helping with future plans as well as additional
exclusive tour clips and more. We have a lot of great plans for 2003 and
we invite you to be part of them.

Hope to see you there and be back to you soon,	MrBB
