That introduced Allison to countless Jewel fans and EDAs, a gift for which she and I (her manager) are extremely grateful ( : It's been a huge year for Alley - writing, touring and recording. Her debut full-length album, "midnight syren", was recorded just before we went on a cross-Canada tour this past summer. At the same time, we entered into partnership with Jack Ponti, the U.S. based manager who has most recently nurtured India.Arie to success. The album's release is on hold 'til 2003 while we weigh the options of going with a U.S. major label, or remaining independent. (It's a complicated business!) Next year, we'll be back on the road, across Canada, and doing dates in the U.S. as well. (And, one day, we'll visit Europe and the rest of the world.) On this weekend, when many are giving thanks, it seems fitting to acknowledge how grateful we are for what Jewel, Mr BB, and the whole J-team are doing to create a community for musicians outside the mainstream. And to thank you all for visiting Alley's site, buying her self-released EP and coming to her shows. We look forward to meeting old friends, and making new ones, in 2003. For people in Canada, there's an one-hour tv special coming up next weekend, called "Allison Crowe: Inside Pandora's Box"; Below is the release that's been sent out by the program's producers - and, it's something we can all be thankful for ( : peace and cheers, Adrian Here's the word sent out by the show's producers: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Inside Pandora's Box goes national December 8 Victoria, BC The New VI's series of interactive, street-level, original productions goes national Sunday, December 8 when CHUM local stations across Canada air Allison Crowe: Inside Pandora's Box. The young pianist / singer / songwriter's extraordinary October 26 performance airs from 10 to 11 pm on The New VI, as well as on Ontario stations The New VR (Barrie), The New RO (Ottawa and the National Capital Region), The New PL (London), The New NX (Wingham), and The New WI (Windsor). With a voice that has been described as "poetic and haunting," "rich and dark," and "preternaturally worldly," 21 year-old mega-talent in the making Allison Crowe - a Nanaimo native - combines "Janis Joplin's ballsy power and Sarah McLachlan's lilting sweetness." She mixes several years of classical piano and voice training and an early love of Beethoven with an assortment of other inspirations: from Led Zeppelin, Adam Duritz (Counting Crows), and Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam) to Ani DiFranco, The Tragically Hip, and Tori Amos. For her Inside Pandora's Box show, Allison performed with bass player Dave Baird and drummer Kevin Clevette. Allison Crowe: Inside Pandora's Box, hosted by Alex Lee, airs Sunday, December 8 at 10 pm on CHUM stations across Canada. Producer Linda Perry plans to give the singer/songwriter a shot of raw energy by Brian Hiatt When producer-of-the-moment Linda Perry worked with Jewel earlier this year, she had no intention of saving the spiritual Alaskan's soul. Instead, Perry says, ''I kicked her in the butt.'' Thanks to that gentle guidance, Jewel gave one of her most intense vocal performances ever on an unlikely version of Lynyrd Skynyrd's ''Sweet Home Alabama,'' which played over the closing credits of the eponymous Reese Witherspoon comedy. Now Perry plans to take the same rock-edged approach as a producer and cowriter on Jewel's next album, with recording sessions set to begin in December. ''I'm really excited about it,'' Perry explains, ''because there was a time when I sat and said, 'Can somebody f---ing kick these girls in the ass and get them to start singing and growling and bringing that edge to their voice?' And somebody heard me.'' Perry, former leader of one-hit-wonders 4 Non Blondes, has revived her career as a producer and songwriter for the likes of Pink (''Like A Pill'') and Christina Aguilera (''Beautiful''). Though Jewel had sole writing credit on all but three of the songs on 1995's solo acoustic ''Pieces of You'' and 1998's pop effort ''Spirit,'' last year's eclectic ''This Way'' -- a commercial disappointment -- found her relying more heavily on cowriters. A spokesperson for Jewel's label, Atlantic, didn't have any information on which other collaborators might appear on Jewel's newest album, or when it might be released. But in any case, Jewel is apparently ready to try something new, says Perry: ''She knows not everything has to sound pretty.'' - -- Scott http://scott.rocket-fish.org/ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Nov 2002 22:49:59 +0100 From: "Michiel - van - Gorkum" Subject: [EDA] your favourite jewel track and why?? hello jewelfans, After a long time of not so interesting stories of me (which i doubt of course) am i asking myself, what is my favourite jewel track performed live and why?? here it goes, i always keep listening to does anyone believe in love, that is really my favourite track. it is incredible song, and it is so beautiful song to hear live. Nothing can stop me from loving jewel and supporting her music! i am forever grateful for all the great things that happened, including the signature of jewel at the santa rosa show in september when she wrote a lovely personal text for me her dutch fan in the a night without armor book in silver pen. all those memories are lovely and i thank jewel for being so inspirational! She also invited me during her first new wild west accoustic tour on stage in saratoga, the place i have seen jewel performing live in 2000 and it relived in my memory in 2002!!! always great to look back on those special memories Michiel ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Nov 2002 18:00:01 -0500 From: "Shana Ward" Subject: [EDA] Recordings of Cleveland and Louisville shows... Maybe Linda can indeed write good songs and maybe she's just been writing these craps to get some money. Maybe Jewel saw that she was truly gifted and she could work well as a partner. Maybe this will help a lot Jewel' singles, because radio seems to love Linda. Maybe she'll just rock out and it'll still totally sound like her. Maybe it'll be just amazing (as always). who knows? What is music, or even more specifically Rock and Roll, without evolution and reinvention? Try listening to quite a few artists current and debut albums (if they are not the same thing). Many of these people in the business sound the same as they did when they were new. Jewel can always play solo acoustic again. But, there's nothing wrong with experimentation. Hell, even Eric Clapton has a techno album. I can't wait to hear what is next. She's already shown vastly evolved and different sides of herself on each album that she has already recorded. And, many of my favorites from This Way had outside help. I'm sure that as an artist she wouldn't be allowing in outside influences that were going to have an adverse effect on her craft. So, I'm going to trust that Jewel is doing what is right for her and look forward to hearing it. We don't even have to like everything that she does. But, so many artists lock up entire projects that they are afraid their fans won't accept. If she wants to experiment with different styles and collaborators let's just respect her for having the balls to do it. If you don't like it, maybe you'll enjoy the next album. But, buckle up - she's not even 30 and she has a lot of room to grow as an artist and musician. I'm looking forward to the ride that's to come. What about you?
