I think that she is doing what she wants. And, if that 'screws up her career' I don't think that she cares. She has the ability and freedom due to her earlier success to do whatever she wants to and never want for anything financially. Besides that, she is doing what she can to aid in the advancement of other songwriters. Watch out, Soul City Cafe is likely to be followed up with her own label. She already has her own small film production company. The record label at this point is the next logical step. Then maybe other singer songwriters can develop under her wing and other record companies will then follow suit after seeing her success. Besides that, yes the setlists can be routine. but thankfully the stories do vary a bit here and there. Personally, I just use the Federale story as a good time to get a drink - go to the restroom - whatever. You've got 10 - 12 minutes to not miss any music. Most people that go to see her don't know that they are getting the same setlist as the night before. And, for travelers like you and myself (who go to multiple shows or legs of each tour) it's the rare night that makes it even more worth while. Check out the Atlantic City setlist when posted to her site. Jewel is going to have to try very hard to bore me. Even when it's the same setlist from night to night there are nights when the emotion behind the singing of her songs goes even deeper than others and the performance can be absolutely riveting. Special - that's the only word to describe a Jewel performance until the English language invents a more adequate one. I can't wait to see what comes next. While I don't doubt Jewel's ability to screw up (she is human after all), she is going to have to try a lot harder than some artists to do anything that tanks her career. Later, Dave ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Nov 2002 17:37:57 -0330 From: "Mark Austin" Subject: Re: [EDA] another newspaper article Here are my comments to that article! Jewel appearing in Maxim: I wish ;( But she is doing things her way, just like she said. Shes not running for prom queen this time, as she said before. It would've been great publicity though. Jewels next album: Sounds good, but I can't wait for the singer-songwriter focused one that comes out after that one. Hope she doesn't change her mind! Turning down Rolling Stone magazine: Avril and Shakira write their own songs.. Shakira is well known in Latin America because of their song writing. Avril is more punk-pop, and Britney.... just isn't rock at all. Seriously. Shakira is kinda rockish I guess. She performs with a band. But still shes more pop than rock. I agree with Jewel for this one, but again, it would've been great publicity ;( In other stuff, This Way has sold the least amount of records than any other album. (1x platinum, Joy was 1x platinum also, but I'm not counting it as it was not all new-material. Spririt was 4x and POY was 11x) I guess its true about not running for prom queen at all. But Jewel is happy, and she is still making great music. However, I really think she should put out Do You Want To Play and then I Won't Walk away as singles. They'd do good on the radio. I Won't Walk away would be a nice closing for the albums run. You don't have to be prom queen Jewel, but you can still milk it for all its worth! (besides splinters?) >What about hugging a Harris on the side of a very busy Houston freeway? >I think we need an EDA based test.. :-) Okay Rowdy, keep your frock on! For an EDA test, how does this criteria sound: 1 point for every EDA you've met face-to-face... international EDAs count double. (starts me at over 1500 points!) 25 points for every time you've cannonballed or bounced a hard object off of a Kilcher family member. 10 points for every EDA you've tucked in bed or woke up at 4 AM. (excludes spouse or significant other) 100 points for surprising an EDA in the shower. 25 points for every EDA you've nailed with a water balloon, laser tag or paintball gun. 50 points for each LRC you've attended. 100 points for being able to name the ENTIRE Harris family (including Rugburns). 100 points for every San Diego musician bootleg that contains profanity directed at you during the performance. 5 points for every EDA autograph you have. 10 points for every legible Jewel autograph you have. 100 points for having a plywood cow with Jewel's name scrawled across his nose. 100 points for having an email address for your plywood cow. Add 100 points if you bought it a web domain. 50 points for every time you've been pulled over by local police or security in conjunction with a Jewel show or EDA related event. 10 points for every Jewel photo you took that was actually in focus and recognizable as Jewel. 50 points for every Bearsville gathering you've attended. 100 bonus points for making all six. Another 100 for making all six reunions AND being at Jewelstock. 200 for knowing what the hell "Jewelstock Night 3" was and actually attending. NO points for making Hot Dog Fest. (Attending was its own reward ;-) 100 points for knowing when, where and what brand of underwear Mike Connell prefers. 50 points for knowing Tammy Campbell's "achilles heel". 50 points for understanding the significance of Jewel's Royal Frisbee Guard (and its undisputed surfer boy leader). MINUS 50 points if you participated in the mob lynching of Jewelstock's "Fuzzy the Bear". 250 for possessing Jewelstock guitar picks, the EDA towel or select underwear. 250 for slipping unnoticed into Jewel soundchecks/restricted areas (per occurence). 50 points for every time Jewel skipped your party or informal bar hop. 20 points for every llama sighting. 40 points for knowing why this is important. 25 points if you know the story and brief career of the Black Sheep Bubblettes. 500 points if you WERE one of the Black Sheep Bubblettes. 100 points for bleating "Chimes Bells" aloud at a concert in your best goat boy voice. 500 points for every documented alien encounter. 100 points for every time you've spontaneously combusted in flame at a show or gathering (claims by rock 'n roll drummers and attacks by fellow EDAs do NOT count). 50 points for helping Jewel with forgotten lyrics during a show (this category belongs to Tom O'Brien). 25 points for every Jewel "pee" story you can remember her telling. 100 points for possessing a genuine appreciation of "period teeth" (Ang's words, not mine). 50 points for admitting you could care less about reading "A Night without Armor" (c'mon, its written for and about teenage girl angst -- guys, get a grip!). 1 point for kissing Steve Plotz (add 10 for doing it on the mouth, another 100 if done on Bourbon Street). Deduct ALL points if Steve didn't keep his mouth shut. MINUS 50 points if you are female. 50 points for every embarrassing Jewel story you know. 30 points EACH for every EDA you've met over 30 years of age -- including Igor, Alan, Mike, Larry and myself. Any other suggestions? That said, I haven't seen J since the NashBash taping (I know, BAD JEWEL FAN)... but I might get credit for one or two (or maybe all) of the above items. But what do you mean with rare night, okay i agree her voice , her talents, her beauty on stage! a lot of this things makes me also smile. of course, i am always happy with jewel. she is my hero, no doubt. but the dylan story, the drugbust storie, the story about elminidate is too much. she could tell why she started to write new songs for the new record. she is doing always now the lyric book trick, with people on stage. of course in the beginning of this year i find it special and grateful. now i think too many people are on stage, the special feeling is a little less.. don?t understand me wrong, because i will always be a dedicated fan! See i live in the netherlands, have seen 15 shows in the USA, and 25 shows in EUROPE. Grand total of 40 in my life, which is peanuts in comparisation with some fans that are going to see the shows in america. there will be always more shows in america....so i have always to compete.. but i will scan soon the message that jewel wrote for me personally when i was in america during her accoustic this way west coast tour.. i wish i could be at a tour again, but first a movie and a new book of poetry and perhaps that new cd... bye michiel the dutch jewelfan grinch $$$ 40 shows $$$$ 10000 dollars spent i guess on all jewelitems/concerts or is it even more $$$$LOL$$$$ - -----Oorspronkelijk bericht----- Van: owner-jewel@smoe.org [mailto:owner-jewel@smoe.org]Namens Dave0828@aol.com Verzonden: maandag 18 november 2002 23:23 Aan: michiel_van_gorkum@planet.nl; jewel@smoe.org Onderwerp: Re: [EDA] is jewel screwing up ?? - NO I doubt that Jewel is screwing up her career much. Hey guys Just wanted to say I don't think an April start date for this new film will conflict with her schedule particularly. Most films take somewhere between two and three months to shoot.... so that'd leave her free by July to promote the new record and go on tour. Also, most record companies require that an artist deliver an album 3-5 months before it's released, because they need to sort out a marketing plan etc etc. This Way was finished in August and released in November. So if the new record is finished by March she'll be fine. In fact she will probably be working on both projects at the same time - - but my guess is she'll be able to finish RECORDING by the time she starts the movie, and work on mixing and sequencing while shooting. In fact it sounds to me that she'll have a nice little hole in her schedule between April and June - perfect to do a movie. As far as Wave goes, I doubt that'll get off the ground (as far as filming goes) until late next year. They don't have a director yet, and no other cast members have been announced. My guess is that Jewel's production company is going to have to sort out some kind of co-financing arrangement, because I doubt Jewel will be fronting all the cash for the project herself. All that stuff takes time... so my guess is they'll shoot that AFTER the summer tour, if they manage to get it off the ground. I have to say I'm excited about this new film. Christopher Wilkinson has a great track-record as a writer... and it sounds like an interesting project. I know that Jewel has shied away from playing a "rock star" on pure principle, so it must be a hell of a script for her to be convinced to do it. By the way - I think it's pretty certain it's happening - Production Weekly is an official source for that type of news. I suppose once JeweLink confirms it and there's an article in Reuters it'll seem more official. I certainly hope it's not an untrue rumour. Steve ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Nov 2002 23:15:32 +0000 From: "Amy Emerman" Subject: [EDA] live concert footage, children's book & other stuff I'd love if Atlantic released live footage from Jewel's recent solo tour, or even some with band and some solo. I'd particarly want to see the solo stuff from the NEw Wild West tour since I missed seeing her live this time 'round. Of course, Atlantic probably won't since it probably wouldn't be a great money-making venture. But, it would certainly please the fans... Looking forward to Jewel's book of love poetry, by the way. That should be interesting. Wonder if she'll ever write a children's book. Maybe on the power of faith, or something like that. Speaking of children's books, my boyfriend recently wrote and illustrated an awesome one. It's a modern space age twist on an old tale. Hey, if you know any kids who need a good book for Christmas or whatever, this one really is great. And I ain't just sayin' that...The illustrations are vibrantly bold and graphic and the moral is superlative. It's just a damn sweet story, if I must say so. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0810905663/qid=1037660974/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/102-1177664-9131306?v=glance&s=books&n=507846 Jewel would write an awesome children's book i'm sure if she ever decided to jump on that bandwagon. And, she could illustrate it herself as well, since she is artistically talented visually as well as aurally. So...there ya go.
