It seems that she's throwing it all right back in the face of any backlash she has incurred from her NJ comments on Wed - with giving some even better ones on Friday and Saturday nights. I think it's great. She's essentially saying - It was a joke. And, now I'm going to push it to the point of absurdity until everyone else realizes how ridiculous this is. I'd post the recent comments - but, it appears that not enough people around here can take a joke. America has gotten TOO politically correct - lighten up. After all, she has plenty of songs with far coarser subject matter than this. Please tell me that all of those people offended by something that they have heard out of context second or third hand have at least listened to the lyrics of her songs enough to know that she has addressed far more offensive subject matter. I can't even believe that we're still talking about this. All those who were offended by these things need to take a closer listen to Jewel's lyrics (start with Serve the Ego). You'll probably wind up being offended enough to un-subscribe to this list and not bother us with things so petty. So, go to the concert, listen to recordings of the concerts, then pass judgment. But, until you hear the real quotes from the horse's mouth - check out the rest of the things that she has said in her lyrics and decide if you can even deal with things that are so offensive disturbing your delicate earlobes. But, also consider just how many gay events/benefits she has been a part of. And, I personally know a gay fan who was at the show who laughed straight through it and loved it. Of course, they heard it in the context of which it was said. HEr powerful, country-tinged voice is astonishing, but it was her quirky jokes that got the gword going at the Lowell Memorial uditorium Friday night. During a two-hour set, the glamorous Alaskan shared a story about a dream she had when she was 16 where Bob Dylan was coming on to her. She confessed that she was wearing fake eyelashes ("in case you were wondering if I was born with it") and delivered a quick-witted comment when a man screamed "I love you Jewel!" in the middle of a ballad. "I bet your girlfriend is really embarrassed now, huh?" Touring to support her CD This Way, Jewel, whose last name is Kilcher, trated the close to sold-out crowd with engaging renditions of her latest work and some old favorites. Her recent hit, "Standing Still" was slow-paced but powerful, and "Jesus Loves You" and "Sometimes It Be That Way," were bare-bone beauties. She mined a lot of material from the 2001 release, but it was not a play-by-the-numbers set. The evening took on a free-form intimacy early on when Jewel looked into the crowd and asked: "What do you feel like hearing?" Someone shouted out "Carnivore," a rare bootleg gem, and she plowed head-long into the acid-tinged song about love and loss. Jewel's singing style is hard to pinpoint. She constantly fluctuates between sweet-tones songstress, evident on "Hands," and passionate siren, on "Life Uncommon." Although she has grown up a lot since her 1994 release 'Pieces of You', she can still appear little-girlish and fragile, and the tender "Break Me," proved that point. With such range and talent, you never know what turn her songs will take. But wherever they end up, it's always a pretty place. After all, not many singers can evoke Patsy Cline and Joni Mitchell in one night. She did so on "The New Wild West." Early hits like "You Were Meant for Me," sung at times in a whisper, and "Who Will Save Your Soul" were late set highlights. The enthusiastic crowd hung on every word and cheered her on with shouts and catcalls. Instead of being annoyed, the 28-year-old seemed to bask in the attention. Alternating between two guitars, she strummed confidently despite breaking her collarbone and a rib in April when she fell off a horse. Before recordgin 'This Way', Jewel took a few years off from the music business to regain her enthusiasm. Judging from last night's performance, it seems she's got it back. At the show's end, when fans rushed the stage, she signed autographs and shook hands before breaking into a five-minute, audience-induced yodel. With her petite frame and movie-star looks, hearing that prairie sound pour our of her was other-worldly. Opener Jason Mraz won the room over with a lively set of jassy lounge music. The newly signed San Diego artist, joined by a bongo player and stand-up baass, broke into a surprising melody of Etta James' "At Last," the them from 'The Love Boat' and his own catchy "Sleep All Day." This drew a standing ovation from a few concertgoers, a rarity for an unknown artist playing these parts. Lauren Yahoo! The first one being this Jewel poster: http://www.kinzone.net/catalog/jeweljk/G34:P1800537/!SIDPOrWi8uC1N/ and the second one being a PJ Harvey poster, either one of these (I'd love both, but one will have to do!): http://www.posters.co.uk/AProduct/Search/1/0/PJ_Harvey.html# second one, on stage in skirt, or this one: http://www.posternow.com/h/h3466-P.J.-Harvey.htm So my offer is this: I'm close to broke at this point, and can't afford to buy these on my own over the net. If I could find *any* PJ Harvey posters in the city I live in, I could splerge on the Jewel one, but I can't :) and since letting go of the magazines means letting go of a small collection, completing or starting someone else's collection, and quite a cost in postage because they're quite heavy, my offer is the five magazines and the Jewel dollar bill to one person who can get me both the Jewel poster and find me a PJ Harvey poster (if you can get another one easier, I might be willing to trade for a different PJ poster, or even a different Jewel one if I can't get those) or to be split between two people if the case is that you only want some things, and I can find someone else to supply the other half :) Oh, and if you are still interested, the magazines are in good to excellent shape (with Jewel on the cover of each): September 1999 Reader's Digest December 1999 Glamour December 2000 Self April 2002 Acoustic Guitar November 2001 Vanity Fair Music Issue with the cost of the magazines, the cost of the dollar bill, still crisp (which was actually bought for $6.50 in 1998) and the cost of shipping them, I believe it makes up for the cost of the posters, especially since you get *jewel* and she's priceless ;) and it would really help me out and make me happy, and you know you want to make me happy :) if you aren't interested in those, I have an extra radioshack poster, and a cd burner with over 100 live mp3's of her unreleased music if that so tickles your fancy! as you can see I'm desperate for these, my two favourite artists deserve to decorate my walls :) so anyone who is interested please email me privately :) ~ Sandy ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Nov 2002 17:49:09 +0100 From: "=?iso-8859-1?Q?emilie.bozon@laposte.net?=" Subject: [EDA] =?iso-8859-1?Q?lowell?= Hi everyone Lowell friday night was a great night. I also was disappointed with the setlist, no Does anyone believe in love, no Rosy & Mick, no Violet Eyes, no Til we run out of road, but she played Carnivore amd Passing Time and Foolish Games, I mean I was glad she played Foolish Games, because that's the song I'm trying to learn on my guitar right now, and I was missing a few chords, so I stared at Jewel's fingers during the song and now I can play the entire song correctly ! and it was amazing ath end of the show, after Per la Gloria...people were getting closer, asking Jewel for her bottle of water, her guiatr pics, and she started to sign autographs on stage, she signed a lot, and then she started to sing Chime Bells and she was still signing, the security guard were trying to get the oeple back to their seats but Jewel said "you can leave them here" :-) after the show, we were waiting outside for 30 minutes, Victoria was playing Jewel songs for us, Jewel came out...and she signed everything we wanted, I thought she would never do that in the US !! Vic got her guitar signed :-) I didn't have anything because she already signed my Serve the ego CD on stage, so when she was near me, I just shook her hand and said "thank you", she smiled and said "thank you" :-) Victoria took a lot of pictures during the signing and Chime Bells. We will put them on a website soon. Take Care Emilie PS: about Stacy's game, I have 300 points !! i'm on the edge of being a stalker ! but I guess I'm not because I earnt a lot of points because of my Steve Poltz CDs. and if I had played 3 days ago, i would have had so many points because I just got another autograph and I touched Jewel. lol Accidez au courrier ilectronique de La Poste : www.laposte.net ; 3615 LAPOSTENET (0,13 /mn) ; til : 08 92 68 13 50 (0,34/mn)" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Nov 2002 14:39:23 -0200 From: "Fabio (wnet)" Subject: [EDA] this article has some nice things http://fredericksburg.com/News/FLS/2002/112002/11142002/786555 Fabio ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Nov 2002 14:17:42 -0500 From: "Joe Kunis" Subject: Re: [EDA] Jewel didnt intend to insult Dylan Tanya-why defend a no-talent like eninem? The fact that he gets rich from spouting his > nonsense to the morally confused masses shows how low we have sunk in our > standards. > > > Joe Kunis Honestly, I don't know if we should get into "the eminem debate" on the Jewel list. People either get him or they don't. Unless you have heard his entire albums, and not just a few songs, then you really should not say anything. He has some violent songs but they are no more violent than anything you would read in a horror novel or see in a horror film. In fact, they are much much less violent. What Eminem does is channel his rage into his words and his music. It's better to get your anger out on paper than in other ways. He has never touched his mother or his wife. And while he does have some violent songs, he does make it clear in other songs that no one should do these things. He is angry, but he makes a statement and he is very critical of society. Some of his songs are for shock value. But that is not why he sells records. He is an amazing lyricist and rapper. If you don't like rap music or understand the skill involved in it, then you won't be impressed by him. If you can't relate to him, then don't. People like him for his music and for his honesty. He says what most people are afraid to. He pushes the limits and he makes us think about things we normally wouldn't. I don't think his music is appropriate for younger children and I am amazed at how many of them love him. But his music was not made for children. The fact that he is rich and has gotten rich off of his music has nothing to do with our standards. Maybe it is the "morally confused" that you should be talking more about. Maybe it is society you should be addressing. It seems that Eminem is one of the few popular artists out there that actually does address society. It amazes me how people still get upset over his vulgar lyrics. Maybe speaking about violence is better than keeping our mouths shut and censoring it. Eminem does not promote violence or misogyny or homophobia. He inspires people to think. Many people have respect for him including Stephen King and Randy Newman. Many journalists and critics praise him. Other rappers and artists call him a genius. Anyway, I have heard opinions from so many people that do not like him. And I continue to think highly of him. Thanks for your opinion! - -Tanya ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V7 #499 ***************************
